Illinois Route 111 (IL 111) is an 82.18-mile-long (132.26 km) north–south state highway in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. It travels from Short Street (near Lake Drive and ¹⁄₄ mile (0.40 km) northwest of Interstate 255) in Centreville to IL 104 in Waverly.

Illinois is a state in the Midwestern and Great Lakes region of the United States. It has the fifth largest gross domestic product (GDP), the sixth largest population, and the 25th largest land area of all U.S. states. Illinois is often noted as a microcosm of the entire United States. With Chicago in northeastern Illinois, small industrial cities and immense agricultural productivity in the north and center of the state, and natural resources such as coal, timber, and petroleum in the south, Illinois has a diverse economic base, and is a major transportation hub. Chicagoland, Chicago's metropolitan area, encompasses over 65% of the state's population. The Port of Chicago connects the state to international ports via two main routes: from the Great Lakes, via the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, via the Illinois Waterway to the Illinois River. The Mississippi River, the Ohio River, and the Wabash River form parts of the boundaries of Illinois. For decades, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has been ranked as one of the world's busiest airports. Illinois has long had a reputation as a bellwether both in social and cultural terms and, through the 1980s, in politics.

Centreville is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,309 in 2010, down from 5,951 at the 2000 census.

Illinois Route 104 is a state highway in central and western Illinois. It extends from Illinois Route 29 near Taylorville, west over the Illinois River at Meredosia to its western terminus in downtown Quincy. This is a distance of 125.91 miles (202.63 km).

Route description

IL 111 has concurrencies with IL 3 in Alton, U.S. Route 67 (US 67) in Godfrey, and IL 267 from Godfrey to Medora.

A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex, triplex, multiplex, dual routing or triple routing.

Illinois Route 3 (IL 3) is a major north–south arterial state highway in southwestern Illinois. It has its southern terminus at Cairo Junction at the intersection of Interstate 57 (I-57) and U.S. Route 51 (US 51), and its northern terminus in Grafton at IL 100. This is a distance of 187.44 miles (301.66 km).

Alton is a city on the Mississippi River in Madison County, Illinois, United States, about 15 miles (24 km) north of St. Louis, Missouri. The population was 27,865 at the 2010 census. It is a part of the Metro-East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. It is famous for its limestone bluffs along the river north of the city, for its role preceding and during the American Civil War, and as the home town of jazz musician Miles Davis and Robert Wadlow, the tallest known person in history. It was the site of the last Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debate in October 1858. The former state penitentiary in Alton was used during the Civil War to hold up to 12,000 Confederate prisoners of war.

History

In August 1960, a new alignment in Alton on what is now the Homer M. Adams Parkway opened to traffic from IL 100 to IL 140.^[3] A second new alignment, Bellwood Road Extension in Bethalto, opened a few years later that would link IL 111 up with Vaughn and Central in Wood River. The original alignment of IL 111 in Alton had it cut up Sixth Street in Wood River, Old Alton–Edwardsville Road (with a concurrency with then-IL 159), and up Broadway in Alton until its concurrency with US 67 using Belle Street.

Illinois Route 100 is a 159-mile (256 km) highway in the southwest Illinois. It generally parallels the Illinois River. Starting in downtown Alton, it trends northward to Buckheart Township near Canton. It makes up much of the Illinois River Road, a U.S. National Scenic Byway. Illinois 100 is 159.09 miles (256.03 km) long.

Illinois Route 140 is an east–west highway with its western terminus at Illinois Route 143 in Alton and its eastern terminus at U.S. Route 40 near Mulberry Grove. It also overlaps Illinois Route 111 in Alton and Illinois Route 127 in Greenville. This is a distance of 52.05 miles (83.77 km).

Bethalto is a village located in Madison County, Illinois, United States. Bethalto, like the rest of Madison County, is part of the Illinois Metro East portion of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The population of Bethalto was 9,521 at the 2010 census.

SBI Route 111 originally traveled from Waverly to Alton on modern-day IL 111. In 1942, it was extended south to Fairmont City. In 1953, it was extended further south to near East Saint Louis, which became Centreville. In 2001, when US 67 was moved west through Jerseyville, IL 267 took its place north of Medora. Some time after, IL 267 was applied south along with IL 111 on a concurrency.

Fairmont City is a village in St. Clair and Madison counties, Illinois, United States. The population is currently 2,349 at the 2010 census. In the 1990s Fairmont City's Hispanic population doubled, and as of 2010, over 71% of the population is of Hispanic descent. The Fairmont City Library was International Grand Prize First Place for the Libraryaware for Library-community interaction in 2017 beating out the Kansas City Public Library and Catawba County Library in North Carolina.

Jerseyville is a city in Jersey County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 U.S. census, the city had a total population of 8,465. It is the county seat of Jersey County, and is the largest city in the county.

