JIMMY GEORGE was an Indian volleyball player and captain of the Indian national volleyball team. [1] Often dubbed the God of Indian volleyball, he is considered as one of the greatest volleyball players of all time. [2]

He learned volleyball from his father. In 1979, he became the first Indian to become a professional volleyball player and played for multiple clubs outside the country, most notably in Italy. [3] He still remains the youngest volleyball player to receive the Arjuna Award, one of India's highest national sporting awards. [4]

Career

Jimmy George was born to the Kudakkachira family, at Thundiyil near Peravoor in Kannur, as the second son of George Joseph and Mary George. He learned to play volleyball from his father, a former university-level player. [5] Jimmy played for St. Joseph's High School, Peravoor and in 1970, became a member of the University of Calicut volleyball team. In 1971, at the age of 16, he secured a berth in the Kerala State team and went on to represent the State nine times.[ citation needed ] In 1973, he joined St. Thomas College, Pala and represented the University of Kerala from 1973 to 1976. The team won all four All India Inter-University Championship titles during these four years. He became the captain of the team in 1973.[ citation needed ]

In 1976, Jimmy was in his first year of medical college before joining the Kerala Police where he remained a member of the Kerala Police team until his death. He took leave from the Kerala Police in 1979 and went to the Persian Gulf to play for Abu Dhabi Sports Club. [6] In 1982, he left Abu Dhabi to join the Italian Volleyball League and played for Coletto Treviso, of Treviso for a season. He then switched to System Impiani and played for them in 1983–84. He returned to India and rejoined Kerala Police where played his last Nationals at Kanpur in 1985. [7] Jimmy went back to Italy to play for Arrital team and for 1987–88 season, he signed with Eurostyle-Eurosiba, a top division club based in Montichiari, Brescia. [8]

Jimmy played for India's national volleyball team in the Asian Games in Tehran (1974), Bangkok (1978) and in Seoul (1986) where India won the bronze medal. He was captain of the Indian team that played at Saudi Arabia in 1985, and led the team to victory in India Gold Cup International Volleyball Tournament at Hyderabad in 1986. [9]

Awards and honours

At age 21, Jimmy George was the youngest volleyball player to win the Arjuna Award. [3] He was given the G.V. Raja Award in 1975 and won the Manorama Award, for the best sportsman of Kerala, in 1976. He was judged the best player in the Persian Gulf region while playing for Abu Dhabi Sports Club, from 1979–1982. He played as a professional in Italy from 1982–1984 and 1985–1987, and in his prime was considered one of the best attackers of the world. In 2000, Malayala Manorama, a newspaper in Malayalam, honored him as the best sportsman of Kerala of the 20th century. [10]

Death and legacy

Jimmy died in a car accident in Italy on 30 November 1987, at the age of 32. [11] His funeral ceremony was attended by thousands of people from different parts of the state. He was cremated at the cemetery of St. Joseph's Church, Peravoor. Following his death, the Jimmy George Foundation was established, which in 1989 instituted the 'Jimmy George Foundation Award for best sportsperson of Kerala'. The foundation also makes available cash awards at St. Joseph's High School, Peravoor, and at Devagiri College. [12]

The Government of Kerala named an indoor stadium at Thiruvananthapuram after him, which was later developed into a sports hub. At St. Thomas College, Pala, a volleyball stadium is named after him, as were a stadium of St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School and a road at Peravoor. At Kannur, the District Headquarters, Police Department named its conference hall in the name of Jimmy George. In Italy, an indoor stadium called PalaGeorge was dedicated to him at Montichiari, Brescia, and an annual junior tournament is organized in his memory. [2] Since 1989, the Kerala Volleyball League of North America organizes the Jimmy George Super Trophy Volleyball Tournament. [13]

Trivandrum has various sports venues such as Trivandrum International Stadium, Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, University Stadium (Thiruvananthapuram), Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium and Central Stadium, whereas Kochi has Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium (Kochi) and Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium. An international astro turf hockey stadium is located at Kollam city. Other major stadiums are EMS Stadium in Kozhikode, Malappuram District Sports Complex Stadium in Manjeri, Kannur Indoor Stadium in Kannur, Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Kollam and many more. All these stadiums attest to the mass appeal of such sports among Keralites.

Balwant Singh, popularly known as Ballu, was an Indian volleyball player, considered a star of the India men's national volleyball team. His son Narender is a professional volleyball player who plays for the Indian volleyball Team. Kaul village panchayat also organised Balwant Singh Memorial tournament after his death in the village.

Cyril Chakkunny Valloor is a former India men's national volleyball team player from Kerala. He represented the country in several competitions, including the 1986 Seoul Asian Games where he captained the Indian team that won the bronze medal. This was arguably one of the best volleyball team sent by India to an Asian games. In the 1980s, Indian volleyball was a force to reckon with when Jimmy George and Cyril Valloor played for the country.

The Jimmy George Sports Hub, formerly known as the Jimmy George Indoor Stadium, is a sports complex in Vellayambalam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, owned by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Kerala and is named after Indian volleyball legend Jimmy George.

Nripjit Singh Bedi was a volleyball player who was a member of the Indian national team and competed in the silver medal-winning effort at the 4th Asian Games. Bedi received the Arjuna Award from the Government of India in 1962. The Indian athlete's volleyball career lasted for 23 years. He served as a Commandant with the Border Security Force (BSF) of Punjab before his 1995 retirement.

Karunakarakurup Udayakumar was an India men's national volleyball team player known for his allround skills at offence and defence and a member of the Indian volleyball team during what many consider as the golden era of Indian volleyball. A former captain of the Indian national volleyball team, Udayakumar was a member of the team, which included Jimmy George and Cyril C. Valloor, that won the Bronze medal in the 1986 Asian Games held in Seoul. Udayakumar played for the Kerala police Volleyball team. The Government of India, in 1991, honoured his services to Indian volleyball by bestowing on him, the second highest Indian sports award, the Arjuna Award.

Action Hero Biju is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-language police procedural comedy film directed by Abrid Shine. The film stars Nivin Pauly, Anu Emmanuel, Saiju Kurup, Joju George, Alexander Prasanth, Kalabhavan Prajod, Rony David and Sohan Seenulal. George Thomas Kottukapally of Pala, Kottayam, Kerala, India, was a Member of Parliament, philanthropist, one of South India's largest plantation owners, public intellectual, an Indian independence activist and a member of the Indian National Congress including having taken part in the Indian Independence Movement through the Non co-operation movement in 1921. Post India's Independence in 1947, Kottukapally was elected as the Municipal Chairman, a position equivalent to that of a Mayor for the municipal township of Pala, Kottayam, Kerala which he held between 1948 and 1953. Further, he was elected as an Indian Member of Parliament representing the Indian National Congress party in the 1st Lok Sabha and the 2nd Lok Sabha from 1953 till 1962 for the erst-while constituency of Muvattupuzha which consisted of the whole of Idukki, parts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Chalakudy. He was also India's representative to the United Nations in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's Delegation in 1958.

PalaGeorge is an indoor arena located in Montichiari, Italy, in the province of Brescia. The capacity of the arena is 5,500 people for basketball matches and it opened in 1993. It is home of the Brescia Leonessa team of the Lega Basket Serie A and the volleyball teams Promoball Flero and Millenium Brescia of the Italian Women's Volleyball League . It was also the home court of the Pallavolo Gabeca, the volleyball club of the city of Monza.

Sijomon Joseph is an Indian cricketer who represents Kerala in domestic cricket. He is an all-rounder who bats left-handed and bowls left-arm offspin.
