The Grand Slam in Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the achievement of winning all four major IBJJF tournaments in a calendar year. The four Grand Slam tournaments are the World IBJJF Championship, the European IBJJF Championship, Pan IBJJF Championship and the CBJJ Brazilian National Championship. Winning all four tournaments within a single year is widely considered the most prestigious accomplishment in Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition. [1]

History

In the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the first Brazilian National Championship ("Brasileiro") started in 1994, [2] the IBJJF World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship ("Worlds") was held in 1996, [3] [4] the Pan American Championship ("Pans") first took place in 1996 [5] while the European Open Championship ("Euros") was inaugurated in 2004. [6]

Euros, Pans, Brasileiros and Worlds are the four major and most renowned championships in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, [7] they are part of a series of events known as the IBJJF Grand Slam. [8] [9] [10]

The European Open is the first gi grand slam tournament of the year, the last edition took place in Paris, [11] followed by Pans in California, [12] the Brazilian Nationals in São Paulo and the World Championship in California. Being the reigning champion of all four competitions in a single year is regarded as the most prestigious accomplishment in competition (in either gi or no gi). [13]

The Campeonato Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu, commonly known as Brasileiro, is an annual Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament held in Brazil by the IBJJF. Tayane Porfírio de Araújo is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) 4x World Championship black belt champion. In 2017 Porfirio realized the IBJJF Grand Slam after winning her weight category and the absolute category at all 4 major Gi Championships: World Championship, European Open Championship, Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship and Brazilian Nationals Championship.

Ffion Davies is a Welsh submission grappler, mixed martial artist and a world-champion Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competitor. She is a multiple winner of the IBJJF World Championship, including the no-gi championship in 2023 in both the 61 kg and absolute divisions.

Devhonte Johnson, commonly known as "Bones", is an American grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt competitor and coach. A multiple time IBJJF World, Pan American and European champion in lower belt divisions; Johnson is a black belt IBJJF World No-Gi, Pan American No-Gi and European Open No-Gi Champion.

Tainan Dalpra Costa is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt competitor. A winner of every major tournaments as a colored belt, Dalpra is a two-time World, Pan American, and European champion. Dalpra is ranked No. 1 in the middleweight 2022-2023 IBJJF Gi Ranking.

Micael Ferreira Galvão, commonly known as Mica Galvão, is a submission grappler, Luta Livre and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt competitor from the Brazilian state of Amazonas. A highly decorated athlete competing since childhood, Galvão was promoted to black belt in 2021, at the age of 17, less than three years after reaching blue belt. In 2022 Galvão won the 2022 IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship before testing positive for a banned substance, was stripped of said title and received a one-year suspension ban.

Penny Thomas is a South African submission grappler and 3rd degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt practitioner and coach. After opening South Africa's first jiu-jitsu academy in her garage, Thomas won two BJJ world champion titles. Subsequently, she relocated to the United States, where she trained under the guidance of Luis Heredia and later Leticia Ribeiro.

Brianna Ste-Marie is a Canadian submission grappler, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt athlete. Elisabeth Clay Moreira is an American submission grappler, Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner and competitor. Clay won multiple World and Pan championships titles throughout her colored belts as well as the ADCC West Coat Trials when just a 16-year-old blue belt. She is a black belt 3X World No-Gi champion, a 4X Pan No-Gi champion as well as a World, European Open and Brazilian Nationals medallist. As of March 2024, Clay was listed as FloGrappling's #2 female in the world for no-gi pound-for-pound rankings.

Roberto Jimenez is an American-born Ecuadorian grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt competitor.

Talita Alencar is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioner. A World jiu-jitsu Champion in colored belts, she is a three-time IBJJF World No-Gi Champion, and two-time European No-Gi Champion and a World IBJJF and Pan American jiu-jitsu black belt Champion.

The SJJIF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship commonly known as SJJIF Worlds is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament held once every year by the Sport Jiu Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF), one of jiu-jitsu's international governing bodies with the mission to make Jiu-Jitsu an Olympic sport. The last edition of the championship took place in Long Beach, California in July 2022.

Maria Malyjasiak is a Polish Judoka, submission grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt competitor.

Jhenifer Aquino a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt practitioner. A World and two-time IBJJF Pan Champion in colored belts, Aquino is a black belt World No-Gi and Pan No-Gi Champion and a 2023 IBJJF World Championship and 2023 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship medallist. Aquino is ranked No. 5 in the rooster weight 2022–2023 IBJJF Gi Ranking.
