Almaty, formerly Alma-Ata, is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population exceeding two million residents within its metropolitan area. Located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains in southern Kazakhstan, near the border with Kyrgyzstan, Almaty stands as a pivotal center of culture, commerce, finance and innovation. The city is nestled at an elevation of 700–900 metres, with the Big Almaty and Small Almaty rivers running through it, originating from the surrounding mountains and flowing into the plains. Almaty is the second-largest city in Central Asia and the third-largest in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
Kazakhstan is divided into 17 regions. The regions are further subdivided into districts. Three cities, Almaty, Shymkent, and the capital city Astana, do not belong to their surrounding regions.
The Kazakhstan men's national ice hockey team is controlled by Kazakhstan Ice Hockey Federation. Kazakhstan is ranked 16th in the world as of 2022. They have competed at the Winter Olympics twice, in 1998 and 2006. The national team joined the IIHF in 1992 and first played internationally at the 1993 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships. The team has frequently played at the elite division of the World Championship, often moving between there and the Division I level.
The 2011 Asian Winter Games, also known as Astana-Almaty 2011, was a continental winter multi-sport event held from January 30 to February 6, 2011 in Astana and Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was the first time that Kazakhstan hosted such a large event since independence from the Soviet Union. The documents for the hosting city were signed in Kuwait on March 4, 2006.
The 2003 IIHF World U20 Championship, commonly referred as the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships, was the 27th edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship. The tournament was held in Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, from December 26, 2002, to January 5, 2003. Russia won the gold medal for the second consecutive year with a 3–2 victory over Canada in the championship game, while Finland won the bronze medal with a 3–2 victory over the United States.
Almaty Region, formerly known as the Alma-Ata Region until 1993, is a region in Kazakhstan, located in the southeastern part of the country. Its capital, from 1997 to 2022 was the city of Taldyqorğan. But with the new creation of Jetysu Region in 2022, Taldyqorğan was chosen to be its capital, and the capital of Almaty Region was moved to the city of Qonaev.
Greece and Kazakhstan established diplomatic relations on 1 October 1992. Greece opened an embassy in Almaty in February 1997. Kazakhstan opened an embassy in Athens in 2005. Kazakhstan has had an honorary consulate in Athens since 1998.
The French men's national under 20 ice hockey team is the national under-20 ice hockey team in France. The team represents France at the International Ice Hockey Federation's IIHF World U20 Championship's World Junior Hockey Championship Division I.
Andrei Vladimirovich Spiridonov is a Kazakhstani professional ice hockey player. He is currently playing with the HK Almaty of the Kazakhstan Hockey Championship.
The European Women's Hockey League, abbreviated EWHL, is an international ice hockey league. Created as the Elite Women's Hockey League in 2004 by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the EWHL comprises clubs from several countries in Central Europe and one team from Kazakhstan, and is played in parallel to national championships.

Milenyum Paten Spor Kulübü is a Turkish women's ice hockey team in Ankara, Turkey playing in the Turkish Ice Hockey Women's League. Founded in 2002 for figure skating only, the club is active in ice hockey since 2007. In March 2014 the team won the league for the fifth time, becoming the most successful hockey team in the country. The club's colors are purple and silver.
Aisulu Almaty are a professional ice hockey team in the European Women's Hockey League (EWHL). They play in Almaty, Kazakhstan, at the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace. The team participated in every holding of the IIHF European Women Champions Cup, from 2004 until its scheduled stoppage in 2015, winning bronze at the 2008 tournament. They have competed in the EWHL since the 2015–16 season and placed third in the league in 2016 and 2020.

Almaty Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Almaty, Kazakhstan which was opened on 18 September 2016 and seats 12,000 spectators for ice hockey. Apart from hosting ice hockey matches, the arena is venue for boxing, figure skating, basketball, concerts, and other events. It is one of the venues to host the 2017 Winter Universiade. The arena is located in the north of punched Ryskulov Avenue, to the west from Momyshuly street in the Alatau District.
The Iran national ice hockey team is the national men's ice hockey team of Iran. The team was founded in June 2016, is controlled by the Islamic Republic of Iran Skating Federation, and on 26 September 2019, became an associate member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Iran made its debut in the IIHF World Championship in 2022. As of 2022, Iran is ranked 56th in the IIHF World Ranking.
Olga Petrovna Konysheva is a Kazakhstani ice hockey player and member of the Kazakh national ice hockey team, currently playing in the European Women's Hockey League (EWHL) with Aisulu Almaty. A twenty-two season competitor with the Kazakh national team, she represented Kazakhstan in the women's ice hockey tournament at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and at fifteen IIHF Women's World Championships, including at the Top Division tournaments in 2001, 2005, 2009, and 2011. She is a three-time Asian Winter Games medalist, having won gold medals at the women's ice hockey tournaments in 2003 and 2011, and a bronze medal in 2017.

The 2028 IIHF World Championship will be hosted in France from 12 to 28 May 2028, as they were the only bid to host this IIHF World Championship.
The 2025 IIHF Asia Championship was an international men's ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It was the first edition of this event. The tournament was played at Halyk Arena in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from 6 to 9 November 2024. Kazakhstan won the tournament after winning the group.
