Jan Johnston (born 13 October 1968, Salford, England [ citation needed ]) is an English professional singer & songwriter, best known for collaborating with some of the world's top trance music DJs and producers. [1]
In the early 1990s, she was signed to Columbia Records as part of the pop duo JJ (with fellow Mancunian Tony Kirkham), which gained some recognition while touring the UK with the #55 minor UK hit "If This Is Love", as well as "Slide Away". [2]
However, when the band project failed she continued as a solo artist, turning down the opportunity to sign to Deconstruction Records [3] and instead signing to A&M Records. In the mid 1990s, she came to the attention of trance producer BT when he purchased her single "Paris" (which included the song "The Prayer", whose choruses would become the vocal hooks for their most famous collaboration, "Anomaly (Calling Your Name)") from a bargain bin in Manchester. [4] Impressed by her vocals, he decided to collaborate with her recording the track "Remember" for the album ESCM .
Following this, Johnston was in demand to vocal for many other trance tracks, notably for Alan Bremmer and Anthony Pappa's "Freefall" project. Upon being given the instrumental, Jan came up with the lyrics resulting in "Skydive (I Feel Wonderful)" which, despite being a club anthem, never translated to a commercial hit, finally hitting the top 40 at No. 35 on its third release in 2001.
Paul Oakenfold signed her to his Perfecto Records label in 1999, with Jan initially recording three dance tracks with Jamie Myerson: "Religion"; "Flesh" (a track Johnston had previously written with BT that Perfecto planned to be the first single release by Johnson on Perfecto) and a re-recording of "Time", a demo previously recorded with Rob Davis retitled "Am I on Pause?", which Paul Oakenfold played on his 1999 tour.
None of these tracks were released and plans for the release of "Flesh" were shelved in favour of Jan recording Emerging, an album of acoustic pop (which could then be remixed for the clubs and Perfecto's audience) with Jamie Myerson. A cover of The Carpenters' song, "Superstar", was lined up to be the album's first single in 2000, with remixes produced by Todd Terry, Tiësto and Bill Hamel and a video filmed, but would ultimately go on to be unreleased.
Instead, Perfecto revisited "Flesh", releasing new remixes of this by Tiësto and Tilt rather than a track from the album, which reached No. 36 in the charts in March 2001. The original version of "Flesh", recorded in 1999, was not part of the release package and it was not until 2019 that it saw release. [5]
Following this, Perfecto returned to the Emerging album with remixes of one of the album tracks and planned singles, "As the Cracks Appear", emerging on a Perfecto 2001 summer promo release, though these went unreleased. Instead, Perfecto released the single "Silent Words", which reached No. 57 in the UK charts. [6] This would be the only track to be released from Emerging during this time, with the album delayed numerous times due to disagreements with Perfecto's then-parent label Mushroom UK due to its lack of dance tracks, and then later due to Mushroom's sale by NewsCorp and was ultimately unreleased following Mushroom UK's subsequent acquisition by Warner Music. Of the Emerging recordings and remixes, aside from "Silent Words", only a remix of "Superstar" and a remix of the album track "Unafraid", appearing on the soundtrack to the film Swordfish , were released. In 2002, Perfecto issued promo releases for new remixes of "Am I on Pause?", though these also went unreleased.
Following the cancellation of the Emerging project, Johnston continued to write and record with trance producers, contributing five tracks to Paul van Dyk's Grammy Award-nominated album, Reflections [7] amongst other projects, though once again the majority of them went unreleased.
In 2008, new solo tracks by Johnston began to emerge, with two of them being "Sleeping Satellite" and "Obsession", released digitally in 2009 by Perfecto; however, there have been no further solo releases since. She continues to provide guest vocals on a number of trance music tracks, most of which have been released. Notable tracks include "As It Should" with Tenishia in 2012 and "Skysearch" with DJ Feel in 2015.
In 2016, a previously unreleased album of Jan's entitled When Everything Was Possible that was recorded with Jamie Myerson in 1998 ahead of her signing to Perfecto was released on Jan's Bandcamp page, [8] and a few months later, Johnston's music as part of the duo JJ was digitally re-issued by Sony Music. A digital re-issued of Naked But for Lilies followed in April 2017 by Universal Music, along with the "Flesh" and "Silent Words" singles by Warner Music in August 2017.
In June 2017, Johnston released the song "Falling Away", the first song from The Travelling Vixen, a collection of previously unreleased material written and recorded with DJ Manolo following the Emerging project.
In 2018, Johnston signed to Solar Storm Records with new remixes of her singles "Calling Your Name" and "Flesh" released. [9]
In November 2019, it was announced that Johnston's Emerging album would be released by August Day Records, almost 20 years after its initial planned release date. The cancelled 2001 single "As the Cracks Appear" was released on 22 November on Solar Storm along with "Religion", with Emerging being released on 29 November with plans for the release of old singles "Superstar" and "Am I on Pause?" to follow. He has provided over 100 remixes for over 100 artists including U2, Moby, Madonna, Britney Spears, Massive Attack, the Cure, New Order, the Rolling Stones, the Stone Roses and Michael Jackson. Oakenfold was voted the No. 1 DJ in the World twice in 1998 and 1999 by DJ Magazine.
Nicholas Bracegirdle, known professionally as Chicane, is an English musician, DJ, composer, songwriter, and record producer. Among his works are singles "Offshore", an Ibiza trance anthem included in many compilations in both chill-out and dance versions; "Saltwater", which featured vocals by Clannad member Máire Brennan, and the UK number-one hit "Don't Give Up", featuring vocals by Bryan Adams, which also became a top ten hit on singles charts across Europe and Australia.