Illinois Route 267 is a north–south highway in the U.S. state of Illinois. It runs from U.S. Route 67 and Illinois Route 111 in Godfrey north to Illinois Route 104 and Business Interstate 72 in Jacksonville. This is a distance of 59 miles (95 km). However, the state of Illinois' 2006 data shows the length of Illinois 267 as 39.46 miles (63.50 km), which is the distance from the Illinois 111/267 wye north to BL 72 at Illinois 104.

IL 53 runs from Interstate 55 (I-55) west of historic U.S. Route 66 (US 66) in Gardner to IL 83 in Long Grove, a distance of 82.02 miles (132.00 km). It mainly cuts through the western suburbs of Chicago, passes through Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Crest Hill and Joliet, merging into I-55 at Gardner.

Maryland Route 18 (MD 18) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The state highway runs 20.37 miles (32.78 km) from the beginning of state maintenance at Love Point east to MD 213 in Centreville. MD 18 is the main east–west local highway on Kent Island and east to Centreville, serving the centers of Stevensville, Chester, Kent Narrows, Grasonville, and Queenstown that are bypassed by U.S. Route 50 (US 50) and US 301. What is signed as MD 18 is actually a set of four suffixed highways: MD 18A, MD 18B, MD 18S, and MD 18C. There are also several unsigned segments of MD 18 scattered along the length of the signed portions.

Maryland Route 213 is a 68.25-mile (109.84 km) state highway located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the United States. The route runs from MD 662 in Wye Mills, Queen Anne's County north to the Pennsylvania border in Cecil County, where it continues into that state as Pennsylvania Route 841. The route, which is a two-lane undivided highway its entire length, passes through mostly rural areas as well as the communities of Centreville, Chestertown, Galena, Cecilton, Chesapeake City, and Elkton. MD 213 intersects many routes including U.S. Route 50 near Wye Mills, US 301 near Centreville, and US 40 in Elkton. It crosses over the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in Chesapeake City on the Chesapeake City Bridge. MD 213 is designated by the state as the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway between the southern terminus and Chesapeake City with the portion north of MD 18 in Centreville a National Scenic Byway. In addition, the route is also considered part of the Atlantic to Appalachians Scenic Byway between Chesapeake City and MD 273 in Fair Hill.

Illinois Route 126 (IL 126) is a 17.25-mile-long (27.76 km) east–west state highway in the northern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. It travels from IL 47 in Yorkville to Interstate 55 (I-55) between Plainfield and Bolingbrook.

Illinois Route 255 (IL 255), also referred to as the Alton Bypass, is a northwesterly extension of Interstate 255 (I-255) in southwestern Illinois in the St. Louis metropolitan area. IL 255 starts at I-270 in Pontoon Beach and ends at U.S. Route 67 (US 67) in Godfrey, at a total length of approximately 23.3 miles (37.5 km). It was constructed in four segments opening from 1998 to 2012 at a total cost of $165.2 million.

Illinois Route 143 is an east–west state highway in southwestern Illinois. Its western terminus is at U.S. Route 67 in Alton. Its eastern terminus at Illinois Route 127 at a rural intersection west of Tamalco. This is a distance of 47.96 miles (77.18 km).

Illinois Route 157 (IL 157) is a 35.50-mile-long (57.13 km) north–south state highway in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. The southern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with IL 3 in Cahokia. The northern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with IL 140 in Hamel.

Illinois Route 336 is a four-lane freeway/expressway combination that serves western Illinois. It is also used by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) as a part of Federal-Aid Primary Highway 315 (FAP315) to refer to a future project connecting the cities of Quincy and Peoria via underserved Macomb.

Illinois Route 75 is an east–west state road in north-central Illinois. It runs from downtown Freeport at Illinois Route 26 to WIS 67 at the Wisconsin state line southeast of Beloit, Wisconsin. This is a distance of 41.64 miles (67.01 km).

In the U.S. state of Illinois, U.S. Route 67 is a north–south highway through the western portions of the state. It runs from the Clark Bridge in Alton north to the Rock Island Centennial Bridge in Rock Island. It is the most direct route between St. Louis and the Quad Cities. This is a distance of 213.99 miles (344.38 km).

Pennsylvania Route 407 is a 12.5-mile-long (20.1 km) state highway located in Lackawanna and Susquehanna Counties in Pennsylvania. The southern terminus is at U.S. Route 6 /US 11 in South Abington Township, Pennsylvania near Clarks Summit near the northern terminus of Interstate 476 (I-476), also known as the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension. The northern terminus is at PA 374 near Glenwood. PA 407 is a two-lane road that serves Clarks Green and Waverly in northern Lackawanna County. This route was part of the Philadelphia and Great Bend Turnpike, a turnpike that was built in 1826. PA 407 was designated in 1928 between US 6/US 11 in Clarks Summit and PA 107 in Fleetville. Numerous special routes of U.S. Route 67, all business routes, exist. One other route, formerly an alternate route in western Illinois, has since been downgraded to state Route 267.

U.S. Route 67 is the portion of a north-south highway in Missouri that starts at the Arkansas state line south of Neelyville and ends at the Illinois state line northeast of West Alton.
