James Fanshawe is a British racehorse trainer. Based at Pegasus Stables in Newmarket, he has saddled 26 Group 1 winners. Although training horses mainly on the flat, he holds a dual licence and trained two winners of the Champion Hurdle.
Fanshawe was born into an equestrian family. His father Brian Fanshawe was an amateur jockey who won the 1967 National Hunt Chase on Master Tammy and his grandfather was the equestrian Richard Fanshawe. [1] Fanshawe was a boarder at Stowe School. Having worked for National Hunt trainers George Fairbairn and Josh Gifford as well as his aunt's husband David Nicholson, he moved to Newmarket and worked for flat trainer Michael Stoute. [2] [3]
Fanshawe took out his own licence in 1990 to train at Pegasus Stables, the yard that had been built by jockey Fred Archer. He saddled his first winner, Black Sapphire, at Salisbury in May 1990. [4] Later that year, he achieved his first Group race success when Radwell won the group 3 Solario Stakes. The following season Environment Friend won the Eclipse Stakes to provide him with his first Group 1 win. [5]
Holding a dual purpose licence to train horses on the flat and over jumps, Fanshawe sent out Royal Gait to win the Champion Hurdle at the 1992 Cheltenham Festival. Ten years later Hors La Loi III won the same race. [5]
In September 2000, Arctic Owl won the Irish St. Leger, providing Fanshawe with his only British or Irish Classic victory. The mare Soviet Song provided the yard with five Group 1 victories between 2002 and 2006. Fanshawe had his most successful year in terms of wins in 2002, with 58 wins at a strike rate of 22 per cent. His most successful year in terms of prize money was 2004. During the 2010s Society Rock, Seal of Approval, Ribbons, High Jinx and Speedy Boarding contributed to Fanshawe’s success at the highest level. Between 2015 and 2020, stable star The Tin Man (given Fred Archer’s nickname) won nine of his 31 starts, including three Group 1 wins. In 2020, Audarya won the Prix Jean Romanet and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. [5]
Fanshawe is married to Jacko, who takes an active part in running Pegasus stables. [2] The couple's son Tom rode The Tin Man at home. [6]

Johnny Murtagh is an Irish flat racing trainer and former jockey from Bohermeen, near Navan, Kells, County Meath. As a jockey he won many of the major flat races in Europe, including all the Irish Classics, all the Group 1 Races at Royal Ascot, The Derby, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Europe's biggest race the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He was also Irish flat racing Champion Jockey five times. As a trainer, based at stables near Kildare, he has saddled a winner at Royal Ascot and an Irish Classic winner.
Aidan Patrick O'Brien is an Irish horse racing trainer. Since 1996, he has been the private trainer at Ballydoyle Stables near Rosegreen in County Tipperary for John Magnier and his Coolmore Stud associates. He is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest horse racing trainers of all time.

The Prix Jean Romanet is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 2,000 metres at Deauville in August.
Soviet Song was a racehorse bred and owned by Elite Racing Club. She was foaled on 18 February 2000, sired by Marju (IRE) out of Kalinka (IRE). She raced in England, Ireland and France during her career and she was the highest rated older filly in the World in 2004 and 2005.
Ryan Lee Moore is an English flat racing jockey, who was Champion Jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He is currently the first choice jockey for Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle operation, a role in which he mainly rides horses owned by Coolmore Stud. He also sometimes rides horses for Juddmonte and The Royal Family. As of 2024, Moore has ridden over 200 Group and Grade 1 winners internationally. He has the most British Group & Listed wins of any active jockey.