Simon Paul Berry, known by his alias Art of Trance, is an English trance music DJ. Berry is also known as Poltergeist or Vicious Circles, and has been a member of the trance groups Clanger, Conscious and Union Jack. He has been producing and remixing music since 1993. In addition to his work as an artist, Berry was the founder and head of Platipus Records, based in London. Initially his label only released his own tracks. His work was first distributed on vinyl and compact disc and then digital only from 2011.
Grace was a 1990s British dance music act, consisting of the DJs Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne and the jazz singer Dominique Atkins. The group's first single, "Not Over Yet", had lead and backing vocals by the original frontwoman Patti Low. Atkins recorded her own lead vocals for "Not Over Yet" when it was included as the first track on the group's only album If I Could Fly.
Melon: Remixes for Propaganda is a compilation of remixes released by Irish rock band U2 exclusively to members of the band's magazine/fan club, Propaganda, in spring 1995. Some of the remixes were previously available on singles and some have been re-released on later singles and compilations, while some remain exclusive to this set. The title "Melon" is an anagram of "Lemon," which is a reference to U2's song of the same name that appears on two tracks of the album.

Perfecto Records is a British trance record label, founded by Paul Oakenfold in 1989. Perfecto was also a remix team consisting of Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne and in its later years, Osborne was replaced by Andy Gray. Perfecto Records have provided remixes for U2, Moby, New Order, the Rolling Stones, Simply Red and more.
The Goa Mix is a two-hour DJ mix by British musician and DJ Paul Oakenfold. It was originally broadcast on BBC Radio 1 as an Essential Mix on 18 December 1994 after the producer of the show, Eddie Gordon, chose Oakenfold to produce an eclectic DJ mix for the show which featured a burgeoning variation of electronic styles, having begun the previous year. Oakenfold had, at this point, developed his own unique Goa trance sound, influenced by his time at hippy gatherings on beaches in Goa, and employed it heavily into the mix, which also made pioneering use of film score samples. Oakenfold used the mix as an experiment in which he tried to fuse electronic music, especially trance music, with film score music, and then to overlay the result with vocal parts, samples and additional production. The mix was split into two parts, later referred to as the Silver Mix and the Gold Mix respectively. Reflecting the Goa influence, the album title did not evolve beyond its simplistic working name.

Perfecto Presents: Another World is the twelfth DJ mix album by British electronic music producer Paul Oakenfold, released in 2000. It is the second instalment in his Perfecto Presents series, a series of DJ mix albums themed around Oakenfold's label Perfecto Records. The album employs Oakenfold's progressive trance sound and sees a return to the Goa trance sound he had helped popularise with Goa Mix (1994) and Perfecto Fluoro (1996). Similar to those albums, it also features a more eclectic array of music genres, featuring music from film soundtracks, the ethereal wave band Dead Can Dance and a remix of a Led Zeppelin song. Although the album received mixed reviews from critics, at the time of release, it became the biggest-selling DJ mix album in the United States, where it reached the Top 50 of the Top Electronic Albums chart.
Perfecto Fluoro is the fifth DJ mix album by British electronic producer and disc jockey Paul Oakenfold, released in 1996 on Oakenfold's label Perfecto Records, then a subsidiary of Warner Music UK who are also credited. Recorded eighteen months after the Oakenfold's ground breaking Goa Mix (1994), notable for its pioneering of goa trance and usage of film music, Perfecto Fluoro utilizes the same "epic" approach and feel, with liberal use of excerpts from film soundtracks, which is referred to in the album's liner notes track listing which lists not only track, artist and label, but also which film a song appears in, where relevant. There are also several excerpts of film dialogue sampled on some of the tracks; for instance, "Teleport" by Man With No Name contains some of Jeff Goldblum's dialogue extolling the virtues of teleportation from The Fly.

His eighteenth mix album, the album is a triple album containing popular electronic singles, mostly focused on the progressive house and progressive trance genres, that Oakenfold considers favourites, and the material on the album mostly draws from Oakenfold's label Perfecto Records. Mark Reeder is a British musician and record producer. He grew up in Manchester, England. At a young age, Reeder became interested in progressive rock and especially early electronic music. In his teens, he worked in a small Virgin Records store in Manchester city centre.
