Javaid Rahi is an Indian author, researcher and tribal social worker. [4] [5] [6] He is a writer and poet of Gojri, Punjabi and Urdu languages. [7] [8] He has written 25 books and edited over 300 books and issues of magazines in different languages especially in the field of tribal literature, history, and culture of pastoralists including Gujjars, Bakarwals, Shina-Dard, Sippis, and Gaddis— and other Scheduled Tribes groups of India. Rahi completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) from the University of Jammu in 2004. He conducted study on the six "tribal languages" of Jammu and Kashmir including Gujari, Shina, Gaddi, Balti, Purgi and Ladakhi also known as Boti. [11] [12]
Javaid Rahi started tribal social activism in 1994 through awareness among Tribal and marginalized communities about constitutional rights and guaranties grant to them as Scheduled Tribe . [13]
Through tribal conferences, seminars, and public gatherings, he worked to press for adoption of a national model in J&K, aiming to empower the ST communities previously deprived of constitutional rights under the state's special status pre-2019. [14] [15] [16] [17] In 2019, in result of a long struggle, the nationwide laws including Political Reservation for STs, Forest Rights Act 2006, SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989, Conservation Act 1982 and many other Acts are implemented in J&K "Jammu and Kashmir Re-organisation Act, 2019," that empower Scheduled Tribes J&K. From 2019 he travelled tribal areas of J&K to inform tribal communities about new laws extended.With his awareness programmes thousands of Forest Dwellers tribal families are now enjoying rights under Forest Rights Act of 2006. [21] [22] [23] [24]
His research studies on tribal communities were carried out for institutions such as Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Tribal Research Institute-J&K, Department of Tribal Affairs, J&K besides community organizations including Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Jammu and Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation. Javaid Rahi also served as a member of Curriculum Committees for master's degree in Gojri run by University of Jammu and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri and University of Jammu. He also complied a series of textbooks in Gojri for schools from 1st primary to 12th class, for the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education. [26]
Under his supervision, the first-ever Gujari dictionary was compiled, containing a vast repository of approximately 70,000 words, further enhancing the linguistic heritage of the tribal communities. [27]
Rahi has authored a number of reference books in Gujari, Urdu, English, and other languages, published by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation. [28] [29]
The government of Jammu and Kashmir awarded Javaid Rahi with the State Level "Tribal Award 2022" presented to him by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha for his outstanding work in the field of tribal research and social reforms. [35] He was also awarded on first 'National Tribal Pride day' on 15th Nov 2021, by Tribal Affairs Department, J&K Govt. [36]
Laur, Lava, Lavi or Lor is a major clan of the Gurjar ethnic community of northern India.
The Bakarwal, are a nomadic ethnic group who along with Gujjars, have been listed as Scheduled Tribes in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh since 1991. Bakerwal and Gujjar is the largest Muslim tribe and the third-largest ethnic community in the Indian part of Jammu and Kashmir.
Gujari is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by most of the Gujjars in the northern parts of India and Pakistan as well as in Afghanistan. It is a member of the Rajasthani group of languages.
The Gurjar are an agricultural ethnic community, residing mainly in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, divided internally into various clan groups. They were traditionally involved in agriculture, pastoral and nomadic activities and formed a large heterogeneous group. The historical role of Gurjars has been quite diverse in society: at one end they have been founders of several kingdoms and dynasties and, at the other end, some are still nomads with no land of their own.
Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, is a community-supported nonprofit organization set up in 2000 with the objective to project tribal issues before authorities and to promote ethno- Cultural aspects of tribes. The Foundation was established to work on Gujjars studies and nomadic research in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages is a society registered with the government of Jammu and Kashmir as a cultural organization for the promotion of regional languages, arts, and culture in Jammu and Kashmir.
Masud Choudhary was an Indian educator, social reformer, thinker and an administrator of Jammu and Kashmir union territory. He was the founding Vice Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri, J&K. He was also the Chief Patron of the Muslim Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust. Choudhary served in the police and retired as the Additional Director of the General Police (IPS) in 2004.
Mohammad Yousuf Taing, also known as M. Y. Taing, is a researcher, scholar, critic, writer, politician and historian. He is also biographer of Sheikh Abdullah. He is a prolific literary thinker writing in three Indian languages.

He is presently working as Chair Professor in Tribal Studies at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri (J&K) and the Coordinator, Centre for Research in Gojri, Pahari & Kashmiri of the said University. He is the recipient of the state-level award for Excellence in Literature in 2007 and is a member of the General Council of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. He has served as Registrar and Consultant Pediatrician in GMC Srinagar and Consultant Paediatrician in JK Health Services.
Hakla, some time misspelled as Haklla or Akla is a clan originally affiliated with the Gurjar community of south Asia. They are mostly found among the Hindu and Muslim Gujjars.
Lala Mulk Raj Saraf was an Indian journalist and writer, with over seventy years of a distinguished career in journalism and social service. With several firsts to his name, he is most renowned for overcoming all odds to lay the foundation of journalism in J&K, setting up the first printing press, and publishing the region's first newspaper, Ranbir. For his pioneering efforts in enabling a free press in J&K, he is known as the "Father of Journalism in Jammu and Kashmir". A freedom fighter, social reformer, and much loved public figure, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976. Saraf established the JDGD Saraf Trust for promoting conscientious journalism in 1985. The Trust has emerged as a highly prestigious institution in the realm of journalism. It has played a crucial role in encouraging the growth of a healthy press by periodically venerating the veterans and decorating the youngsters for their distinctive achievements in the line.
Liaqat Jafri is an Indian poet, scholar and researcher of Urdu. He has authored books and serves as editor of Alla Taleem magazine, published by Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. He represented Jammu and Kashmir in International Festivals and Mushairas held in UAE, South Asia and elsewhere. His poems have gone viral including his popular poem about Narendra Modi. He writes songs for Bollywood movies.
The Pahari people or Pahari-speaking people is a cover term for a number of heterogeneous communities inhabiting in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, Pothohar Plateau, the Hindkowans of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and also some parts of Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir who speak Pahari languages/dialects.
