The Inauguration of Ezenwo Nyesom Wike as the 6th Governor of Rivers State took place on Friday, 29 May 2015 at the Liberation Stadium in Elekahia, Port Harcourt. [1] The ceremony marked the beginning of the first four-year term of Ezenwo Nyesom Wike as Governor and Ipalibo Banigo as Deputy Governor. [1]

Wike won in the 2015 gubernatorial election, receiving 87.77 percent of the popular vote. He was sworn-in in accordance with section 185 (2) of the amended Constitution of Nigeria. [2] Prior to that, the Supreme Court had set aside the judgement of the Appeal Court which nullified the election. [3]

Wike Inaugural Committee

The inauguration committee was set up in April 2015 along with the transition committee. Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps, Austin Opara, was assigned as chairman with Jacob Beredugo as secretary. [4]

Pre-inaugural events

The full schedule of the events was unveiled by the committee on 20 May 2015 during a press briefing. On 24 May, a pre-inaugural church service was held at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, Garrison. On 26 May, pro-chancellor of the University of Uyo, Kimse Okoko presented a lecture at Aztech Arcum entitled Democracy and Good Governance Towards A New Rivers State. The next day, which was Children's Day, a novelty football match was staged at Sharks Stadium. [5]

Inaugural events

Swearing-in ceremony

On 29 May 2015, the official swearing-in of Governor-elect Wike took place at Liberation Stadium, Elekahia. Arriving at the venue, Wike went round the stadium in a motorcade to greet the crowd and also gave his acceptance speech. Due to the vacuum that existed in the office of the Chief Judge and the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Rivers State around that period of time, Wike was sworn-in in accordance with the provisions of Section 185 (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Kate Abiri, administered the Oath of Office. Wike had also solicited the cooperation and support of Riverian stakeholders in restoring the state to its former glory. His predecessor Chibuike Amaechi did not attend the ceremony as many had expected, but instead, was in Abuja for the presidential inauguration at Eagle Square. [5] [6]

It is with great humility and gratitude to God Almighty, who makes all things well that I address you today. I feel so humbled, blessed and grateful to God, whose holy hands in my life and the trust you have in me, provided the opportunity for me to serve as your Governor for the next four years.

Let me on behalf of the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs. Ipalibo Banigo express our deep appreciation to you all for bestowing this great honour and responsibility on us.

Rivers State has been rescued and reclaimed. It is a new day in our history, a new dawn to repair and restore our dear state to the path of sanity. I invite you all to the table of brotherhood for the new beginning. I reiterate my declaration that in the election there were no losers and winners. Rather, Rivers State was the winner and so we are all winners.

Post-inaugural events

The Governor, First Lady Eberechi Wike and Deputy Governor Ipalibo Banigo later proceeded to Salvation Ministries for a thanksgiving service. They were led in a thanksgiving prayer and praise session by pastor David Ibiyeomie. Some dignitaries who attended the service were Patience Jonathan, Ike Ekweremadu, Uche Secondus and Olisa Metuh, among others. [7] On 1 June 2015, the 8th Rivers State House of Assembly was inaugurated. [5]

He is an Ikwerre from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State. He is a member of the People's Democratic Party and was educated at Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

Felix Amaechi Obuah is a Nigerian business magnate, politician and philanthropist originally from Omoku, Rivers State, Nigeria. He has been the chairman of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party since 2013 and was reelected in May 2016 for his second term. Obuah has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Ibadan. With a business career spanning over 25 years, his diverse interests range from properties, real estate, hotels, resorts, oil, trading and construction.

Ipalibo Gogo Banigo is a Nigerian medical doctor, politician and the first female Deputy Governor of Rivers State. A member of the People's Democratic Party, she has held various important offices at the Rivers State Ministry of Health. During her service, she assumed the positions of Director of Public Health Services, Acting Commissioner, Director-General and Permanent Secretary. She achieved prominence first in 1995, as Secretary to the Government of Rivers State before serving as Head of Service of the state. In December 2014, Ezenwo Wike selected her as his running mate in the 2015 election. She was elected Deputy Governor and assumed office on 29 May 2015.

