Javaid Rahi is an Indian author,researcher and Tribal social worker . [4] [5] [6] He has been working to protect the ethno-culture heritage of the indigenous Gujjar-Bakerwal tribe in northwest India. He is a writer and poet of Gojri, Punjabi and Urdu languages. [7] [8] As an author , he has written two dozen books and edited over 300 books and issues of magazines in different languages especially in the field of tribal literature, history, and culture of pastoralists including Gujjars , Bakarwals, Shina-Dard , Sippis, and Gaddis— and other Scheduled Tribes groups of India. Early life

He was born to Gujari and Punjabi poet Babu Noor Mohammad Noor in the village of Chandak in the district Poonch, close to the Actual Line of Control on the Indo-Pak border in Jammu & Kashmir.He completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) from the University of Jammu in 2004. He conducted study on the six "tribal languages" of Jammu and Kashmir including Gujari , Shina, Gaddi, Balti, Purgi and Ladakhi also known as Boti. [11] [12]

Social work and reforms

Javaid Rahi started tribal social activism in 1994 through awareness among Tribal and marginalized communities. [13]

Through tribal conferences, seminars, and public gatherings, he worked to press for adoption of a national model in J&K, aiming to empower the ST communities previously deprived of constitutional rights under the state's special status pre-2019. [14] [15] [16] [17] In 2019, in result of a long struggle, the nationwide laws including Political Reservation for STs, Forest Rights Act 2006 , SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989 , Conservation Act 1982 and many other Acts are implemented in J&K "Jammu and Kashmir Re-organisation Act, 2019," that empower Scheduled Tribes J&K. [18] [19] [20]

From 2019 he travelled tribal areas of J&K to aware tribal communities about new laws extended.With his awareness programmes thousands of Forest Dwellers tribal families are now enjoying rights under Forest Rights Act of 2006. Besides Scheduled Tribes (ST) of J&K are now entitled to contest on reserved (ST) seats in Assemblies, urban and rural-level institutions . These changes has to pull tribal communities out of marginalization and social exclusion. [21] [22] [23] [24]

Tribal research and literary work

His research studies on tribal communities, published in the form of the book series including ' the Gujjars' in six volume , 'Encyclopedia of Himalayan Gujjars, 'Folk-lore Dictionary of Gujjar Tribe' 'Folk-Songs of Gujjars Bakarwals' and 'Gujjar Shanakhat ka Safar'.These projects were carried out for institutions such as Gurjardesh Charitable Trust, Jammu, and the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation. [25]

Javaid Rahi also served as a member of Curriculum Committees for Master's Degree in Gojri run by University of Jammu and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri and University of Jammu .Gujjar and Bakarwal . Hè also complied a series of textbooks in Gojri for schools from 1st primary to 12th class, for the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education. [26]

Javaid Rahi served in various cultural organizations and Research institutions. Presently , he is serving as Secretary , Kala Kendra , Jammu an autonomous body established in 2005 with the assistance of Ministry of Culture , Government of India to promote Visual Arts, Theatre , Music and Literature. He also served as the news editor/ reader at All India Radio in Jammu and Srinagar until 2000 and as the chief editor of Gojri at the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages since 2000 has been marked by his dedication to preserving and promoting the Gojri language and culture. Under his supervision, the first-ever Gujari dictionary was compiled, containing a vast repository of approximately 70,000 words, further enhancing the linguistic heritage of the tribal communities. [27]

Awards and recognition

The government of Jammu and Kashmir awarded Javaid Rahi with the State Level "Tribal Award 2022" presented to him by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha for his outstanding work in the field of tribal research and social reforms. [32] He was also awarded on first 'National Tribal Pride day' on 15th Nov 2021,by Tribal Affairs Department, J&K Govt. [33]

Gujari is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by most of the Gujjars in the northern parts of India and Pakistan as well as in Afghanistan. It is a member of the Rajasthani group of languages.

The Gurjar are an Indo-Aryan agricultural ethnic community, residing mainly in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, divided internally into various clan groups. They were traditionally involved in agriculture, pastoral and nomadic activities and formed a large heterogeneous group. The historical role of Gurjars has been quite diverse in society: at one end they have been founders of several kingdoms and dynasties and, at the other end, some are still nomads with no land of their own.

Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, is a community-supported nonprofit organization set up in 2000 with the objective to project tribal issues before authorities and to promote ethno- Cultural aspects of tribes. The Foundation was established to work on Gujjars studies and nomadic research in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages is a society registered with the government of Jammu and Kashmir as a cultural organization for the promotion of regional languages, arts, and culture in Jammu and Kashmir.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Masud Choudhary</span> Indian police officer (1944–2022)

Masud Choudhary was an Indian educator, social reformer, thinker and an administrator of Jammu and Kashmir union territory. He was the founding Vice Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri, J&K. He was also the Chief Patron of the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust. Choudhary served in the police and retired as the Additional Director of the General Police (IPS) in 2004.

Raja Nain Singh Nagar also known as Raja Nain Singh Gurjar of Parichhatgarh was a Gurjar king in Bahsuma town of Meerut district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh during the 18th century. He was one of the notable Gurjar Kings of that time, other being Raja Ram Dayal Singh Gurjar of Landhaura, and Rao Ajit Singh Gurjar of Dadri and many more.

Doi is a clan of the Gurjar ethnic group of Pakistan and India.

Dr. Rafique Anjum ڈاکٹر رفیق انجم, a paediatrician by profession, is also a poet, Islamic scholar, and researcher of Jammu and Kashmir who writes in Urdu, Punjabi, and Gojri. He is presently working as Chair Professor in Tribal Studies at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri (J&K) and the Coordinator, Centre for Research in Gojri, Pahari & Kashmiri of the said University. He is the recipient of the state-level award for Excellence in Literature in 2007, and is a member of the General Council of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. He has served as Registrar and Consultant Pediatrician in GMC Srinagar and Consultant Paediatrician in JK Health Services.

Mohammad Aslam Kohli is a political leader from the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. He is the head of the Gujjar and Bakerwal Tehreek-e-Insaf, an organization representing Gujjar and Bakarwal interests, such as ensuring continuation of statewide job reservations for Gujjars under the Scheduled Tribe list and participating in the Gujjar movement to be listed as a Scheduled Tribe at the national level. He is also a leader of the Jammu Migrants Front, an organization engaged in advocacy for internal migrants from the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir state.

Rana is a clan the Gurjar ethnicity. It is predominantly found among the Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Hakla, some time misspelled as Haklla or Akla is a clan originally affiliated with the Gurjar community of south Asia. They are mostly found among the Hindu and Muslim Gujjars.

Chapa or Chap is a clan of the Gurjar ethnic community of northern India.

The Pahari people or Pahari-speaking people is a cover term for a number of heterogeneous communities inhabiting in Jammu and Kashmir and also some parts of Pakistan administered Azad Kashmir who speak Pahari languages/dialects.

Bhadana is a clan of the Indian and Pakistani Gurjars. They are said to have once ruled the Bhadanaka kingdom of north India from early 11th century to 12th century.

Charr, or Char is clan originally found among the Gurjars of India and Pakistan.
