Infant Island is an American blackgaze screamo band formed in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 2016. The band consists of vocalist Daniel Kost, guitarists Alexander Rudenshiold and Winston Givler, bassist Kyle Guerra, and drummer Austin O'Rourke.
Infant Island was formed in the summer 2016 by vocalist Daniel Kost, guitarist Alexander Rudenshiold, bassist Kyle Guerra, and drummer James Rakestraw. On August 1, 2018, in advance of a U.S. and Canada tour, they released their self-titled debut album to critical acclaim. [1] [2] [3] In the same month, the album was featured in Noisey's "Summer of Screamo" column, in which writer Dan Ozzi called it "a linchpin for modern screamo". [4] In October 2018, the band parted ways with drummer James Rakestraw – replacing him with Austin O'Rourke who had formerly worked with bassist Guerra in smallhands, an early touring and split EP partner band for Infant Island.
In February 2019, Infant Island was featured in The Washington Post, along with contemporaries Vein and Portrayal of Guilt, as delivering "new life" to screamo. [5]
In a March 2019 interview for RVA Magazine, guitarist Alexander Rudenshiold said that the band's second album was entirely recorded. [6] In April 2020 the band announced that their second album, Beneath, would be released in May of that year on Dog Knights Productions. They also released a music video for "Someplace Else", the last track from the album. [7] On April 17, 2020, Infant Island released the second single for Beneath, "Stare Spells", along with a previously unannounced "mini-LP" titled Sepulcher to positive reviews. [8] [9] Beneath was released on May 15, 2020 to positive reviews. [10] [11] Though chronologically it was released before Beneath, Sepulcher consists of material recorded almost a year after. [8] Beneath was featured on several "Best of 2020" lists. [12] [13] [14]
In response to the George Floyd protests, on June 5 Infant Island released a compilation album titled Collections 1, donating the proceeds to bail funds and mutual aid groups supporting protesters in Richmond and Fredericksburg, Virginia. [15] [16] Collections 1 contains previously unreleased tracks, reworks of songs by the band's members, as well as "rarities" from their compilation appearances and split albums.
In November 2023, Infant Island announced that their third album, which was written in 2020, Obsidian Wreath would be released in January 2024 on Touché Amoré frontman Jeremy Bolm's label Secret Voice, and shared the album's lead single "Another Cycle". [17] [18] The label had previously featured a song from the band on its Balladeers, Redefined compilation earlier in 2023. [19]
Infant Island's musical style has been universally described as screamo, and has often been compared to their regional predecessors Pg.99, City of Caterpillar, and Majority Rule. [2] [5] In 2018, after the release of their self-titled album, Stereogum 's Chris DeVille described their style as "Deafheaven reframed in the sonic palette of Diary -era Sunny Day Real Estate". [1] The band's 2020 releases Sepulcher and Beneath saw them shift towards a more directly metallic approach, with reviewers drawing comparisons to grindcore, [20] sludge metal, [21] and particularly black metal. Screamo is an aggressive subgenre of emo that emerged in the early 1990s and emphasizes "willfully experimental dissonance and dynamics". San Diego-based bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow pioneered the genre in the early 1990s, and it was developed in the late 1990s mainly by bands from the East Coast of the United States such as Pg. 99, Orchid, Saetia, and I Hate Myself. Screamo is strongly influenced by hardcore punk and characterized by the use of screamed vocals. Lyrical themes usually include emotional pain, death, romance, and human rights. The term "screamo" has frequently been mistaken as referring to any music with screaming.
Saetia is a New York City-based screamo band. While relatively unknown during their initial existence, the band is now seen as one of the most critically lauded bands of the late-1990s screamo scene. Stewart Mason of AllMusic described their music as an "essential document" for fans of screamo.
Gouge Away is an American hardcore punk band based in Florida that formed in 2012. The band is influenced by post-hardcore and noise rock bands such as The Pixies, the Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, Unwound, the Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Nirvana. Gouge Away released its debut album , Dies in 2016 to underground acclaim, and released its second album Burnt Sugar through Deathwish Inc. in 2018.
The emo revival,also known as post-emo or fourth wave emo, was an underground emo movement which began in the late 2000s and had declined by the mid–to late 2010s. The movement began towards the end of the 2000s third wave of emo, with bands like Tigers Jaw, Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing who distanced themselves from the era's pop sensibilities and instead revived the sound of 1990s second wave emo. This coincided with the rise of bands, like Touché Amoré, La Dispute and Defeater, who too embraced the influence of 1990s emo, as well as screamo and post-hardcore.

Vein.fm is an American hardcore punk band from Boston that formed in 2013. They are known for their frequent tours and have performed shows with groups such as Code Orange and Twitching Tongues while in Europe. In 2017 the band was signed onto Closed Casket Activities, who would issue their first full-length work Errorzone to positive reception among critics, even appearing on Revolver's early "Best Albums of 2018" list. The album also managed to peak at number 21 on Billboard's Hard Rock album chart. In July 2020, after the release of their remix album, the band announced it changed its name to Vein.fm.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy is an American hardcore punk band formed in San Diego, California, in 2016. It was founded by vocalist Connie Sgarbossa, Ethan Sgarbossa and Taylor Allen. Their name is taken from a phrase shown on many of the end title cards of the 1998 anime Cowboy Bebop.

The band reunited in 2017, performing benefit shows with Pg. 99 and City of Caterpillar.

It was produced by Matthew Michel of Majority Rule at his studio in Dunn Loring, Virginia. The album features a guest vocal performance from Logan Rivera of Gillian Carter. "Death Portrait" is a re-recording of a song which originally appeared on the band's 4-way split Hymnes aux Désarrois de la Peau.
