The International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) (Chinese :国际华人数学家大会) is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to bringing together Chinese mathematicians to discuss current research in mathematics as well as recognizing the achievements of Chinese mathematicians and mathematicians of Chinese descent around the world. The Congress was founded in 1998 and has been held every three years since. [1]
The first Congress was convened in Beijing at the Great Hall of the People in December 1998. Since then, there have been six Congresses, held in Hong Kong, Hangzhou, Taipei in addition to Beijing. Universities and institutions in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan host the Congress on a rotating basis. [1] [2]
Past Congresses have been led by prominent mathematicians such as Fields Medalist Shing-Tung Yau, Kai Lai Chung, Alice Chang, among others. [2] The Congress is sponsored by Shing-Tung Yau and Hong Kong entrepreneur Ronnie Chan. [3] ICCM is run in collaboration with institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academia Sinica of Taiwan. [2]
The ICCM awards the Chern Prize and the Morningside Medal, among other prizes, to Chinese mathematicians who have made significant contributions to pure or applied mathematics. The Morningside Medal was established with the First Congress in 1998 and is awarded to mathematicians younger than 45; winners are traditionally announced on the first day of the ICCM. [1] The Chern Prize was first awarded at the Second Congress in 2001 in honor of differential geometer Shiing-Shen Chern; thus it predates the Chern Prize awarded by the International Mathematical Union by nine years. [2] Winners of both prizes are selected by a committee of prominent Chinese mathematicians. [3]
The ICCM also presents the International Cooperation Award to individuals who promote mathematics through collaboration, teaching, and other forms of support. [2]

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) is a public research university in Hsinchu, Taiwan. It was first founded in Beijing. After the Chinese Civil War, president Mei Yiqi and other academics fled with the retreating Nationalist government to Taiwan, where they founded National Tsing Hua University in 1956. The university remains independent and distinct from Tsinghua University in Beijing.
Shing-Tung Yau is a Chinese-American mathematician. He is the director of the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center at Tsinghua University and professor emeritus at Harvard University. Until 2022, Yau was the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics at Harvard, at which point he moved to Tsinghua.
Shiing-Shen Chern was a Chinese American mathematician and poet. He made fundamental contributions to differential geometry and topology. He has been called the "father of modern differential geometry" and is widely regarded as a leader in geometry and one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, winning numerous awards and recognition including the Wolf Prize and the inaugural Shaw Prize. In memory of Shiing-Shen Chern, the International Mathematical Union established the Chern Medal in 2010 to recognize "an individual whose accomplishments warrant the highest level of recognition for outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics."
Richard Streit Hamilton was an American mathematician who served as the Davies Professor of Mathematics at Columbia University.

Shiu-Yuen Cheng (鄭紹遠) is a Hong Kong mathematician. He is currently the Chair Professor of Mathematics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Cheng received his Ph.D. in 1974, under the supervision of Shiing-Shen Chern, from University of California at Berkeley. Cheng then spent some years as a post-doctoral fellow and assistant professor at Princeton University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Then he became a full professor at University of California at Los Angeles. Cheng chaired the Mathematics departments of both the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in the 1990s. In 2004, he became the Dean of Science at HKUST. In 2012, he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
Tian Gang is a Chinese mathematician. He is a professor of mathematics at Peking University and Higgins Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. He is known for contributions to the mathematical fields of Kähler geometry, Gromov-Witten theory, and geometric analysis.

Horng-Tzer Yau is a Taiwanese-American mathematician.

Kefeng Liu, is a Chinese-American mathematician who is known for his contributions to geometric analysis, particularly the geometry, topology and analysis of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and Calabi–Yau manifolds. He is a professor of mathematics at University of California, Los Angeles, as well as the executive director of the Center of Mathematical Sciences at Zhejiang University. He is best known for his collaboration with Bong Lian and Shing-Tung Yau in which they establish some enumerative geometry conjectures motivated by mirror symmetry.
The Chern Prize in Mathematics was established in 2001 in honor of Professor Shiing-Shen Chern. The Chern Prize is presented every three years at the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians to Chinese mathematicians and those of Chinese descent for "exceptional contributions to mathematical research or to public service activities in support of mathematics". Winners are selected by a committee of mathematicians to recognize the achievements of mathematicians of Chinese descent. In 2010, a special commemorative event was held in Beijing in addition to the normal award presentation to celebrate the centennial of Professor Chern's birth.
The Morningside Medal of Mathematics is awarded to exceptional mathematicians of Chinese descent under the age of forty-five for their seminal achievements in mathematics and applied mathematics. The winners of the Morningside Medal of Mathematics are traditionally announced at the opening ceremony of the triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians. Each Morningside Medalist receives a certificate, a medal, and cash award of US$25,000 for a gold medal, or US$10,000 for a silver medal.

Peter Wai-Kwong Li is an American mathematician whose research interests include differential geometry and partial differential equations, in particular geometric analysis. After undergraduate work at California State University, Fresno, he received his Ph.D. at University of California, Berkeley under Shiing-Shen Chern in 1979. Presently he is Professor Emeritus at University of California, Irvine, where he has been located since 1991.
Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA), located in Huairou district of Beijing, is an international mathematics research institution, co-sponsored by Beijing Municipal Government and Tsinghua University.
