The Big Christopher (Latvian : Lielais Kristaps) is the highest award given in Latvian cinema. Established in 1977, it is given out at the Latvian National Film Festival. [1]
Due to different reasons, the festival has not been held in 1992, 1994 to 1995, 1997 and 1999, and was held biannually from 2001 to 2009, with no festival being held in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Since 2014, it was held again every year.

Cinemas of Latvia date back to 1910 when the first short films were made. The first cinematic screening in Riga took place on May 28, 1896. By 1914, all major cities in Latvia had cinemas where newsreels, documentaries, and mostly foreign-made short films were screened.
Loss is a 2008 Lithuanian psychological thriller film directed, co-written and co-produced by Latvian film director Māris Martinsons. A Limousine the Colour of Midsummer's Eve is a 1981 Soviet-Latvian comedy-drama film directed by Jānis Streičs. Movie was produced by Riga Film Studio. The film was awarded the Latvian National Film Prize Lielais Kristaps in 1981. The film is included into Latvian Culture Canon, and voted all-time best Latvian film in popular vote. It is shown every year on TV prior to the summer solstice festival of Jāņi, which is a national holiday in Latvia. The movie is about the struggle of two related families for the eighty-year-old aunt's inheritance through comic and romantic events.

Jacob, Mimmi and the Talking Dogs is a 2019 Latvian–Polish animated film directed by Edmunds Jansons and based on the children's book Dog Town by Luīze Pastore. Funded by the National Film Centre of Latvia, Polish Film Institute and Creative Europe Media, the film is produced by Sabine Andersone for the Latvian Atom Art Studio and co-produced by Jakub Karwowski for the Polish Letko Studio. The film received several nominations, and won Best Animated Film at the 32nd International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Iran.
