The 2nd Asian Film Awards were given in a ceremony on 17 March 2008 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of the Hong Kong International Film Festival. The top winner was Secret Sunshine from South Korea, which won Best Film, Best Director for Lee Chang-dong and Best Actress for Jeon Do-yeon. Secret Sunshine had been nominated for four awards. The top nominees were Lust, Caution by Ang Lee and The Warlords by Peter Chan, both with six nominations each. Tony Leung Chiu Wai, star of Lust, Caution won Best Actor, while The Warlords won the award for best visual effects. [1] The Sun Also Rises by Jiang Wen had five nominations, and it won the prize for Best Supporting Actress, Joan Chen, who was also nominated for best actress for The Home Song Stories . [1] Japan's I Just Didn't Do It had four nominations. [3] [4]

For this year, the awards categories were expanded from 10 to 12 to include nominations for best supporting actor and best supporting actress. [3] The awards were sponsored by Mission Hills Golf Club.

Controversy

A reported Chinese media ban kept Lust, Caution lead actress Tang Wei from attending the ceremony. [5]

<i>Lust, Caution</i> 2007 film

Lust, Caution is a 2007 erotic period espionage romantic mystery film directed by Ang Lee, based on the 1979 novella by Eileen Chang. Lust, Caution is set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when the city was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and ruled by the puppet government led by Wang Jingwei. The film depicts a group of Chinese university students from The University of Hong Kong who plot to assassinate a high-ranking special agent and recruiter working for the puppet government by luring him into a honey trap. The film is generally accepted to be based on the historical event of Chinese spy Zheng Pingru's failed attempt to assassinate the Japanese collaborator Ding Mocun.

The 19th Busan International Film Festival was held in South Korea from October 2 to October 11, 2014, and was hosted by Ken Watanabe and Moon So-ri. A total of 312 films from 79 countries were screened with total attendance of 226,473. Hong Kong director Ann Hui receives the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award. The closing film was Gangster Payday.

The 9th Asian Film Awards are the 2015 edition of the Asian Film Awards. The ceremony was held at the Venetian Theatre in The Venetian Casino and Hotel in Macau.

The 16th Asian Film Awards was held on March 12, 2023 at Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium in Hong Kong Palace Museum. The nominations were announced on January 6, 2023. At the 16th edition of the awards ceremony, 30 films from 22 regions and countries were shortlisted for 81 nominations. South Korean film Decision to Leave received 10 nominations most for any film whereas Drive My Car with eight nominations was second.
