Ilorin International Airport( IATA : ILR, ICAO : DNIL) is an airport serving Ilorin, a city in Kwara State of Nigeria. Ilorin International Airport is owned and operated by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) [3] and is located about 1.8 kilometers from downtown Ilorin. The airport has one runway, which is 3,100M X 60M, with an approach of 121.2MHz

History

Ilorin International Airport serves as a secondary airport to Lagos Airport and is situated approximately an hour's drive from Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. Recently, the terminal building of Ilorin International Airport has gone through renovations to accommodate up to 500 passengers at once. The commissioning of the airport was done by President Olusegun Obasanjo, who also laid the foundation of the airport's cargo shed projected to be completed in March 2007. The airport was initially commissioned on February 16, 1978, and is located in the Fili area of Ilorin, around 9km southwest of Ilorin town. [4] [5] but it was upgraded to international status in 2012. Ilorin International Airport is the main airport serving Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, Nigeria.

These improvements are expected to make the airport more efficient and able to handle more passengers, this is an increase of over 20% from the previous year.

Accidents and incidents

In May 2019, a Diamond DA42 Twin Star light aircraft, registration number 5N-BNH, belly landed on the runway at Ilorin. The two occupants were unharmed. [7] [8]

Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145(SO1145/OSL1145) was a scheduled Nigerian domestic passenger flight from Nigeria's capital of Abuja (ABV) to Port Harcourt (PHC). At about 14:08 local time on 10 December 2005, Flight 1145 from Abuja crash-landed at Port Harcourt International Airport. The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 with 110 people on board, slammed into the ground and burst into flames. Immediately after the crash, seven survivors were recovered and taken to hospitals, but only two people survived.

On 3 June 2012, the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft serving the route suffered a dual-engine failure during its approach to Lagos. It failed to reach its intended destination and crashed onto buildings, killing all 153 people on board and six on the ground. With 159 deaths, it remains the deadliest commercial airliner crash in Nigerian history since the Kano air disaster in 1973.

International Aviation College, Ilorin is an aviation training school in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The college was established in 2011 by the Kwara State Government through a public private partnership with an aviation consult. The college is located along Airport road, Ilorin and is very close to the Ilorin international airport. The college has trained over 110 pilots since its establishment. The college appoints AVM Abdul Yekini Bello (rtd) as new rector on 1 March 2022.
