Bruce or a "James Beace" may also have owned a significant number of slaves in the county's northern district. A similar handwritten name appears in the 1830 census, a few pages before the census entry which referred to this man as "Jr." but that earlier entry might refer to this man's father, as well as mentioned only 4 enslaved in that household.
