The AllMusic review by Ron Wynn stated: "This is one of a series of excellent recordings by the Roach 4tet in the early '80s that should be examined as not only excellent works, but perhaps even trend setters for a more progressive concept". [2]

Jazz at Massey Hall is a live jazz album featuring a performance by "The Quintet" given on 15 May 1953 at Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The quintet was composed of five leading 'modern' players of the day: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. It was the only time that the five musicians recorded together as a unit, and it was the last recorded meeting of Parker and Gillespie.
The Charles Mingus Quintet & Max Roach is an album by Charles Mingus, recorded at the Café Bohemia in December 1955 and released in 1964. Max Roach makes a guest appearance on two tracks. Other material from the concert were released on the album Mingus at the Bohemia in 1956.
Clifford Brown and Max Roach at Basin Street is a 1956 album by the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, the last album the quintet officially recorded.
