The town is the birthplace of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the national leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), as well as philosopher Professor John Olubi Sodipo, the pioneer vice-chancellor of Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University).
