Iluta Gaile (born 10 December 1968) [1] is a Latvian businesswoman, politician and former luger, who competed at four Winter Olympic Games. She is a former deputy for Riga City Council.
Gaile was born in Cēsis, Latvia SSR (now Latvia), and grew up in Stalbe. [2] As of 2017, Gaile lived in Sigulda. [2] As a teenager, Gaile trained on the Cēsis track. [2]
Gaile competed in the luge event at four Winter Olympic Games. She finished 10th in 1992, 17th in 1994, 14th in 1998, and 10th in 2002. [1] [3] [4]
In 1988 and 1989, she came third in the USSR national championships, and in 1990, she came second in the event. [1] In 1988, she won the Latvia SSR national championships, and in 1994, 1998, and 2000, she won the Latvian national championships. [1] She was part of the Latvian team that won the 1991 Luge World Cup event in Germany. [2] Her best individual result at the FIL World Luge Championships was 8th in 2001. [5]
After retiring from luge, Gaile undertook a master's degree in entrepreneurship. [2] She later set up a recruitment company, IG Konsultācijas. [2] [5] In 2005, she stood for the People's Party as a deputy for Riga City Council. She was not initially selected, but was given the seat after Jānis Freimanis died in 2006. [2]

Māris Gailis is a Latvian businessman and former politician. He is the former Prime Minister of Latvia, an office he held from September 1994 to December 1995. In the government of the Prime Minister Valdis Birkavs, Gailis became a Minister of State Reform; in the government of the Prime Minister Andris Šķēle, he was the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. As a member of the right-wing liberal political party Latvian Way, he was elected in the 5th Saeima and 6th Saeima. He led a round-the-globe expedition on the yacht Milda from 2001 to 2003.
Mārtiņš Rubenis is a retired Latvian luger who competed between 1998 and 2014. He won the bronze medal at the men's singles event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, becoming the first Latvian to win a medal at the Winter Olympics and the only one fr He won his second bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in the Team Relay event. In total he competed in five Olympics.
Gerda Weissensteiner OMRI is an Italian luger and bobsleigh pilot who competed from the late 1980s to 2006. Competing in six Winter Olympics, she won the gold medal in the women's singles luge event at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, and together with Jennifer Isacco she won the bronze in Turin in the two-woman bobsleigh at the 2006 Winter Olympics. She was the first Italian sportsperson to win Olympic medals in two disciplines.
Ivans Klementjevs is a Soviet-born Latvian politician and former sprint canoeist who competed from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. He won three Olympic medals in C-1 1000 m at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. The highlight was the gold medal in 1988, which he won as a competitor for the USSR. He trained at Trudovye Rezervy and later at the Armed Forces sports society in Riga when Latvia was part of the Soviet Union.
Vera Zozulya is a Soviet luger who competed during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, she won the gold medal in the women's singles event at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.
Ingrīda Amantova is a Latvian-born Soviet luger who competed during the early 1980s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the women's singles event at Lake Placid, New York in 1980 and finished fourth in the same event at the following Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. This was the only instances Soviet or Latvian athletes won Olympic medals in women's luge.
Aigars Kriķis was a Latvian Soviet luger who competed during the late 1970s. He won the gold medal at the men's doubles event at the 1978 FIL World Luge Championships in Imst, Austria.
Anna Orlova is a retired Latvian luger who competed at six Winter Olympics between 1992 and 2010. She won the silver medal in the mixed team event at the 2003 FIL World Luge Championships in Sigulda, Latvia and finished fourth in the women's singles event at those same championships.
Maija Tīruma is a former Latvian luger who competed from 2000 to 2013. She won two bronze medals in the mixed team relay event at the FIL World Luge Championships. Tīruma also won a gold medal in the mixed team relay event at the 2008 FIL European Luge Championships in Cesana, Italy and finished seventh in the women's singles event at those same championships. Competing in three Winter Olympics, she earned her best finish of ninth in the women's singles event at Vancouver in 2010.
Kaspars Dumpis is a Latvian former luger who has competed since 2002. He finished 17th in the men's singles event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
Inārs Kivlenieks is a Latvian luger who has competed since 2005. His best Luge World Cup season finish was 20th in men's doubles in 2006–07.
