Jiang Yuyan (born 2 November 2004) is a Chinese Paralympic swimmer who competes in the S6 disability class. She is the most decorated athlete in 2024 Summer Paralympics, winning 7 golds in total. [1]

Sport career

In 2018, Yuyan competed at the Asian Para Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, winning three gold medals in the 50 m freestyle, 100 m freestyle, and 50 m butterfly events, along with a silver medal in the 400 m freestyle event. [2]

She was one of the youngest swimmers to participate in the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships where she won three gold medals and two bronze medals. [3] She won one of these gold medals in the women's 50m butterfly S6 event with a world record of 34.56. [4] [5]

In 2021, Yuyan competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. She won 4 medals, securing two gold medals in the women's 400 m freestyle S6 and the women's 50m butterfly S6 event events, the silver medal in the women's 100 m backstroke S6 event, and the bronze medal in the women's 100 m freestyle S7 event. She competed as the youngest athlete in the delegation at the 2022 Asian Para Games held in Hangzhou, China, winning five individual gold medals, one individual bronze medal, and two gold medals in team events. [7] At the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships, Yuyan set three world records and one Asian record, bringing home four golds and two silver medals. [7]

In 2024, Yuyan competed at the Summer Paralympics held in Paris, France, and she has been the most decorated athlete in the competition, winning 7 golds in total. [1] For her first title, she set a world record of 32.59 seconds in the 50m freestyle S6 event. [8] She secured her fourth gold by breaking another world record in the women's 100m freestyle S7 with a time of 1:09.68. [9] Yuyan secured her seventh and final gold medal at Paris 2024 setting a world record in the women's 100m backstroke S6 event, with a time of 1:19.44. [10]

Personal life

Jiang Yuyan was born on 2 November 2004 in Shaoxing, China. [3] She lost her right arm and leg after she was involved in a car accident when she was three or four years old. [11] [9]

Anne Nicole Brunell, OAM is an Australian Paralympic swimmer who was born with a limb deficiency. She started competitive swimming at the age of 11 and swam for the Nunawading Swimming Club. Currie competed internationally at the 1984 New York / Stoke Mandeville Games, where she won a bronze medal in the Women's 100 m Freestyle A1 event. At the age of 13 years and 11 months, this made her the youngest Australian Paralympic medallist at that time. Currie went on to compete at the 1986 Surakarta FESPIC Games, the 1988 Seoul Paralympic Games, the 1989 Kobe FESPIC Games, the Assen 1990 World Championships and Games for the Disabled, and the 1992 Barcelona Paralympic Games.

Liesette Bruinsma is a Dutch Paralympic swimmer. She competes in S11 classification events for athletes with visual impairments. She is the 2016 double Paralympic champion within her classification. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, in Women's 400 metre freestyle S11, and Women's 100 metre freestyle S11, winning two silver medals.

McKenzie Coan is an American swimmer. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, she swam the 400m Freestyle in the S8 category. Coan was one of four S8 category swimmers chosen to compete for Team USA at the games. She later had her breakout games in the 2016 Summer Paralympics, where she would go on to win 3 gold medals in the category S7 50, 100, and 400M Freestyle races, with an additional silver medal in the 34-point women's 4 × 100 m Freestyle relay. In the process of getting her gold medal in the 50M Freestyle she also set a new Paralympic Record.

Li Bingjie is a Chinese swimmer. She is the world record holder in the short course 400 metre freestyle. She is also the Asian record holder in the long course 400 metre freestyle as well as the short course 1500 metre freestyle. She is the 2021 World Short Course champion in the 400 metre freestyle and 800 metre freestyle. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she won a gold medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 400 metre freestyle.

The women's 50 metres freestyle at the 2018 World Para Swimming European Championships was held at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin from 13–19 August. 9 classification finals are held in all over this event.

Toh Wei Soong is a Singaporean freestyle and butterfly swimmer. He was a bronze medallist in the S7 50 metre Freestyle at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a two-time gold medallist at the 2018 Asian Para Games for the S7 50 metre Freestyle and the S7 100 metre Freestyle events.

Nicole Turner, of Portarlington, County Laois, is an Irish para-swimmer, competing mainly in the S6, short stature category.
