The Asian Film Awards are presented annually by the Asian Film Awards Academy to recognise the excellence of the film professionals in the film industries of Asian cinema.
On January 29, 2007, Wilfred Wong, the Chairman of Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, announced the launch of the Asian Film Awards (AFA). [1] The 1st Asian Film Awards occurred on March 20, 2007, on the opening night of the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. It honoured the best film achievements of the Asian cinema in the year 2006. It was attended by about 4000 guests from around the world. [2]
The AFA Presentation Ceremony takes place as part of the Entertainment Expo Hong Kong Opening Gala. Eminent filmmakers and superstars from around the world are invited to bestow awards upon the winner(s) of each category, making the ceremony a dazzling extravaganza as well as an influential cultural event. Throughout its history and since its inauguration in 2007, Chinese-language films and professionals from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong have dominated the awards. [4] [5] [6] [7]
On February 13, 2007, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council hosted a celebration of Park Chan-wook's I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK announcement of being the opening film for the 31st Hong Kong International Film Festival at a reception in Berlin. At the same event the AFA trophy, designed by award-winning production designer, William Chang, was also unveiled. [8]
According to William Chang, his inspiration behind the artwork was his admiration to a combination of architectural drawings and his own collection of antique statues. Measuring 36 cm (14 in), the trophy symbolises the joy and the accomplishment of all the award winners. [9]
The current trophy is gold as a whole but had changed significantly before. The first trophies that were handed in 2007 has its trophy in black with a white base. In the 2nd AFA, the current gold colour was used as whole but in 2009 for its 3rd AFA instead of a gold base, it has a black base. Then in 2010, the whole gold trophy had returned and now used nowadays.
To be eligible, films must be feature length (more than 60 minutes); be in 35mm or 70mm film format or digital format suitable for exhibition in cinemas; and be fiction films from Asia. This encompasses all the cinemas of Asia: East Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia. Additionally, the films must have English subtitles.
The films must have been released between January 1 and December 31 of the year preceding the awards ceremony, and have been exhibited through a domestic theatrical release and distribution to at least one other country; been premiered at an international film festival; or received national film awards.
The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society compile the preliminary nomination list with the participation of the two parties who can submit films for the consideration to be included in the nomination list which are:
After the Society finalised the nomination list, the Jury and the Voting Members (composed of previous winners from past AFA) would then vote in an Online Balloting System where it would be counted, tallied and kept confidential until the day of the AFA by a reputable firm of certified public accountants.
These special awards are not always presented on a consistent annual basis. The Society chooses the special awards to be given for a certain year.

The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Taipei Golden Horse Awards are a film festival and associated awards ceremony held annually in Taiwan. The festival and ceremony were founded in 1962 by the Government Information Office of the Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan and is now run as an independent organisation. The awards ceremony is usually held in November or December in Taipei, although the event has also been held in other locations in Taiwan in recent times.

He is considered one of the most prominent filmmakers of South Korean cinema as well as 21st-century world cinema. His films have gained notoriety for their cinematography and framing, black humor and often brutal subject matter.
The Hong Kong Film Awards, founded in 1982, is an annual film awards ceremony in Hong Kong. The ceremonies are typically in April. The awards recognise achievement in various aspects of filmmaking, such as directing, screenwriting, acting and cinematography. The awards are the Hong Kong equivalent to the American Academy Awards.
Park Hae-il is a South Korean actor. He began his acting career in theater, but soon gained the film industry's attention in 2003 with Scent of Love, Jealousy Is My Middle Name and Memories of Murder. Park's film career took off, with leading roles in notable films, including Rules of Dating (2005), The Host (2006), Paradise Murdered (2007), Moss (2010), War of the Arrows (2011), Whistle Blower (2014), Decision to Leave (2022) and Hansan: Rising Dragon (2022). Park received multiple Best Actor honors for his performances in War of the Arrows (2011) and Decision to Leave (2022).
Tang Wei is a Chinese actress. She rose to prominence for her appearance in Lust, Caution (2007), for which she received a nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star Award at the 61st British Academy Film Awards. She gained further acclaim for her leading performances in Late Autumn (2010), Finding Mr. Right (2013), The Golden Era (2014), Long Day's Journey into Night (2018), and Decision to Leave (2022).
Jo Yeong-wook is a South Korean film score composer and music director. He is most widely known for his collaborations with director Park Chan-wook.
Asian Film Award for Best Film has been awarded annually since 2007 by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society.

