The name jangjeon literally means "long arrows." It is believed that the original inhabitants of the Jangjeon village were arrowsmiths, making long arrow shafts from the bamboo groves that still flourish on the slopes of Geumjeongsan.

The Hoedong Reservoir is located on the district's eastern boundary, and the mountain Geumjeongsan on the west. Because of this, 75% of the district's land is restricted from residential development. The district's population is concentrated in the valley of the Oncheoncheon stream, a tributary of the Suyeonggang.

The metro network first opened in 1985 with seventeen stations, making Busan the second city in South Korea and third in the Korean Peninsula to have a metro system. The Metro itself consists of 4 numbered lines, covering 116.5 kilometres (72.4 mi) of route and serving 114 stations. The northernmost point in Geumseong-dong is at Godang-bong, the highest peak in Geumjeongsan.
