Ivan Alfred Astley Thomas (born 25 September 1991) is an English professional cricketer who most recently played for Kent County Cricket Club. He is a right-arm medium-fast seam bowler who bats right-handed. He made his first-class cricket debut for Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities in March 2012 and has played in all forms of cricket for Kent.

Early life and youth career

Thomas was born in Greenwich and attended The John Roan School in Blackheath. [1] He played youth cricket for Blackheath Cricket Club and for Kent [2] before going to Leeds University to study Sports Science. [3] At university he was part of the Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities cricket team. A series of back injuries in his late teens, including a triple-stress fracture of his back, threatened Thomas' career. He has credited Pilates and other core strength exercises with helping to save his career. [4] [5] [6]

Cricket career

Thomas made his first-class cricket debut for Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities in March 2012 in a match against Surrey. [7] He played six first-class matches for the team between 2012 and 2014 as well as playing in MCC Universities competitions. [8]

Thomas made his Kent debut in May 2012 against Essex in the 2012 County Championship. [3] [4] He made a second appearance for Kent against the touring South Africans later in the season. [7] A variety of injury concerns limited his Kent appearances in 2013 and 2014, [9] [10] [11] but in 2015 he played more regularly for the side, making 11 first-class appearances as well as appearing in List A cricket and Twenty20 matches for the county and signing a contract extension in August. [7] [12] [13]

During the 2014–15 English winter Thomas played for Sunshine Coast Scorchers in Brisbane Grade Cricket in Queensland. [14] During the 2015–16 off-season he cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats, raising more than £4,000 for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. [15] [16]

During the 2018 season Thomas played regularly in the Kent side, especially in the County Championship where he played in 11 matches, taking 24 wickets at a bowling average of 26.25 runs per wicket. [17] [18] Against Middlesex in June he was part of a century partnership for the last Kent wicket with Grant Stewart, Thomas contributing just a single run in the 36 balls he faced. This was the first time a batsman had scored only one run as part of a century partnership in England and only the second time this had occurred in first-class cricket anywhere. [19] [20] [21]

Towards the end of the season he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in training and underwent surgery in September to reconstruct the ligament with the expectation that he would be unable to play cricket for six to nine months. [22] Despite his injury, Thomas was signed a new contract with the county during the 2018–19 off-season, although he did not play a match during the 2019 season. [17] [18] He appeared in Kent's Bob Willis Trophy side during the shortened 2020 season before leaving the club at the end of the season. [23]

Calum John Haggett is an English first-class cricketer who played for Kent County Cricket Club. An all-rounder, he bowls right-arm medium pace, and bats left-handed. He made his debut for Somerset in the 2010–11 Caribbean Twenty20 and played three T20 matches but these were the only appearances he made for Somerset. Having previously represented England U19s in their 2009 tour to Bangladesh, Haggett signed for Kent ahead of the 2013 English domestic season.

In 2015, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, Group B of the 50-over Royal London One-Day Cup and the South Group of the NatWest t20 Blast. The team reached the quarter-finals of both one day competitions but struggled in the County Championship, finishing seventh in Division Two.

In 2013, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, Group A of the 40-over Yorkshire Bank 40 and the South Group of the Friends Life t20. Kent also hosted a first-class match at the St Lawrence Ground against Cardiff MCCU at the start of the season and a T20 match against the touring New Zealanders in June. It was the second season in charge for head coach Jimmy Adams. The club captain was England spinner James Tredwell, taking over from Rob Key who had been club captain since 2006. Brendan Nash registered as a Kolpak player, ending his West Indies international career, which allowed Kent to sign another overseas player. South African fast bowler Vernon Philander filled this role, although he was only with the club for a short spell in July. Another new addition to the squad was 22-year-old Calum Haggett from Somerset. Shortly before the end of the season, Kent signed two young fast bowlers: Charlie Hartley and Matt Hunn. In addition, Mitchell Claydon joined on loan from Durham on 11 June initially for one month, but this was extended for a second month.