Jo Eun-ji is a South Korean actress. She debuted in the gritty Im Sang-soo film Tears, and has since become better known for her supporting roles on film and television, such as in The President's Last Bang, My Scary Girl, Forever the Moment, The Concubine and The Villainess. She was also the leading actress in the indies Driving with My Wife's Lover, and Sunshine Love.
The 7th Asian Film Awards took place on 18 March 2013. In the 14 award categories, 30 films with 70 nominees from across Asia were recognized for their excellence in cinema. The nominees were announced by actor Andy Lau who also served as president of the judging panel. The ceremony was held at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.
The Korean Association of Film Critics Awards (Korean: 한국영화평론가협회상), also known as the Critics Choice Awards, is an annual awards ceremony for excellence in film in South Korea. It was established in 1980 by the Korean Association of Film Critics (KAFC). The ceremony is usually held in November or December.
The 9th Asian Film Awards are the 2015 edition of the Asian Film Awards. The ceremony was held at the Venetian Theatre in The Venetian Casino and Hotel in Macau.
Byun Yo-han is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his roles in the television dramas Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014), Six Flying Dragons (2015–2016), and Mr. Sunshine (2018). He has also appeared in several independent films including Socialphobia (2015) and The Book of Fish (2021).
Kim Sang-bum is a South Korean film editor, and filmmaker, best known for his collaborations with director Park Chan-wook. Park has the longest-standing partnership is with Editor Kim Sang-bum. Their relationship dates back to when Park, then a college student, joined the directing department led by editor-in-chief Kim Sang-bum. It is worth noting that Editor Kim Sang-bum's late father, Editor Kim Hee-soo, was involved in Park Chan-wook's debut film, The Moon Is... the Sun's Dream as editor. Since the film Joint Security Area (1998), Editor Kim Sang-bum has edited all of Park Chan-wook's works, except for Stoker (2013), up until The Handmaiden.
Jo Woo-jin is a South Korean actor. He is known as an in-demand supporting or character actor on the big screen and TV series, such as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2017), Chicago Typewriter (2017), The Drug King (2018), Mr. Sunshine (2018), and Happiness (2021) He won Best Supporting Actor award at the 40th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2019 for his performance in the film Default.
Decision to Leave is a 2022 South Korean neo-noir romantic mystery film produced and directed by Park Chan-wook, who co-wrote the film with his frequent collaborator Chung Seo-kyeong. The film follows married detective Jang Hae-jun, whose investigation of a man's death leads him to the man's widow, Chinese immigrant Song Seo-rae. Hae-jun's investigation of Seo-rae as a suspect gradually leads him to develop feelings towards her.
The 15th Asian Film Awards was held on October 8, 2021, in Busan at Haeundae. Like 2020 edition it was staged with the 26th Busan International Film Festival in hybrid format that combines online and face-to-face participation. The award show was hosted by actress Kim Gyu-ri and broadcaster Lee Seung-guk.
Perhaps Love is a 2021 South Korean comedy-drama film, directed by Jo Eun-ji for Next Entertainment. Starring Ryu Seung-ryong, Oh Na-ra and Kim Hee-won, the film revolves around a best selling writer named Hyeon who has been in the slumps for 7 years. Then he meets an aspiring author Yoo-jin, who brings about change in his values.
Broker is a 2022 South Korean drama film written, directed and edited by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, and starring Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doona, Lee Ji-eun, and Lee Joo-young. The film revolves around characters associated with baby boxes, which allow infants to be dropped off anonymously to be cared for by others. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened on 26 May and won Ecumenical Jury Award and the Best Actor Award for Song Kang-ho. It was released on June 8, 2022, in theaters in South Korea.
The 16th Asian Film Awards was held on March 12, 2023 at Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium in Hong Kong Palace Museum. The nominations were announced on January 6, 2023. At the 16th edition of the awards ceremony, 30 films from 22 regions and countries were shortlisted for 81 nominations. South Korean film Decision to Leave received 10 nominations most for any film whereas Drive My Car with eight nominations was second.
