The Illinois Envelope Co. Building is a former industrial structure located at 400 Bryant Street (alternatively, 311 East Alcott Street) in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. [1] In 2018, the building became the home of the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department. [2]

History

The Illinois Envelope Company was established in 1902 in Centralia, Illinois. In 1904, the company moved to Kalamazoo at the request of the Bryant Paper Company, its major creditor, which was also located in Kalamazoo at the time. The company built this factory at the time, with additions constructed in 1941. [3] The Illinois Envelope Company remained in the building until 1998, when the company was purchased by Mail-Well. The plant was closed five months later. [4] The building remained vacant until 2016, when the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners agreed to renovate and lease the building for a new health and human services facility. [5] The department moved into the building in 2018. [2]

Description

The Illinois Envelope Co. Building is a large, rectangular, three-story building, built in a mill-type frame construction. It is built of red-tan brick, and has a flat roof pierced by several saw-tooth skylights. The building was constructed to house the factory. warehouse. and offices of the company. The main entrance is through an archway located in the corner of the building. The windows are narrow, double-hung, four-over-four units with segmental-arch heads, windows. Brick additions of one and two stories are connected at the building's northeast corner. [3]

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is a former factory located within the Milwaukee Junction area of Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. Built in 1904, it was the second center of automobile production for the Ford Motor Company, after the Ford Mack Avenue Plant. At the Piquette Avenue Plant, the company created and first produced the Ford Model T, the car credited with initiating the mass use of automobiles in the United States. Prior to the Model T, several other car models were assembled at the factory. Early experiments using a moving assembly line to make cars were also conducted there. It was also the first factory where more than 100 cars were assembled in one day. While it was headquartered at the Piquette Avenue Plant, Ford Motor Company became the biggest U.S.-based automaker, and it would remain so until the mid-1920s. 1001 Woodward

1001 Woodward is an office building in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It replaced the Majestic Building, a 14-story high rise on the same site. The building is located just south of the neighboring David Stott Building, at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Michigan Avenue overlooking Campus Martius Park. Constructed from 1963 to 1965, the 25-story building is designed in the International Style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

The H.F. Barrows Manufacturing Company Building, now the North Attleborough Police Station, is a historic industrial building at 102 South Washington Street in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. The elegant brick building was built in 1905-06, and was home for many years to one of the town's most successful jewelry businesses. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Today the building serves as the headquarters for the North Attleborough Police Department.

The Baystate Corset Block is a historic commercial block at 395-405 Dwight St. and 99 Taylor Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. Built in 1874 and twice enlarged, it was from 1888 to 1920 home of the Baystate Corset Company, one of the nation's largest manufacturers of corsets. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Vesta Battery Corporation (1897–1964), known until 1929 as the Vesta Accumulator Company, was an American manufacturer of automobile electrical gear. Based in Chicago, Illinois, the company was founded by a former garment worker in 1897. Originally intending to sell parts for electric bicycles, the company quickly diversified to manufacture electrical goods for the burgeoning automobile industry. At its peak, the company had branches in ten American cities. Vesta continued operations until it was purchased by Associated Battery Makers in 1964. Its 1913 factory in Chicago is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
