Jeffrey A. Beard is a retired prison official. Beard served as Secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from December,2012 to January,2016. [1] He previously served as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections,from 2001 until 2010. [2]

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) is the Pennsylvania state agency that is responsible for the confinement,care and rehabilitation of approximately 37,000 inmates at state correctional facilities funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The agency has its headquarters in Hampden Township,Cumberland County in Greater Harrisburg,near Mechanicsburg. In October 2017,Gov. Tom Wolf signed a "memorandum of understanding" that allows the PADOC and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole to share like resources and eliminate duplicative efforts. All parole supervision now falls under the jurisdiction of the PADOC;while parole release decisions remain under the jurisdiction of the PA Board of Probation and Parole. The two agencies remain separate. With the passage of the 2021-2022 Pennsylvania budget,this merger became official and permanent.

Death row,also known as condemned row,is a place in a prison that houses inmates awaiting execution after being convicted of a capital crime and sentenced to death. The term is also used figuratively to describe the state of awaiting execution,even in places where no special facility or separate unit for condemned inmates exists. In the United States,after an individual is found guilty of a capital offense in states where execution is a legal penalty,the judge will give the jury the option of imposing a death sentence or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. It is then up to the jury to decide whether to give the death sentence;this usually has to be a unanimous decision. If the jury agrees on death,the defendant will remain on death row during appeal and habeas corpus procedures,which may continue for several decades.

The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Camp Hill,commonly referred to as SCI Camp Hill,is a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections prison in Lower Allen Township,Cumberland County,near Camp Hill in Greater Harrisburg. Its Superintendent is Laurel Harry. It has around 3,400 inmates.
Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility (TCCF) is a private prison for men,authorized by the Tallahatchie County Correctional Authority and operated by CoreCivic,formerly the Corrections Corporation of America on behalf of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The maximum-security facility is located in unincorporated Tallahatchie County,Mississippi,near Tutwiler in the Mississippi Delta. Since its opening with 352 prisoners,the prison has expanded capacity nearly ninefold,holding 2672 inmates by October 2008. It has housed inmates from Wisconsin,Colorado,Hawaii,Wyoming,Vermont,and California,in addition to prisoners from Louisiana and Mississippi. In 2010 the facility served as a county jail and also housed more than 1,000 prisoners from California. Since 2013,it has not held Mississippi state prisoners.

John Edward Wetzel is the former Pennsylvania Secretary of Corrections,having been nominated by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and confirmed in May 2011. He was subsequently re-nominated by Governor Tom Wolf in 2015. Wetzel resigned his office effective October 1,2021. Previously,he served on the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons.
Proposition 57 was an initiated California ballot proposition,approved on the November 8,2016 ballot. The Proposition allows parole consideration for nonviolent felons,changes policies on juvenile prosecution,and authorizes sentence credits for rehabilitation,good behavior,and education.
