The Irish film industry has grown somewhat from the late 20th century, due partly to the promotion of the sector by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and the introduction of heavy tax breaks. According to the Irish Audiovisual Content Production Sector Review carried out by the Irish Film Board and PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2008 this sector, has gone from 1,000 people employed six or seven years previously, to well over 6,000 people in that sector by the time of the report. The sector was reportedly valued at over €557.3 million and represented 0.3% of GDP. Most films are produced in English as Ireland is largely Anglophone, though some productions are made in Irish either wholly or partially.

Love/Hate is an Irish crime drama television series, commissioned by RTÉ Television and created by Stuart Carolan. Set in Dublin, the show depicts fictional characters in the city's criminal underworld. The show is mostly filmed in Dublin, with some scenes shot in bordering counties. Since its release, it continued to grow in popularity, with series 3 attracting close to one million viewers on several occasions.

Balfe rose to prominence when she played Claire Fraser in the Starz historical drama television series Outlander (2014–present), for which she received four Golden Globe Award nominations. Her performance in Belfast (2021) earned her nominations for the Golden Globe, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards.

The Awards Ceremony took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Burlington Road Dublin, and was broadcast on RTÉ One at 9.45pm. Handsome Devil is a 2016 Irish coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by John Butler. It centres around Ned, an ostracised teenager at an elite, rugby-obsessed, all-boys boarding school in Ireland. Ned's unlikely friendship with his new roommate Conor, the school's star rugby player, is tested by those around them. The film features themes of homosexuality, while examining hypocrisy and snobbery in the Irish private school system. It was shot on location in Castleknock College, and is based on Butler's own experiences attending Blackrock College in the 1980s.

The 16th Irish Film & Television Academy Awards took place on 18 October 2020. Because no ceremony was held in 2019, this ceremony honoured films and television drama released in both 2018 and 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no physical ceremony took place; instead, there was a "virtual ceremony" hosted by Deirdre O’Kane.

For the first and second Irish Film and Television Awards ceremonies, supporting performances for film and television were combined into one category. Up until the 2018–2019 film season, awards were given for films released in Ireland the previous year.
The Irish Film and Television Award for Best Supporting Actor was an award bestowed by the Irish Film & Television Academy celebrating outstanding performances by actors in supporting roles in films and television dramas. It was a joint category until 2005, where actors were nominated from films and television dramas for the same award. The 3rd Irish Film & Television Awards introduced the current separate categories: Irish Film & Television Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Film and Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role - Television.
