William Ernest Walsh was an American professional and college football coach. He served as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and the Stanford Cardinal, during which time he popularized the West Coast offense. After retiring from the 49ers, Walsh worked as a sports broadcaster for several years and then returned as head coach at Stanford for three seasons.
The San Francisco 49ers are a professional American football team based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This also became the second Super Bowl after Super Bowl XIV where the game was coincidentally played in the home market of one of the participants.
Super Bowl XXIII was an American football game between the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Cincinnati Bengals and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion San Francisco 49ers to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 1988 season. The 49ers defeated the Bengals 20–16, winning their third Super Bowl. The game was played on January 22, 1989, at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami. This was the first Super Bowl hosted in the Miami area in 10 years, and the first in Miami not held at the Orange Bowl.
Joseph Clifford Montana Jr. is an American former professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons, primarily with the San Francisco 49ers. Nicknamed "Joe Cool" and "the Comeback Kid", Montana is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. After winning a national championship with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Montana began his NFL career in 1979 at San Francisco, where he played for the next 14 seasons. With the 49ers, Montana started and won four Super Bowls and was the first player to be named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) three times. He also holds Super Bowl career records for most passes without an interception and the all-time highest passer rating of 127.8. In 1993, Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he played for his last two seasons and led the franchise to its first AFC Championship Game. Montana was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
John David Crow Sr. was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1957 as a halfback playing for the Texas A&M Aggies. After college, he played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago / St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers from 1958 to 1968.
Michael Singletary, nicknamed "Samurai Mike", is an American former professional football player and coach. He played as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). After playing college football for the Baylor Bears, Singletary was selected by the Bears in the second round of the 1981 NFL draft and was known as "the Heart of the Defense" for their Monsters of the Midway defense in the mid-1980s. He was part of their Super Bowl XX championship team that beat the New England Patriots. Singletary was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
Terrall Brent "T. J." Rushing is an American football coach and former player who is currently a special assistant to the head coach at Auburn University. As a player, he played as a cornerback and return specialist. He was selected by the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL) in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL draft. He played four seasons with the team. He won a Super Bowl with Indianapolis, when the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. He played college football at Stanford.
Sammy J. Davis Jr. is an American former professional football player who was a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the first round, with the 30th overall pick, of the 2003 NFL draft. He played college football at Texas A&M. Davis also played for the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Johnny Ray Holland is an American professional football coach and former player who is the linebackers coach for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). Holland played in the NFL as a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers from 1987 to 1993. He was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.
Terrance Donnell "Chet" Brooks is an American former professional football player who was a safety for three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Texas A&M Aggies and coined the name "Wrecking Crew" for their defense. Brooks was selected by the 49ers in the 11th round of the 1988 NFL draft. He started in Super Bowl XXIV.
Marvin Andrew Washington is an American former professional football defensive end who played eleven seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL draft, and played eight seasons for the New York Jets of which he was a starter for six. He additionally played for the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, accumulating a total of 40.5 sacks in 155 games played during his career. Washington played both basketball and football at the University of Idaho.
Jeffrey Alan Fuller, Jr. is a former American football wide receiver. He was most recently a member of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at Texas A&M. He has also been a member of the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks in the NFL, and Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. Fuller is currently CEO of a leading marketing firm, Fuller Marketing Corporation, out of Oklahoma City, OK.
John Alfred Roper is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. He played college football for the Texas A&M Aggies, earning consensus All-American honors in 1987. Roper was selected in the second round of the 1989 NFL draft. He was on the Cowboys' Super Bowl XXVIII championship team that beat the Buffalo Bills.
The 1989 season was the San Francisco 49ers' 40th in the National Football League (NFL), their 44th overall and their 1st season under head coach George Seifert. After going 14–2 in the regular season, the 49ers completed the season with one of the most dominant playoff runs of all time, outscoring opponents 126–26, earning their fourth Super Bowl victory and their second consecutive, where they defeated the Broncos, 55–10. They finished with the best record in the NFL for the first time since 1987. Their two losses were by a combined 5 points. The 49ers became the 2nd team in NFL history to win 4 Super Bowls, the first being the Steelers.
