The Indiana University School of Health and Human Sciences (SHHS) is a health sciences school at Indiana University Indianapolis. SHHS offers programs in kinesiology, nutrition, physical therapy, health sciences, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and tourism, event, and sport management.
SHHS was established due to a merger in 2018 between The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management and the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. [1]
The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences originated with the creation of allied health programs in the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1941. [2] In 1951, all of the allied health programs were placed in a Division of Allied Health Sciences, which was administered separately from the medical school. By the 1980s, the Division of Allied Health Sciences offered degrees such as dietetics, anesthesiology, health administration, respiratory therapy, radiological technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical technology, medical record administration, and cytotechnology. [2] In 1991, allied sciences separated from the medical school to become the School of Allied Health Sciences, which was then renamed the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2003. [3]
The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management was the oldest school at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and the oldest existing program in the United States that trained students to become physical education teachers. [4] The school originated in 1866 in New York City as the Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union. [5] The school subsequently moved to Chicago in 1871, relocated to Milwaukee, and then settled in Indianapolis in 1907. [5] The Normal College joined Indiana University in 1941, and was renamed the School of Physical Education in 1972 to reflect the school's mission of training physical education teachers. [4] In 1994, the school expanded its focus to include IUPUI's military science program and the Department of Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management. [4] The school established the first university institute focusing on sports innovation. [6]
The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in exercise science, kinesiology, health sciences, tourism/event management, sports management, and sports analytics. There are also several doctorate-level health professions programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and dietetics.

Kinesiology is the scientific study of human body movement. Kinesiology addresses physiological, anatomical, biomechanical, pathological, neuropsychological principles and mechanisms of movement. Applications of kinesiology to human health include biomechanics and orthopedics; strength and conditioning; sport psychology; motor control; skill acquisition and motor learning; methods of rehabilitation, such as physical and occupational therapy; and sport and exercise physiology. Studies of human and animal motion include measures from motion tracking systems, electrophysiology of muscle and brain activity, various methods for monitoring physiological function, and other behavioral and cognitive research techniques.
The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is a major, multi-campus medical school located throughout the U.S. state of Indiana and is the graduate medical school of Indiana University. There are nine campuses throughout the state; the principal research, educational, and medical center is located on the Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus in Indianapolis. With 1,452 MD students, 203 PhD students, and 1,356 residents and fellows in the 2022–23 academic year, IUSM is the largest medical school in the United States. Forbes Tower is a building of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Located directly behind the historic Iroquois Building, Forbes Tower was designed by the architectural firm Tasso Katselas Associates and was completed in 1996 at a cost of $55 million and sits over the top of a 572-car underground parking garage. It is known for its nursing research and education, scholarship of teaching and nursing practice, and for its collaborations with IU hospitals and clinical partners. Established in 1914 as the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, it awarded its first nursing diplomas in 1917 and was renamed the IU School of Nursing in 1956. It offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, and two doctoral degrees: Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Willis D. Gatch Hall, shortened to Gatch Hall, was constructed as an addition for the former Robert W. Long Hospital. Gatch Hal served as additional space for outpatient services, clinical services, and imaging services. Following the construction of University Hospital and the reorganization of medical services on the IU Medical Center, Gatch Hall would transition to an academic center supporting the School of Allied Health, Division of Nuclear Medicine, and Department of Radiology. The building continues to serve as an academic center for various divisions and departments within the IU School of Medicine. Gatch Hall was one of the early buildings on the IU Medical Center alongside Fesler Hall, Emerson Hall, and Coleman Hall. The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute and the School of Nursing Building are more recent additions to the IU Medical Center cluster.
