Jitpursimara (also Jeetpursimara or Jeetpur Simara) is a sub-metropolitan city in Bara District in Province No. 2 of southern Nepal that was formed on 10 March 2017 after merging Gadhimai Municipality, Inarwasira, Amlekhganj, as well as parts of Manharwa, Haraiya and Rampur Tokani to form a new sub-metropolitan city. [1] At the time of the 2011 Nepal census, the former settlements that would make up the sub-metropolitan city had a joint population of 117,094 people living in 21,670 individual households. [2]

Geography

Jitpur Simara lies in the Terrai region of Nepal. To the north, it borders Hetauda Sub-metropolitan city, to south and west Birgunj Metropolitan City, and to the east Kalaiya sub-metropolitan city. It is regarded as the youngest sub-metropolitan city in the country. [3]

Climate

The highest temperature ever recorded in Simara was 42.8 °C (109.0 °F) on 6 June 1979, while the lowest temperature ever recorded was 1.0 °C (33.8 °F) on 23 January 1985. [4]

Infrastructure

Simara Airport lies in Old-Pipara Simara offering flights to Kathmandu and is the nearest airport from Kathmandu. [6] Mahendra Highway & Tribhuvan Highway link Jitpur Simara to different regions of Nepal as well as to the Indian Border.

Amlekhganj Raxaul Railway

The Amlekhganj Raxaul railway has been a historic monument since India was a British colony. The railway was constructed to transport logs and sleepers. It led to the opening of major roads and construction of the infrastructure. This railway is at the verge of extinction due to the illegal encroachment of lands/buildings and deforestation by gangs. [7]

Parsa National Park

A newly founded park hosts elephants, one horned rhinoceros, "nilgai", diverse birds, python etc. The park is based on "charkose jhhadi". [9]

Dumarwana

Dumarwana is located in the north east corner of the metropolitan region. It is the center of agriculture. A special economic zone is in development. Protection and development of the sugar mill land has been controversial. It created a loss of billions rupees of taxpayer money. Illegal occupation of government lands impeded the development of the local area and caused the loss of significant agricultural jobs. The plan is to recover these encroached lands and reestablish the Birgunj Sugar Mill for farmers. Destruction of the natural forest and river by domestic and cross border gangs created flood and desertization of fertile lands. Electricity theft using unauthorized hooks disturbed electricity availability. [10]

Birgunj Metropolitan City in Madhesh Province

Simara Airport is a domestic airport located in Jitpur Simara serving Bara District, a district in Madhesh Province in Nepal. It also serves Birgunj, Nepal's fifth biggest city.

Amlekhganj (Nepali:अमलेखगंज) is a town and Village Development Committee in Bara District in the Narayani Zone of south-eastern Nepal. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 6,709 people living in 1370 individual households. There were 3,413 males and 3,296 females at the time of census. At one time it was famed as the starting point of the Nepal Government Railway (NGR) which connected it with Raxaul in India.

Gadhimai is a former independent municipality in Bara District in of south-eastern Nepal that was merged into Jeetpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City on 10 March 2017. It was itself established on 18 May 2014 by merging Pipara Simara, Jitpur Bhawanipur, Chhata Pipra, Phattepur, Dumbarwana Village Development Committees.

Bindyabasini is a rural municipality in Parsa District in Province No. 2 of Nepal. It was formed in 2016 occupying current 5 sections (wards) from previous 5 former VDCs. It occupies an area of 26.04 km2 with a total populatiof 24,468. It now consists of 5 wards of 14 small villages

Tribhuvan Highway Highway in Nepal

The Tribhuvan Highway connects the outskirts of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, with Birganj/Raxaul on the Nepal-India border. NH 28 and NH 28A links Raxaul with Lucknow/Barauni and other locations in India.

Nepal Government Railway

The Nepal Government Railway (NGR) was Nepal's first railway in Nepal. Established in 1927 and closed in 1965, it linked Amlekhganj with Raxaul across the border in India in the south. The 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge railway was 47 km long.

This municipality is also known for its major political scrum which has originated many prominent leaders and political activist.

Department of Railways

Department of Railways under Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport is the authority to develop, maintain and plan railways in Nepal. It has its headquarter at Bishalnagar, Kathmandu. Currently it maintains two in-operation railway lines in the country: Raxaul–Sirsiya and the Jainagar–Janakpur. It has several lines been planned.
