The Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF) is a non-profit organisation, one of the international governing bodies for the sport of Brazilian jiu-jitsu with the goal of making it an Olympic sport. The SJJIF hosts several tournaments, its most renowned being the SJJIF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

History

In 1967, a federation known as the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Guanabara was established by Hélio Gracie, Alvaro Barreto and Oswaldo Fadda under the supervision of the National Sports Council, Brazil sports governing body, with the aim of developing a competitive sport version of jiu-jitsu, at the time a self-defence and street fighting art. [1] In June 1973, jiu-jitsu was officially recognised as a sport, in December, the first championship was organised in Rio de Janeiro, marking the beginning of sport Jiu-Jitsu. [1] In 2005 the North American Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Federation (NAJJF) was created. [2]

In June 2011 the Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF), was established as a non-profit organisation with the aim of meeting the International Olympic Committee requirements and promoting jiu-jitsu as a sport around the world. [3] The SJJIF is considered the world governing body for the sport of Sport Jiu Jitsu. [4] Speaking to the New York Times, João Silva, president of the SJJIF stated that the federation was seeking to unify the sport to gain Olympic recognition. [5]

SJJIF tournaments

SJJIF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship

In December 2013, in conjunction with the NABJJF, the SJJIF hosted its first international event, the World SJJIF Jiu-Jitsu Championships, at the same location as the World IBJJF Championship, [6] the Walter Pyramid at CSU in Long Beach, California, USA. [7] Under SJJIF competition rules, matches are disputed without advantages points or referee decisions, [8] black belt João Silva is president of the SJJIF and organiser of the event. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners of the main event. [9]

Adapted Jiu-Jitsu World Championships

In 2017 the SJJIF started the Adapted Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, a tournament for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners with a form of disability and/or impairment with the goal of reaching the Paralympics, Deaflympics and special games recognized by the Olympic Committee. [10] Adapted Jiu-Jitsu is divided into 3 categories: Deaf Jiu-Jitsu, Para Jiu-Jitsu, and Special Jiu-Jitsu for athletes with intellectual and cognitive disabilities and impairments. [11]

As a governing body the organization establishes the rules and general guidelines of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practice and competition, as well as producing rankings of schools and athletes, and promoting training of referees and staff.

The World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament held annually by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. It is widely considered the most important and prestigious jiu-jitsu tournament of the year.

David Vieira is a 4th Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a BJJ competitor, instructor, a professional mixed martial artist (MMA) fighter and the current 2022 and 2023 World Master IBJJF Champion ( IBJJF).

Wellington Leal Dias Santos, known as Megaton Dias, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioner, and 7th degree coral belt of the Gracie Humaitá jiu-jitsu association under Royler Gracie. Wellington originally trained under Rogerio Camoes and later at the Gracie Humaitá jiu-jitsu school in Rio de Janeiro. Wellington received his black belt at the age of 18. Wellington is currently a coral belt under Royler Gracie.

Marcello Salazar M. Bergo is a Brazilian former mixed martial artist. He is a member of the Brazilian Top Team, and is currently a full-time instructor at Brazilian Top Team-Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Campeonato Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu, commonly known as Brasileiro, is an annual Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament held in Brazil by the IBJJF. Brasileiro has been held annually since 1996, except for the year 2020 when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Through 2012 the event was held at the Ginásio do Tijuca Tênis Clube in Rio de Janeiro; since 2013 it has been held at the Ginásio Poliesportivo José Corrêa in Barueri, São Paulo.

Hannette Staack is a Brazilian submission grappler and 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt practitioner and coach. A three-time ADCC champion and five-time IBJJF World Champion, Staack is a member of the IBJJF Hall of Fame and is regarded as one of the most accomplished female grapplers in the history of the sport.

Jackson Sousa dos Santos is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) and grappling competitor and instructor. A winner of several major championships in coloured belts, such as IBJJF World Championship, IBJJF European Championship and CBJJ Brazilian Nationals; Sousa is a black belt World No-Gi champion, a 2 x European champion and a 3 x Pan No-Gi champion.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Leandro Lo</span> Brazilian jiu-jitsu athlete (1989–2022)

Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo, better known as Leandro Lo, was a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt competitor. A record holder with eight IBJJF world championship titles in five different weight classes, as well as multiple wins at every major international tournament, Lo is considered one of the most accomplished jiu-jitsu competitors of all time.

Leonardo Dalla is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt competitor and instructor. He was medalist in several major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions, such as the World Championship, Pan American Championship gi and no-gi, and Brazilian National Championship.

Augusto Mendes is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner. He is currently signed to the Absolute Championship Berkut. He was the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Black Belt World 70 kg champion (2013), International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation World Nogi 73.5 kg champion in 2012 and 2015 and UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro Champion in 2011 and 2013.

Brazilian Nationals Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship is a no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournament hosted annually by the CBJJ since 2009 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lucas Dos Santos Pinheiro, known as, Lucas Pinheiro is a black belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete who competes professionally for the Atos Jiu Jitsu Team in the United States. Pinheiro is a 2023 World Jiu-Jitsu Champion.

Laurence Cousin Fouillat is a French submission grappler and third degree black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor and instructor. Considered a pioneer in the sport, Cousin is regarded as the first European female to receive a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In 2005 she won the CBJJO World Jiu-Jitsu Cup and medalled at the IBJJF World Championship taking place in Rio de Janeiro. In 2007 Cousin became the first woman from outside Brazil to become IBJJF World jiu-jitsu champion.

Nathalie "Tata" Ribeiro is a submission grappler and black belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor and instructor. A multiple time world champion in colored belt, Ribeiro is a three-time World Championship medallist, the 2019 World No-Gi Champion, the 2022 European Champion, the 2022 Pan-American champion and the 2021 Pan-American champion in both Gi and No-Gi.

Chloé McNally is an American competitor of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. A No-Gi World Champion, IBJJF Pan American Champion and Brazilian National Champion in colored belts, McNally is a two-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championship and Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship black belt medallist.

The SJJIF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship commonly known as SJJIF Worlds is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament held once every year by the Sport Jiu Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF), one of jiu-jitsu's international governing bodies with the mission to make Jiu-Jitsu an Olympic sport. The last edition of the championship took place in Long Beach, California in July 2022.
