Janet Lilly (born August 15,1957) is an American modern dancer and choreographer. [1] [2] She was a principal dancer for Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane's company from 1983 to 1991. [3] She currently serves as the Director of the UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts,School of Dance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. From 2012 to 2014 she was the president of the Board of Directors of Iyengar Yoga National United States Association. [4] [5]
Lilly grew up in Iowa City,Iowa and graduated from Iowa City West High School in 1975.
Lilly graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in dance. She was a principal dancer with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company from 1983 until 1991. [6] [7] [8] She also worked as a master teacher,rehearsal director,and choreographic assistant for the company. [9] She went on to attend the University of Michigan's School of Music,Theatre &Dance for her graduate degree,graduating summa cum laude in 1992. [10] Lilly taught at the Peck School of Art's Department of Dance at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee for fifteen years and served as the Dance Department Chair from 2005 to 2009. In 2011 she joined the faculty of the UNCG School of Music,Theatre and Dance at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,succeeding Jan Van Dyke as the Dance Department Chair. [11] [12] In 2016,the Department of Dance became the School of Dance with the creation of the UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts,with Lilly serving as Director of the School. Lilly also serves on the Commission on Accreditation of the National Association of Schools of Dance.
Lilly began studying Iyengar Yoga in 1992 while a student in graduate school,where she studied with Laurie Blakeney at the Ann Arbor School of Yoga in Michigan. She has been teaching since 1995. She has studied at the Iyengar Institute in Pune,India under B. K. S. Iyengar seven times. [14] She was granted a four-month residency at the University of Pune. From 2012 to 2014 she was the president of the Iyengar National United States Association. [15] [16] She teaches yoga at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and at Triad Yoga in Greensboro. [17]

Iyengar was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya,who is often referred to as "the father of modern yoga". He has been credited with popularizing yoga,first in India and then around the world.
William Tass Jones,known as Bill T. Jones,is an American choreographer,director,author and dancer. He is the co-founder of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. The company's home in Manhattan. Jones is Artistic Director of New York Live Arts,whose activities encompass an annual presenting season together with allied education programming and services for artists. Independently of New York Live Arts and his dance company,Jones has choreographed for major performing arts ensembles,contributed to Broadway and other theatrical productions,and collaborated on projects with a range of fellow artists. Jones has been called "one of the most notable,recognized modern-dance choreographers and directors of our time."
Bakasana,and the similar Kakasana are balancing asanas in hatha yoga and modern yoga as exercise. In all variations,these are arm balancing poses in which hands are planted on the floor,shins rest upon upper arms,and feet lift up. The poses are often confused,but traditionally Kakasana has arms bent,Bakasana has the arms straight.

Light on Yoga:Yoga Dipika is a 1966 book on the Iyengar Yoga style of modern yoga as exercise by B. K. S. Iyengar,first published in English. It describes more than 200 yoga postures or asanas,and is illustrated with some 600 monochrome photographs of Iyengar demonstrating these.
Justin Tornow is an American dancer,choreographer,dance scholar,and dance teacher. She is the founder and artistic director of COMPANY,a co-founder and co-organizer of Durham Independent Dance Artists,former board president of the North Carolina Dance Alliance,and producer of the PROMPTS art series in Durham,North Carolina. Tornow is trained in Cunningham technique and is a New York Public Library Research Fellow in Cunningham dance pedagogy. Maryhelen Mayfield is an American ballet dancer,choreographer,and artistic director. She was a dancer with Kansas City Ballet before moving to North Carolina to serve as both artistic and executive director of Greensboro Ballet. She served as the director of the ballet from 1980 until 2019,choreographing and staging over twenty-five original works.
