In Thee Rejoiceth also known as Epi Si Harri is a tempera and gold leaf painting by Georgios Klontzas. The painting is a tribute to the Virgin Mary. Klontzas was active on the island of Crete during the second half of the 16th century. He was a member of the Cretan School. He was one of the most prolific Greek painters of the 16th century. Most of his works were copied by other artists. The In Thee Rejoiceth painting was copied by countless Greek and Italian painters. Theodore Poulakis created a version in the 17 century that is very similar to Klontzas's In Thee Rejoiceth. Franghias Kavertzas also painted a similar theme. He called his painting In You Rejoices. Leos Moskos also created his version of the popular painting. The Klontzas painting is currently at the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies Museum in Venice. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Hymn

Klontzas was inspired by the hymn that was composed by the Syrian monk John of Damascus. It was used in the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great during the Liturgy of the Faithful. The hymn is as follows:

Ἐπὶ σοὶ χαίρει, Κεχαριτωμένη, πᾶσα ἡ
κτίσις, Ἀγγέλων τὸ σύστημα, καὶ ἀνθρώπων τὸ
γένος, ἡγιασμένε ναέ, καὶ Παράδεισε λογικέ,
παρθενικὸν καύχημα· ἐξ ἧς Θεὸς ἐσαρκώθη,
καὶ παιδίον γέγονεν, ὁ πρὸ αἰώνων ὑπάρχων
Θεὸς ἡμῶν. Τὴν γὰρ σὴν μήτραν, θρόνον
ἐποίησε, καὶ τὴν σὴν γαστέρα, πλατυτέραν
οὐρανῶν ἀπειργάσατο. Ἐπὶ σοὶ χαίρει,

All of Creation rejoices in thee, O full of grace
the angels in heaven and the race of men,
O sanctified temple and spiritual paradise,
the glory of virgins, of whom God was incarnate

Description

The painting is egg tempera and gold leaf on wood. The dimensions are 71.5 cm x 47 cm or 28.2 in x 18.5 in, it was completed in the latter part of the 16th century in Heraklion Crete. The painting follows the traditional maniera greca. The work was influenced by the Venetian style. The Virgin is the central figure in the icon. She is holding Christ while sitting on a throne, she is surrounded by several Seraphim. They are located on an outer circular layer. The Virgin and child are inside of a church archway. A holy dove is above the Virgin. She is surrounded by hierarchal concentric circles. The highest-ranking angels are closest to the Virgin. As the circles travel further from the Virgin the Cherubs and other angels follow. Even further from the center are new and old testament narratives. [5] [6]

At the top of the painting is the crucifixion, there is a second crucifixion to our lower left. A figure of God is to our left in the upper portion of the upper archway. The figure is next to Adam and Eve. The two biblical figures occupy a wilderness on the upper archway transversing the archway from left to right. Immediately below the figure of God the Virgin partakes in the Annunciation. She interacts with the angel for four scenes. There is a detailed visual story of her life. She explains the blessing to her family, then to Joseph. The left narrative ends with Joseph and her traveling on a donkey. On the right side, the Virgin is seated with Jesus for a second time. In a Virgin and child sequence.

The painting is also full of hidden meanings and symbols. There are zodiac symbols. The painting features the Dodekaorton and the houses of Akathistos. The painting exhibits elaborate buildings giving viewers a perspective of 16th-century architecture. At the bottom, is a lagoon reminiscent of Venice, Upper Jerusalem is depicted, as well as saints, who are lined up in dense hierarchical groups. The entire universe praises Mary for her role in Jesus's work. The Greek Inscription reads ΕΠΙ CΟΙ ΧΑΙΡΕΙ ΚΕΧΑΡΙΤΩΜΕΝΗ ΠΑCΑ Η KTICIC, ΑΓΓΕΛΩΝ ΤΟ CΥCTHMA KAI ANΘΡΩΠΩΝ ΤΟ ΓΕΝΟC (Happy and Blessed is Creation, Angles, the Universe and the Genesis of Man.. His signature was ΣΠΟΥΔΙ Κ[ΑΙ] ΚΟΠΟΣ, ΤΟΥ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΥ ΚΛΟΤΖΑ (Tireless Labor and Study of Georgios Klontzas) [7]

Theodore Poulakis was a Greek Renaissance painter and teacher. He is considered the father of the Heptanese School and one of the most prolific painters of Venetian Crete. Poulakis was a member of the Cretan School, his contemporary was Emmanuel Tzanes. Emmanuel Tzanes and Poulakis were active painters of the Cretan School until Candia, went to war with the Ottomans around 1649. Candia finally fell after twenty years of siege in 1669. Poulakis settled on the island of Corfu. Stephanos Tzangarolas was another famous painter in Corfu around the same period. Poulakis's works are likened to Andreas Pavias and Georgios Klontzas. Poulakis works exhibit qualities of the Venetian school. Over 130 of his paintings have survived and can be found all over the world.

