The 16th Asian Film Awards was held on March 12, 2023 at Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium in Hong Kong Palace Museum. The nominations were announced on January 6, 2023. [1] At the 16th edition of the awards ceremony, 30 films from 22 regions and countries were shortlisted for 81 nominations. [2] South Korean film Decision to Leave received 10 nominations most for any film whereas Drive My Car with eight nominations was second. [3]

Lin Min Chen, a Malaysian Chinese singer, actor and model was appointed as Youth Ambassador of the film awards. [4]

The award ceremony hosted by Grace Chan and Sammy Leung was held on 12 March 2023, where international actors and celebrities from Hong Kong walked the red carpet. Hiroshi Abe, Japanese model and actor, was presented with Excellence in Asian Cinema Award and 'Red Carpet Best Dressed Award', whereas AFA Next Generation Award was presented to Ji Chang-wook a South Korean actor and singer. [5] [6] Later, Sammo Hung, a martial arts veteran from Hong Kong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, [7] and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, a Hong Kong actor and singer, was presented with Asian Film Contribution Award for his contribution to the Asian cinema and the best actor award for his performance in Where the Wind Blows . Drive My Car by Ryusuke Hamaguchi won the best film award and best direction was awarded to Hirokazu Kore-eda for Broker , whereas Tang Wei's performance in Decision to Leave got her the best actress award. Events

Asian Film Awards Academy is holding an exhibition to celebrate 15 Years of excellence of Asian Film Awards from 5 to 11 March, 2023 at Harbour City’s Ocean Terminal Main Concourse. It is a pre-event leading to the film awards ceremony. Vivian Sung, a Taiwanese actress and Lin Min Chen, a Malaysian Chinese singer, actor and AFA Youth Ambassador are invited on 11 March to interact with fans. [11]

Japanese traditional martial arts dance group 'ORIENTARHYTHM' and talented pianist Niu Niu  [ zh ] performed on stage during the ceremony. [12]

Red Carpet Best Dressed Award

An award known as 'Best Dressed Award' is launched from this year ceremony. The award consists of a trophy designed by Hong Kong production and costume designer, William Chang and The Sail Melaka X iPANDAS Memorigin Tourbillon watch. [13] Hiroshi Abe became the first recipient of the award. [6]

Emergency Declaration is a 2021 South Korean medical action thriller film written and directed by Han Jae-rim. It starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Im Si-wan, Kim So-jin and Park Hae-joon. Filming restarted on September 12, 2020, after a postponement due to the COVID-19 resurgence in August 2020. The film was wrapped up on October 24, 2020.

Decision to Leave is a 2022 South Korean neo-noir romantic mystery film produced and directed by Park Chan-wook, who co-wrote the film with his frequent collaborator Chung Seo-kyeong. The film follows married detective Jang Hae-jun, whose investigation of a man's death leads him to the man's widow, Chinese immigrant Song Seo-rae. Hae-jun's investigation of Seo-rae as a suspect gradually leads him to develop feelings towards her.

Broker is a 2022 South Korean drama film written, directed and edited by Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, and starring Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doona, Lee Ji-eun, and Lee Joo-young. The film revolves around characters associated with baby boxes, which allow infants to be dropped off anonymously to be cared for by others. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened on 26 May and won Ecumenical Jury Award and the Best Actor Award for Song Kang-ho. It was released on June 8, 2022, in theaters in South Korea.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Park Ji-hwan</span> South Korean actor

Park Ji-hwan is a South Korean actor. He initially appeared in Yellow Hair (1999) and made his feature film debut in The City of Violence (2006). Since then, Park has performed in numerous movies and television dramas, including The Outlaws (2017), Untouchable (2017), and Black Dog (2019). Initially interested in a career in fashion design, Park changed track and decided to attend the Korean Academy of Film Arts. After working in many projects as a minor character, he has recently played more central roles, including that of a conflicted single father in Our Blues (2022).

The 43rd Blue Dragon Film Awards ceremony was held on November 25, 2022, at KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul. Organized by Sports Chosun. It aired live on KBS2. 18 categories were awarded at the 43rd edition of awards ceremony, hosted by Kim Hye-soo and Yoo Yeon-seok. The nominations for 15 categories were announced for the Korean films released from October 15, 2021 to October 30, 2022 on November 8, 2022, Decision to Leave got 13 nominations in 13 categories, and won 7 awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Music, and Popular Star Awards.

Jeong Seo-kyeong is a South Korean screenwriter. In 2002, she debuted as an independent film director and scriptwriter with the short film Electricians. She is best known for her works with critically acclaimed director Park Chan-wook, such as Lady Vengeance (2005), I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006), Thirst (2009), The Handmaiden (2016) and Decision to Leave (2022).
