India competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. It was the nation's first appearance at the modern Olympic Games. This marked the first participation of an Asian country in the Olympic Games.

One athlete, Norman Pritchard, participated in athletics. [lower-alpha 1] He competed in five events and won two silver medals. Until 2020, these were the only medals won by India in athletics. India was classified 19th in the overall medal table, which represents its best ever placement till date.

Background

The Indian Olympic Association was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1927. [5] However, by this time, the nation had already competed in four Olympic Games. [6] This edition at Paris marked the nation's first appearance at the Summer Olympics. [7] This marked the first participation of an Asian country in the Olympic Games. [8] India was classified 19th in the overall medal table, which represents its best ever placement till date. [9]

Norman Pritchard competed in five events at the Games. [3] In the 200 m hurdles, he set a then Olympic record 26.8 seconds in the semifinals. In the final, he won the silver with a timing of 26 seconds after USA’s Alvin Kraenzlein registered a new Olympic record of 25.4 seconds to win the gold. [12] [13] In the 200 m, he finished second in the semifinals to qualify for the final. In the final, he registered another second place with a time of 22.8 seconds after Walter Tewksbury of the USA won gold with a time of 22.2 seconds. [12] [14]

Notes

  1. 1 2 In the track and field statistics published by the World Athletics prior to the 2004 Summer Olympics, Pritchard was listed as having competed for Great Britain in 1900. Pritchard was chosen to represent Great Britain after competing in the British AAA championship in June 1900. [1] [2] But he was born in India and the International Olympic Committee regards him as having competed for India. [3] [4]

Major Deshamanya Duncan M. White MBE, ED was a Sri Lankan sportsman. He was the first Ceylonese athlete to win an Olympic medal, winning silver in the 400-metre hurdles at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. He was also the second South Asian to have won an Olympic medal in track and field after Norman Pritchard of India, with the third being Susanthika Jayasinghe, another Sri Lankan, who won a silver medal in the 200 metres in 2000.

The 1900 Games were the first time the 200 metres was contested. The races were held on a track of 500 metres in circumference. Eight athletes from seven nations competed. The event was won by Walter Tewksbury of the United States. Norman Pritchard of India took silver while Australian Stan Rowley earned bronze.

Zharnel Hughes is an Anguilla-born British sprinter who specialises in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Born and raised in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla, he has competed internationally for Great Britain in the Olympic Games, World Athletics and European Athletics events, and for England at the Commonwealth Games, since 2015. A double Commonwealth Games, double European Championships gold medalist as part of the 4 x 100 metres relay, Hughes has twice been European champion individually; over 100 metres in 2018, and 200 metres in 2022. In 2023, he broke both British sprint records, before winning his first global individual medal, a bronze in the 100 metres at the 2023 World championships.

Subedar Major Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. Considered as the greatest javelin thrower India has produced, Chopra won the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics, becoming the first Asian athlete in javelin throw to do so at Olympics. He is also the first Asian to win the javelin gold in the World Athletics Championships after his win in 2023. Chopra has won gold medals in almost every major javelin throw tournament. He has a streak of having a podium finish in 23 consecutive competitions, dating back to 2020.In particular, since June 2021, he has continued to achieve extremely consistent results, finishing as runner-up or better in 20 consecutive competitions, finishing first overall in the qualifying rounds at two consecutive Olympic Games, and first and second overall in the qualifying rounds at two consecutive World Athletics Championships. Since his 2016 performance, he holds the junior javelin throw world record with 86.48 m.