Petros Bereketis or Peter the Sweet was one of the most innovative musicians of 17th-century Constantinople. He, together with Panagiotes the New Chrysaphes, Balasios the Priest and Germanos Bishop of New Patras was one of the most influential figures in the evolution of the Byzantine psaltic art following the fall of Constantinople in 1453, although he never was associated with the Patriarchate in Fener. For many years, he served as the protopsaltis of the parochial church St. Constantine of the Hypsomatheia (Samatya) quarter close to the Marmara coast.

He was affiliated with Angelos Akotantos. Most of his work stylistically follows the traditional maniera greca. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were also painters. He was one of the most influential painters of the Cretan School along with Andreas Pavias and Angelos Akotantos. He influenced the works of Georgios Klontzas, Nikolaos Tzafouris, Theophanes the Cretan, Michael Damaskinos and El Greco. According to the Institute for Neohellenic Research, sixty of his paintings have survived.

The Crucifixion is a tempera painting by Andreas Pavias, who was active in Crete during the second half of the 15th century and is considered part of the Cretan School. It is now in the National Gallery of Greece. The painting influenced countless arts. Georgios Klontzas, Emmanuel Lambardos, Ioannis Moskos created similar works. Pavias introduced multiple figures to his Crucifixion. Georgios Klontzas began to employ a similar method in his famous work In Thee Rejoiceth. A work that was emulated by Theodore Poulakis and Franghias Kavertzas. The painting exhibited characteristics of the traditional maniera greca and the Venetian style.

Georgios Klontzas also known as George Klontzas and Zorzi Cloza dito Cristianopullo. He was a scholar, painter, and manuscript illuminator. He is one of the most influential artists of the post-Byzantine period. He defined the Cretan Renaissance. His artistic output included icons, miniatures, triptychs and illuminated manuscripts, commissioned by both Catholic and Orthodox patrons. He is known for occupying his icons with countless figures. The technique is extremely complex and unique to Klontzas. Andreas Pavias attempted this technique in the Crucifixion of Jesus. Klontzas's painting All Creation rejoices in thee is his most popular work. Klontzas influenced Theodore Poulakis he created an extremely similar painting called In Thee Rejoiceth. Klontzas's work is strongly influenced by the Venetian school. His triptychs strongly resemble the works of Gentile da Fabriano, namely the Intercession Altarpiece. Klontzas's Last Judgement resembles Michelangelo's Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. There are very close similarities. There is no indication that Klontzas saw the work but it is a possibility. According to the Institute of Neohellenic Research fifty-four items of his art exist today.

Frantzeskos or Franghias Kavertzas was a Greek painter. His painting style resembles the late Cretan School or early Greek Baroque period. His work was influenced by Georgios Klontzas, Michael Damaskinos and Emmanuel Tzanfournaris. He was active in Crete during the early part of the 17th century roughly after the death of Georgios Klontzas. He painted two icons that are very similar to Klontzas's most notable pieces. Theodore Poulakis also painted similar themes. Kavertzas artwork incorporates the Venetian school. His works influenced Leos Moskos. His most notable works are the Last Judgement, In You Rejoiceth.

Records indicate he traveled to Venice, Cephalonia, and Zakynthos His style resembled the Cretan School. He taught famous painter Panagiotis Doxaras. His most popular work is the Last Judgment. His paintings can be found all over the world. Twenty of his paintings have survived.

Emmanuel Skordilis, also known as Emmanouil Skordilis. He was a Greek Renaissance painter. He was active in Crete around the time Emmanuel Tzanes, Elias Moskos, and Philotheos Skoufos were painting in Crete. He belongs to the elite group of Greek painters that followed the Venetian influenced maniera greca in Crete. Sixty eight of his works survived. He is one of few artists to not travel to the Ionian Islands and participate in the Heptanese School. He eventually settled in the Cyclades on the inland of Milos. Christodoulos Kalergis is another prominent Greek artist associated with the Cyclades, he was from Mykonos. Skordilis was influenced by Georgios Klontzas, Michael Damaskinos and Angelos. Skordilis brought the artistic style of Crete to the Cyclades and influenced countless artists in that region.

His two most notable pieces are The Last Judgment and In You Rejoiceth. The theme and style behind In You Rejoiceth mostly resembles Georgios Klontzas's painting In Thee Rejoiceth. Theodore Poulakis also created his own version of the masterpiece In Thee Rejoiceth towards the second half of the 17th century. Many artists created their own version of the painting. The theme became a prototype in Crete during the 17th century. Leos Moskos also created his own version of the painting. The Klontzas and Poulakis paintings both feature the Hymn to the Virgin. The Kavertzas painting lacks the pictorial representation of the Hymn to the Virgin. The name is used on paintings that are stylistically similar to Klontzas's original work. El Greco was active around the same period and was also from Crete. Klontzas was hired to assess his work. Klontzas completed tempera paintings, triptychs, and illuminated manuscripts. His existing catalog comprises over fifty-four pieces of his art. Klontzas frequently painted the theme of the Last Judgment. Some of his well-known works include The Last Judgement Triptych (Klontzas) and The Last Judgment (Klontzas). The Vatican owns Triptych of the Just in Glory also created by Klontzas which also features the Last Judgment.
