John Nathan "Janno" Lieber (born September 19,1961) [1] is the head of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York. He was appointed acting chair and CEO in July 2021 and confirmed permanently in January 2022.
Lieber was born on September 19,1961,to Charles and Mimi Levin Lieber.[ citation needed ] Charles was a president of the Hebrew Publishing Company and Mimi was a member of the New York State Board of Regents. [2] [3]
In the 1980s,Lieber was a journalist at The New Republic . [4]
He worked as a transportation policy advisor during New York City Mayor Ed Koch's administration. [4] Later Lieber served as an acting assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Transportation during the Clinton administration. [4]
In 2003,he joined Silverstein Properties,where he would later become the president of their World Trade Center Properties division,working on the rebuilding after the September 11 attacks. [5] [6] In a 2015 interview with The New York Times ,he described himself as "a jack-of-all-trades," saying,"I do everything from financing to the legal to the design and construction to the P.R. and government relations."
In 2017,then-governor Andrew Cuomo appointed Lieber to be the MTA's chief development officer. [4] In this role of chief development officer,Lieber oversaw a range of capital initiatives including the long-delayed completion of the extension of the Second Avenue Subway line on the East Side of Manhattan. In July 2021,Cuomo nominated Lieber to serve as acting chair and CEO,following the retirement of Pat Foye. [4] In November 2021,governor Kathy Hochul said she wanted to nominate him for those roles permanently. [5] He was formally nominated by Hochul and subsequently confirmed by the New York State Senate in January 2022. [8] [9]
On January 25,2023,Lieber rode with Hochul on the first train to the new Grand Central Madison station,part of the East Side Access project. [10]
In early 2024,there were two train derailments in the subway system. [11] Investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board have begun into the entire MTA system as a result. [12]
Pennsylvania Station is the main intercity railroad station in New York City and the busiest transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere,serving more than 600,000 passengers per weekday as of 2019. The station is located beneath Madison Square Garden in the block bounded by Seventh and Eighth Avenues and 31st and 33rd Streets and in the James A. East Side Access (ESA) is a public works project in New York City that extended the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) two miles from its Main Line in Queens to the new Grand Central Madison station under Grand Central Terminal on Manhattan's East Side. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) project was originally scheduled to open in 2009 but was delayed by more than a decade. The new station and tunnels opened with limited service to Jamaica station in Queens on January 25,2023,and full service began on February 27,2023. The estimated cost of the project rose over threefold from US$3.5 billion to US$11.1 billion as of April 2018,making it one of the world's most expensive underground rail-construction projects.
Mets–Willets Point is a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington Branch in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park,Queens,New York City. Prior to 2021,the station would normally be open only during New York Mets home games,the U.S. Open tennis tournament,major events,and emergencies. The station has been served full-time since 2023.
The Bay Ridge Branch is a rail line owned by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and operated by the New York and Atlantic Railway in New York City. It is the longest freight-only line of the LIRR,connecting the Montauk Branch and CSX Transportation's Fremont Secondary at Glendale,Queens with the Upper New York Bay at Bay Ridge,Brooklyn.
In New York City,a planned congestion pricing scheme will charge vehicles traveling into or within the central business district of Manhattan. First proposed in 2007,this disincentivizing fee to cut down on traffic congestion and pollution was approved and included in the 2019 New York state government budget by the New York State Legislature. As of February 2023,congestion pricing is scheduled to be implemented in the second quarter of 2024. When the congestion charge goes into effect,tolls will be collected electronically and will vary depending on the time of day,type of vehicle,and whether a vehicle has an E-ZPass toll transponder.

He was the Republican nominee in an unsuccessful bid for the 2013 election for Mayor of New York City. In January 2014,he became senior vice president,vice dean,and chief of staff at NYU Langone Medical Center. In 2017,he returned to the chairmanship of the MTA,but would not run the authority day-to-day. He resigned from that position in 2018.

The LaGuardia Link Q70 Select Bus Service bus route is a public transit line in Queens,New York City,running primarily along the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. AirTrain LaGuardia was a proposed 1.5-mile-long (2.4 km) people mover system and elevated railway in New York City,United States,that would provide service to LaGuardia Airport in Queens. It would have connected with the New York City Subway and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in Willets Point,similar to how the existing AirTrain JFK system connects John F. Kennedy International Airport’s six terminals to the LIRR in southern Queens at Jamaica station and to the subway at both Sutphin Boulevard–Archer Avenue–JFK Airport station and Howard Beach-JFK Airport station;and how the existing AirTrain Newark station connects Newark Liberty International Airport’s three terminals to NJ Transit Rail Operations and Amtrak at a dedicated station.

In 2017,New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) due to ongoing reliability and crowding problems with mass transit in New York City. This order applied particularly to the New York City Subway,which was the most severely affected by dilapidated infrastructure,causing overcrowding and delays. With many parts of the system approaching or exceeding 100 years of age,general deterioration could be seen in many subway stations. By 2017,only 65% of weekday trains reached their destinations on time,the lowest rate since a transit crisis in the 1970s. To a lesser extent,New York City buses operated by the MTA were also affected. Both the subway and the buses are run by the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA),a subsidiary of the MTA. A separate crisis at Penn Station affected the routes of the three railroad agencies that provided service into the station. Media outlets deemed these crises "the summer of hell".
Grand Central Madison is a commuter rail terminal for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the Midtown East neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Part of the East Side Access project,the new terminal started construction in 2008 and opened on January 25,2023. The station sits beneath Grand Central Terminal,which serves the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)'s Metro-North Railroad.

The Interborough Express (IBX) is a proposed 14-mile (22.5 km) 24/7 light rail line in New York City. As proposed,the line would operate on its own separate tracks within the existing right-of-way from the Bay Ridge Branch and Fremont Secondary to connect Bay Ridge,Brooklyn and Jackson Heights,Queens. Near the All Faiths Cemetery in Queens,IBX would operate on the street. As of 2023 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) estimated that the project would be operational in 2027.
On January 4,2024,a New York City Subway train derailed causing at least 26 people,mostly passengers,to suffer minor injuries. The incident happened when the first car of a 1 train collided with a disabled train that had been vandalized,both consisting of R62As,just north of the 96th Street station. Around 300 people were evacuated off the train involved in the collision.
