Jarvisburg is an unincorporated community in rural Currituck County, North Carolina. A post office was established around 1890. [1]
There is a post office, elementary school, cafe, Jarvisburg Church of Christ, and Sanctuary Vineyard winery.
A two room schoolhouse for "colored" students in the district was enlarged and remodeled in 1911, adding a second-story and central bell tower, [2] the Jarvisburg Colored School is now a museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Corinth Baptist Church is also located in the area. [3]
A 1929 building, once a working cotton gin, [4] was destroyed by fire in 2019. At that time the building contained a well-known gift shop called "The Cotton Gin". [5] [6]
In 2022 a resident of Jarvisburg won $2 million dollars on a scratch-off game administered by the North Carolina Education Lottery. [7]
Currituck County is the northeasternmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,100. Its county seat is Currituck. The county was formed in 1668 as a precinct of Albemarle County and later gained county status in 1739. The name is "traditionally said to be an indigenous word for wild geese; Coratank." Currituck County is included in the Virginia Beach-Chesapeake, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area. It is in the northeastern section of the state and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Currituck Sound, Camden County, Dare County and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currituck Court House, mentioned as early as 1755, was the name of the county seat. Today the words "Court House" have been dropped and only Currituck is used as the community name.
Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is a public historically Black university in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It enrolls nearly 2,500 students in 28 undergraduate programs and 4 graduate programs and is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the University of North Carolina system.
Corolla is an unincorporated community located in Poplar Branch township, Currituck County, North Carolina, United States, along the northern Outer Banks. It has a permanent population of approximately 500 people; during the summer vacation season, the population surges into the thousands. Corolla is home to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, one of the seven North Carolina coastal lighthouses.
Duck is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 746. During the peak vacation season, starting after Memorial Day, the population increases to over 20,000. Duck is the northernmost incorporated town in Dare County and the Outer Banks' newest town, incorporated on May 1, 2002. Duck offers visitors outdoor recreational activities, summer events and concerts, watersports, fine dining, shopping, art galleries, and a nationally known jazz festival, as well as the 11-acre (4.5 ha) Town Park and soundside boardwalk.
Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States, which was originally settled by the Moravian community in 1766. It features a living-history museum which interprets the restored Moravian community. The non-profit organization began its work in 1950, although some private residents had restored buildings earlier. As the Old Salem Historic District, it was declared a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1966, and expanded fifty years later. The district showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in the Province of North Carolina during the colonial 18th century and post-statehood 19th century via its communal buildings, churches, houses and shops.
The Outer Banks are a 200 mi (320 km) string of barrier islands and spits off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, on the east coast of the United States. They line most of the North Carolina coastline, separating Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. A major tourist destination, the Outer Banks are known for their wide expanse of open beachfront and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Knotts Island is a marshy island and a small unincorporated community. The island is shared by Currituck County, North Carolina and Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States, bounded by the Currituck Sound, North Landing River, Back Bay, and Knotts Island Bay. Knotts Island is home to Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge. Knotts Island is accessible overland from Virginia Beach using Princess Anne Road, or by water from the Currituck County mainland; the North Carolina Department of Transportation operates a free ferry between Knotts Island and Currituck on the mainland. Carova Beach or Carova is an unincorporated community in Currituck County in the extreme northeastern corner of North Carolina, United States. The community, begun in the 1960s, is found on Currituck Banks, north of Bodie Island, and can be accessed only by boat or by four-wheel drive vehicle. There are no paved roads connecting Carova to the town of Corolla, North Carolina. The neighboring settlement of Sandbridge in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is not accessible by vehicle from Carova. In the 1960s, when development began in Carova, there were plans to construct a paved road from Sandbridge south to Carova through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, but these never materialized. Today, there is a permanent fence from ocean to sound to keep vehicles from crossing and, more importantly, to keep the wild horses from migrating to the Virginia side of the border. To reach Carova, four-wheel drive vehicles must drive north along the beach from Corolla into the community, as access from Virginia is limited to pedestrians and bicyclists.