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State is the second highest-ranking official in the executive branch of Rivers State, after the Governor. The Constitution of 1999 requires that the gubernatorial nominee of a party select his or her deputy governor running mate after the primary. The Deputy Governor's duties include assisting the Governor and replacing him or her in the case of death, resignation, removal, impeachment, absence or incapacity due to illness.

Daisy Wotube Okocha served as the 7th Chief Judge of Rivers State, in charge of the state's High Court of Justice, and Judicial Service Commission. She was appointed to the office by Governor Ezenwo Wike on 4 January 2016, and held it until her retirement on 15 January 2016. She had also served as Chief Judge in an acting capacity before attaining the substantive appointment.

The following is a timeline of the governorship of Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, also known as the Wike administration, from his inauguration as Governor of Rivers State on 29 May 2015 to present.

The First Wike Executive Council was the Executive Council of Rivers State between 5 June 2015 and 24 June 2017. It was led by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike with Ipalibo Banigo as Vice-Chairman. The first set of appointments to the cabinet were made on 5 June 2015. The designees included Kenneth Kobani, Chukwuemeka Woke, Emmanuel C. Aguma, Fred Kpakol, Onimim Jacks, Emmanuel Okah and Opunabo Inko-Tariah. Governor Wike appointed Desmond Akawor, Ambassador to South Korea, to serve as Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority.

Tasie Cyprian Wike is a Nigerian lawyer who, as of 2014, was Chairman of the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology (RSCHST). His appointment to the office was made by Governor Chibuike Amaechi whose tenure expired on 29 May 2015.

Tonye Briggs-Oniyide is the current Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. She was appointed in 2015 by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, replacing Nnabuihe Imegwu.

The 2016 PDP National Convention was held on Saturday, 21 May 2016 at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It marked the first time the National Convention took place outside Abuja, Nigeria's federal capital. The convention drew delegates from the 36 states, as well as the 12 governors of the PDP, national and state assembly members, former governors, Board of Trustees members and former National Working Committee members. Among those who graced the convention were the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Senator Godswill Akpabio and former Senate President David Mark.

Bathuel Harrison Iheanyichukwu is a civil engineer and architect, who serves as the current Rivers State Commissioner of Works. He was appointed to this position by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, confirmed by the Rivers State House of Assembly and sworn in on 9 May 2016. He replaces Kelvin Wachukwu, who was suspended indefinitely on 1 April 2016.


Roseline Sonayee Konya is an academic from Khana, Rivers State. She is professor of Toxicology and Pharmacology at the University of Port Harcourt. She served as Commissioner of Environment in the cabinet of Governor Peter Odili and was re-appointed to same office in the cabinet of Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.

Port Harcourt Pleasure Park

Port Harcourt PLEASURE PARK is a public recreation park in Niger-Delta's oil rich garden city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. It is strategically located along the major Aba Road, and flanked between the Army Barracks and Air Force base junction, on an expansive open land with 24-7-365 internal security.

The Rivers State gubernatorial election took place on 9 March 2019, concurrently with various other state level elections. A rerun of the vote was held in Abua–Odual, Ahoada West, Gokana and Opobo–Nkoro on 13 April. One-term incumbent Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike of the People's Democratic Party was eligible to run for re-election. He won in 2015 with 87.77% of the vote.

Princewill Ogbogbula is the current Commissioner of Youth Development in the Executive Council of Rivers State. He was appointed to the position in 2015 by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.

Dumnamene Robinson Dekor also known as Dum Dekor is a Nigerian politician who was Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 2007 to 2011. He represented Khana II in the 6th Rivers State House of Assembly and is a member of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party. On 15 September 2017, he was sworn in as a commissioner-designee by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike and on 20 September, he was assigned to the Rivers State Ministry of Works.
