The Ireland cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates in January 2021 to play four One Day International (ODI) matches between 8 and 18 January 2021. [1] [2] The matches served as preparation for Ireland's World Cup Super League fixtures against Afghanistan in the UAE. [3] [4] [5]

In the first fixture, the UAE won by six wickets to record their first win against Ireland in an ODI match. [6] The second match of the series was originally scheduled to take place on 10 January 2021. [7] However, following a positive test for COVID-19 within the UAE team, [8] the match was rescheduled for 16 January 2021. [9] Two UAE cricketers had also tested positive ahead of the first ODI match. [10] On 11 January 2021, a fourth positive case was reported in the UAE squad. [11] [12] The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) issued a statement saying that the match scheduled to take place on 12 January 2021 had been suspended. [13] [14]

On 13 January 2021, the ECB issued a further statement saying that the third ODI, scheduled to be played the following day, had also been suspended. [15] No new COVID-19 cases had been reported, and the ECB and Cricket Ireland were continuing their discussions with regards to rescheduling the affected matches. [16] Despite no new cases, [17] the fourth match was suspended on 15 January 2021. [18] Both cricket boards were looking at the possibility of playing a match on 18 January 2021. [19] On 17 January 2021, it was confirmed that a second ODI match would be played the following day. [20] Ireland won the rescheduled ODI by 112 runs, therefore drawing the series 1–1. [21]

On 28 December 2020, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 19-man training squad in preparation for the series. [24] The ECB announced their squad for the series on 6 January 2021. [25] David Delany was ruled out of the series due to a knee injury, with Josh Little joining Ireland's squad. [26] Little was originally named in the team, but had to self-isolate after a positive COVID-19 result from a close contact. [27] On 11 January 2021, Shane Getkate was added to Ireland's squad, as a replacement for David Delany, [28] and Conor Olphert was added to their squad as a net bowler. [29]

Two UAE players, Chirag Suri and Aryan Lakra, tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the series, and were both ruled out of the first ODI match. [30] On 9 January 2021, Alishan Sharafu became the third UAE player to test positive for COVID-19, resulting in the second ODI match being rescheduled. [31]

The 2020–21 international cricket season took place from September 2020 to April 2021. 29 Tests, 49 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 50 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), 17 Women's One Day Internationals (WODIs) and 21 Women's Twenty20 Internationals (WT20Is) were scheduled to be played during this period. Additionally, a number of other T20I/WT20I matches were also scheduled to be played in minor series involving associate nations.

The 2021 international cricket season took place from May 2021 to September 2021. 13 Tests, 56 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 45 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) were scheduled to be held in this season. The final of the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship took place in June at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, England, with New Zealand beating India by eight wickets. All of the fixtures were played behind closed doors, at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, due to the pandemic. The teams last faced each other in a one-off ODI in Dublin in May 2019, with England winning by four wickets.

Karthik Palaniapan Meiyappan is an Emirati cricketer. In December 2019, he was named in the One Day International (ODI) squad for the 2019 United Arab Emirates Tri-Nation Series. He made his ODI debut for the UAE, against the United States on 8 December 2019. Later the same month, he was named in the UAE's squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In December 2020, he was one of ten cricketers to be awarded with a year-long part-time contract by the Emirates Cricket Board.

The England cricket team toured India during February and March 2021 to play four Test matches, three One Day International (ODI) and five Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The Tests formed part of the inaugural 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship, and the ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to cricket around the world, mirroring its impact across all sports. Around the world and to varying degrees, leagues and competitions have been cancelled or postponed.

The England cricket team toured South Africa during November and December 2020 to play three One Day International (ODI) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. However, the ODI matches were called off due to a COVID-19 outbreak. The ODI series would have formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

The Ireland cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates in January 2021 to play three One Day International (ODI) matches against Afghanistan. The ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. All of the matches were played at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Alishan Sharafu is an Emirati cricketer. He was named in the United Arab Emirates squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In their plate semi-final match against Nigeria, Sharafu scored an unbeaten 59 runs and was named the man of the match. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for the United Arab Emirates on 23 February 2020, against Iran, in the 2020 ACC Western Region T20 tournament.

Ansh Tandon is an Emirati cricketer. In February 2020, he was named in the UAE's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the 2020 ACC Western Region T20 qualifier tournament. He made his T20I debut for the UAE, against Saudi Arabia, on 25 February 2020. Prior to his T20I debut, he was named in the United Arab Emirates squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, and was named as one of the team's key players.

Muhammad Waseem is an Emirati cricketer who plays for the United Arab Emirates cricket team.

Akif Raja is an Emirati cricketer who plays for the United Arab Emirates cricket team. He played in one first-class match for Lahore Shalimar in January 2014 in the 2013–14 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in Pakistan.

The Ireland cricket team toured the West Indies in January 2022 to play three One Day International (ODI) matches and a one-off Twenty20 International (T20I) match. The ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. On 6 December 2021, the full schedule for the tour was confirmed by both cricket boards. Ireland last toured the West Indies in January 2020. Prior to the series, the Irish team were scheduled to play five white ball matches against the United States in Florida. However, the ODI matches were cancelled due to COVID-19 cases within the squads.