Banks Hill was a French Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. She was bred and raced by Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms. She was sired by Danehill, a multiple Champion sire in England, Ireland, and France and the most successful sire in the history of Australian Thoroughbred racing. Her dam was the outstanding broodmare, Hasili, whose sire Kahyasi won the 1988 Irish and Epsom Derbys. Banks Hill is a full sister to Cacique, Intercontinental, Dansili and Champs Elysees.
Tom Queally is an Irish flat racing jockey based in Britain. He rode Frankel in his unbeaten 14-race career.
William Buick is a Norwegian-British flat jockey. He shared the champion apprentice jockey title in 2008 with David Probert and won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in 2007 and 2008. From 2010 to 2014 he was stable jockey to John Gosden. In 2015 he signed with Godolphin. Buick won his first Group1 race in Canada in 2010 and since then has won Group 1 races in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. He has won five British Classic Races: the St Leger in 2010, 2011 and 2021, the Derby in 2018 and the 2000 Guineas in 2024.
Royal Gait was a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won at the highest level in both Flat and National Hunt racing. Originally trained in Spain, where he won seven races, he was later moved to France where he became an outstanding performer over staying distances, winning the Prix du Cadran and Prix Royal Oak as a four-year-old in 1987. In the following year he won the Prix de Barbeville and the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier before being controversially disqualified after winning the Ascot Gold Cup. After a break of more than three years he was sent to the United Kingdom to compete in Hurdle races and won the 1992 Champion Hurdle. He collapsed and died after finishing fourth at Leopardstown Racecourse on 30 December 1992.
Frederik 'Freddy' Tylicki is a German-born former flat racing jockey in Great Britain. He was British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 2009, when he also won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year. His Polish-born father Andrzej Tylicki was three times champion jockey in Germany.
Roger Varian is a British Thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk.
Nicolai "Nico" W. Chastel de Boinville is an English horse racing jockey who competes in National Hunt racing. De Boinville has ridden more Grade One winners than any British jumps jockey currently active.
Andrea Atzeni is a professional Italian jockey who was based in England for sixteen years before moving to Hong Kong. He was born on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, where his father is a sheep farmer, and moved aged fifteen to Milan to work for Italian trainer Alduino Botti. Two years later he emigrated to England and joined the Prestige Place stables of Alduino's son Marco in Newmarket.
The Tin Man is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. A specialist sprinter, he did not race as a juvenile but showed promise as a three-year-old in 2015 when he won three minor races. He emerged as a top-class performer in the following year, taking the Leisure Stakes and the Hackwood Stakes before winning the Group 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes. He went on to win the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2017 before taking a second Leisure Stakes and the Haydock Sprint Cup in 2018. He failed to win in his last two seasons but did finish second in the 2019 Sprint Cup. The Tin Man retired from racing after sustaining a leg injury in 2021.
Speedy Boarding is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After finishing third on her only appearance as a juvenile in 2014 she won the Ballymacoll Stud Stakes in the following spring but was beaten in her other five starts and appeared to be a few pounds below the best fillies of her generation. She finally emerged as a top class racemare in 2016 when she recorded three major victories in France, taking the Prix Corrida, Prix Jean Romanet and Prix de l'Opéra. She was retired to become a broodmare at the end of the year.
Coronet is a British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she won both of her races including the Listed Zetland Stakes. In the following year her only win came in the Ribblesdale Stakes but she also finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks, third in the Prix Saint-Alary and the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and fourth in the Irish Oaks. As a four-year-old she won the Middleton Stakes and was placed in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Yorkshire Oaks, British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. She had her greatest success as a five-year-old when she recorded Group 1 victories in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Prix Jean Romanet.
Audarya is a French-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. After running second in her only start as a juvenile in 2018 she showed promising, but unremarkable form in the following year, winning two minor events and finishing second in a Listed race. As a young four-year-old in 2020 she was well beaten in her first two appearances but then made relentless progress, taking a minor handicap race in early August before moving up to Group 1 class to win the Prix Jean Romanet, finish third in the Prix de l'Opera and win the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Grand Glory is a British-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In her early career she was lightly-campaigned but showed good racing ability, winning her only race as a juvenile and finishing third in the Prix de Diane in 2019. As a four-year-old in 2020 she won the Listed Prix Zarkava and the Group 3 Prix de Flore. Grand Glory was even better as a five-year-old in 2021 when she took the Grand Prix de Vichy and the Prix Jean Romanet as well as running second in the Prix de l'Opera and fifth in the Japan Cup. In 2022 she won a second Prix Zarkava before taking the Prix Allez France and finishing third in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.