Edenton Historic District is a national historic district located at Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 342 contributing buildings, 4 contributing sites, and 3 contributing structures. It includes several buildings that are individually listed on the National Register. The Lane House, possibly the oldest surviving house in North Carolina, is owned by Steve and Linda Lane and is located within the district. Also located in the district are the Dixon-Powell House, William Leary House, and Louis Ziegler House designed by architect George Franklin Barber.
Monkey Island is a remote, natural island located in Currituck Sound, North Carolina and is part of the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. Contrary to its name, there are no monkeys on Monkey Island. It is named for the Pamunkey nation that once inhabited the area, and used the island for summer hunting.
The Mid-Currituck Bridge is a proposed 7-mile (11 km) long two-lane toll bridge that will span across Currituck Sound, connecting US 158 and NC 12. Its purpose is to alleviate summer traffic congestion and to improve both emergency response and evacuation time. Long a topic of study and debate, the bridge could be built in the 2020s.
The Midway Plantation House and Outbuildings are a set of historic buildings constructed in the mid-19th century in present-day Knightdale, Wake County, North Carolina, as part of a forced-labor farm.
Grandy School is a historic school building located at Grandy, Currituck County, North Carolina. It was built in 1908, and is a tall, one-story, frame building with Late Victorian and Colonial Revival style design elements. It has a gable roof and features a tall central bell tower.
Jarvisburg Colored School is a historic school building for African-American students located at Jarvisburg, Currituck County, North Carolina. First built as a one-room school in 1868 on land donated by Mr. William Hunt Sr, an educated African American farmer in Currituck, His gift of land included property for a church. Replaced in the 1890s with a two-room building and again expanded in 1911 to its current size. It was in service from 1868 until 1950 when Currituck opened a Consolidated School and closed all the small African American county schools. The Jarvisburg Colored School is a two-story, frame building built of cypress wood with Queen Anne style design elements. It has a gable roof and features a pyramidal roofed bell tower with the original four foot wooden spire. It last housed a school in 1950. Today, the Jarvisburg Colored School serves as a Museum to share the stories of former students and histories of all the Colored Schools in Currituck County, North Carolina.
Coinjock Colored School is a historic Rosenwald school building for African-American students located at Coinjock, Currituck County, North Carolina. It was built in 1920, and is a one-story frame, side-gable-roof, two-classroom school building with American Craftsman style design elements. The school was one of three Rosenwald schools built in Currituck County. It housed a school until 1950.
Beatty-Corbett House is a historic plantation house located near Ivanhoe, in Sampson County, Pender County, and Bladen County. The plantation is located at the tripoint of Sampson, Pender, and Bladen counties, with the house itself being located in Pender County. A two-story, side-hall Greek Revival style block was built about 1850, with a two-story, five-bay, double pile Classical Revival house added about 1900, and a two-room ell added about 1920. The central bay of the c. 1900 section features a two-story portico. Also on the property are the contributing round-notched log stable, smokehouse, tool shed, washhouse, a sulfur spring, tobacco barn, several sections of ornate cast iron fence, the site of a former turpentine still, the site of a former riverboat landing, and the site of a former cotton gin.

Notable contributing resources include the Marvin Johnson House, Federal Herring House (1830s), the Colonial Revival style A. J. Johnson House (1909), Clear Run Grocery, furniture store, cotton gin, and the remains of the steamer A. J. Johnson.

It encompasses 152 contributing buildings, 20 contributing sites, and 2 contributing structures in the central business district of Wilson. Located in the district are the separately listed Branch Banking Building, Cherry Hotel, and Wilson County Courthouse. Robert Otho Hanig is an American politician who is a member of the North Carolina Senate, representing District 3. He was appointed by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to serve the remainder of Senator Bob Steinburg's term representing District 1 following Sen. Steinburg's resignation to seek the Republican nomination in Senate District 2. Hanig was first elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives after defeating incumbent Beverly Boswell in the primary election for House District 6 Hanig is an Army veteran and owns The Pool Guy Aquatic Services.