In 2016, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the NatWest t20 Blast. The season was the fifth, and last, in charge for head coach Jimmy Adams and the first for new club captain Sam Northeast, who took over from Robert Key at the end of the 2015 season, having captained the side on the field for much of the season.

Imran Qayyum is an English former professional cricketer who played for Kent County Cricket Club. A slow left arm bowler, he made his first-class cricket debut in May 2016 against Northamptonshire in the 2016 County Championship and has gone on to play in limited overs competitions for the county. In May 2021, he was forced to retire from the game due to a shoulder injury.

In 2017, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the NatWest t20 Blast. In addition, before the start of the English cricket season, Kent competed in the 2016–17 Regional Super50, the List A competition of the West Indian domestic season. This was the first time that any English county had competed in an overseas domestic competition. The invitation to take part in the tournament was largely due to the influence of former West Indian captain Jimmy Adams who had been Kent's Head Coach until September 2016.

In 2011, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, Group A of the 40-over Clydesdale Bank 40 and the South Group of the Friends Life t20. Kent also hosted a Twenty20 match at the St Lawrence Ground against the touring Indians, and a three-day first-class MCC Universities match against Loughborough MCCU, also at the St Lawrence Ground. It was the second and final season in charge for Director of Cricket Paul Farbrace. The club captain was former England batsman Rob Key who had been club captain since 2006. Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz joined Kent as their overseas player in June, and another fast bowler, South African Charl Langeveldt, signed as Kent's second overseas player for the Friends Life t20 competition only.

In 2017, Hampshire County Cricket Club will compete in Division One of the County Championship, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the NatWest t20 Blast.

Grant Stewart is an Italian-Australian professional cricketer who plays for Kent County Cricket Club. He made his first-class cricket debut for Kent in September 2017 in the club's final County Championship match of the season, having signed his first professional contract at the end of August.

In 2018, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the 2018 t20 Blast. The county finished second in Division Two of the Championship and were promoted to Division One for the 2019 season. They reached the final of the One-Day Cup. losing to Hampshire at Lord's, and the quarter-final stage of the t20 Blast. In addition, before the start of the English cricket season, Kent competed in the 2017–18 Regional Super50, the List A competition of the West Indies domestic season, reaching the semi-final stage. This was the second time that Kent have competed in the competition, having played in the 2016–17 competition.

Matthew Edward Milnes is an English professional cricketer who currently plays for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, having moved from Kent at the end of the 2022 season. Milnes was born in Nottingham and grew up in the city and attended West Bridgford School in the city before going to Durham University. A seam bowler, he was part of the Nottinghamshire Academy programme before making his first-class cricket debut in April 2014 for Durham MCC University against Derbyshire. He received a Half-Palatinate for his cricketing activities at university.

In 2019 Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division One of the County Championship after gaining promotion in the 2018 season, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the 2019 t20 Blast.

Toby Henry Somerville Pettman is an English first-class cricketer who plays for Nottinghamshire.

In 2020 Kent County Cricket Club were scheduled to compete in Division One of the County Championship, the Royal London One-Day Cup and the 2020 t20 Blast. However, the season was heavily disrupted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, with no county cricket fixtures played until August. For the shortened season, the majority of counties voted on 7 July to play first-class and Twenty20 cricket, with the Royal London One-Day Cup being cancelled. Instead of the County Championship this year, the 18 first-class counties competed for the 2020 Bob Willis Trophy, which consisted of three regional groups of six teams and a final at Lord's.

In 2021 Kent County Cricket Club competed in the 2021 County Championship, the 2021 One-Day Cup and the 2021 T20 Blast. The season was the fifth in charge for head coach, and former player, Matthew Walker. Sam Billings retained the club captaincy that he was first awarded in 2018. Daniel Bell-Drummond was named as vice-captain, replacing Joe Denly. Jack Leaning was named as captain for the One-Day Cup.
