Background and release

Primarily recorded through late March and April 1998, [1] In the New Old-Fashioned Way was originally meant to release in September 1998, [2] but was delayed until January 1999. [1] While In the New Old-Fashioned Way remained unreleased, Fluid Ounces released the extended play Vegetable Kingdom on December 8, 1998 as an interim release, containing outtakes and b-sides. [3]

In the New Old-Fashioned Way was released through Spongebath Records on April 6, 1999. [4] Upon release, In the New Old-Fashioned Way received poor sales, similar to those of their debut album Big Notebook for Easy Piano (1997), due to “record company impropriety” by Spongebath. [5] A Japanese edition of In the New Old-Fashioned Way was released by Avex Records on May 30, 2001, [6] alongside fellow Spongebath band Self's album Gizmodgery on April 25. [7] Although In the New Old-Fashioned Way did not sell well in America, it sold extremely well in Japan, gaining the band a cult following in the country. [5]
