The International Mugham Center of Azerbaijan is a center of Azerbaijani arts and music aiming to promote, preserve and popularize the mugham genre of Azerbaijani music. It is located in Baku Boulevard, in downtown Baku.
The Mugham Center was built on initiative of the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva. Mugham is a genre included in the representative list of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.[1][2] The official opening of the International Mugham Center took place on December 27, 2008.[3] UNESCO's ninth Director-General Koichiro Matsuura also participated in that opening ceremony.[4]
Architectural description
The construction of the building started in April 2005. The center covers 7,500 square meters and has 3 stories.[1] The funding was provided by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.[5] The design of the building was based on the elements and shapes of the tar, an Azeri musical instrument used in performing mugham. Furthermore, the center was commenced on the base of the architecture works of the Vahid Tansu, Xauddin Yayk and Etirne Ahmed. The concert hall fits 350 people. The center also has a club, 80-seat restaurant called "Ud", study halls and record studios. Modern heating and ventilation systems were also provided in the center.[6] The building was constructed with equipments from Italy, Austria, France and Turkey.[6]
Target of the center
The center hosts mugham festivals, concerts, and recitals of various singers and performers. Young performers get aware of the art of mugham which has a special role in the Azerbaijani music culture. The center hosts famous masters, mugham evenings, international conferences as well as festivals.[6]
The International World of Mugham Festival (Azerbaijani: Beynəlxalq Muğam Dünyası Festivalı) was held on Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s initiative, on March 18–25, 2009, in Baku. The opening ceremony of the festival was held on March 20, in the International Mugham Center of Azerbaijan. A contest of mugham singers, multiple mugham operas, symphonic and classical mugham concerts were held during the festival. The festival was concluded by a gala concert, which was held on March 25, 2009, in Heydar Aliyev Palace, in Baku.[9][10]
A scientific symposium of mugham was held during the international festival and lasted for 3 days. [11] About 30 scientists, musicians, and also promoters of traditional eastern music from the more than 16 countries took part at the symposium.[12] Presentations about musical cultures of Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan were given during the festival and the issue of First Nagorno-Karabakh War was also raised there.[13][14]
Mugham or Mughamat is one of the many classical compositions from Azerbaijan, contrasting with tasnif and ashik.
The Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is currently used mostly for football matches. It served as the home ground for the Azerbaijan national football team until they moved to the Baku Olympic Stadium. It holds 31,200 seats making it the second largest stadium in the country. The stadium is also used by the Azerbaijan Premier League clubs in the final rounds of European competitions.

Hajibaba Huseynali oghlu Huseynov was an Azerbaijani khananda, poet, pedagogue. He was awarded the People's Artiste of the Azerbaijan SSR.
Heydar Aliyev Order is the supreme order of Azerbaijan. The order was ratified by legislation of Azerbaijan Republic by the Decree No. 896-IIQ on 22 April 2005. The Heydar Aliyev Order is given to the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan for special contributions to the prosperity, greatness and glory of Azerbaijan; for courage and bravery displayed in defense of the Motherland and state interests of the Azerbaijan Republic. The Order is given to the President of Azerbaijan according to status.
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation is a private foundation headed by Azerbaijan's First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva. The foundation is named after Azerbaijan's former president, Heydar Aliyev – the father of the incumbent president Ilham Aliyev. The foundation has been criticized for not being transparent about its finances, and for being a vehicle of corruption.
Gabala International Music Festival is an annual festival of classical music held every summer beginning in 2009 in Gabala, Azerbaijan. The festival is organised with the support of Heydar Aliyev Foundation at the initiative of the rector of the Baku Academy of Music Farhad Badalbeyli and conductor Dmitri Yablonski. At this festival, musicians perform in the open air. Participants have included musicians from Europe, the US and Israel, as well as musicians from republics of the former USSR. In 2009, a contest of young pianists was held at the same time with the musical festival. Jazz and mugham evenings were held along with classical music concerts. In 2010, the festival was held on August. General director of UNESCO Irina Bokova was in the opening ceremony of the festival. The festival began with the performance of overture from Uzeyir Hajibeyov's "Koroglu" opera as in 2009. Opening ceremony of the festival was charged to Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Such musicians as Dmitri Yablonski, Yuri Bashmet, Khloe Khanslip and other Azerbaijani and foreign musicians took part in the festival. In 2011, the festival lasted from July 15 to August 5.
The Uzeyir Hajibeyov International Music Festival is held in September, since 2009, in Azerbaijan. Musical events are held in several cities of Azerbaijan, and the main ceremonies take place in Baku.
International Mstislav Rostropovich Festival – a festival organized by Mstislav Rostropovich in 2006, in Baku and dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s birthday was the basis of this festival. The festival dedicated to eminent Baku citizen Msitslav Rostropovich was held in December. Organizers of the festival were the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
