Joanne Elizabeth Harten MBE (born 21 March 1989), also referred to as Jo Harten, is an England netball international. She was a member of the England team that won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2020 she received an MBE for her services to netball. She was also a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 Netball World Cups. At club level she has played in grand finals for Galleria Mavericks, Loughborough Lightning and Giants Netball. Harten has captained Loughborough Lightning, Giants and England teams.
Harten is originally from Harlow, Essex. She is the daughter of Barry and Chris Harten. Her family home is in Church Langley. In her youth she played various sports including association football, tennis and field hockey. Her mother, who played for a team in a local league, introduced her to netball. Harten subsequently began playing with a local club, Harlow Tegate Netball Club. [5] [6] [7] Harten graduated from Loughborough University in 2011 with a BA in International Relations. Harten played for Galleria Mavericks during the 2006–07 Netball Superleague season, helping them reach the grand final. In the grand final, Harten scored 15/19 as Mavericks lost 53–45 to Team Bath. [12] [13]
Between 2007 and 2011, while attending Loughborough University, Harten played for Loughborough Lightning. In the 2008 Netball Superleague Grand Final, Harten scored 24/30 as Lightning lost 43–39 to her former team, Galleria Mavericks. [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] In 2009 Harten was appointed Loughborough Lightning captain. [19] In October 2019, Harten guested for Loughborough Lightning in the British Fast5 Netball All-Stars Championship, helping them win the tournament as she scored 58 of their 61 goals as they defeated Wasps 61–35 in the final. During the 2012 and 2013 ANZ Championship seasons Harten played for Canterbury Tactix. [4] [24] [25] [26] [27]
Between 2014 and 2016 Harten played for Waikato Magic. [4] [28] [29]
Since 2017, Harten has played for the Giants Netball franchise in the Suncorp Super Netball. [4] [30] [31] In her debut season with Giants, Harten helped them reach the grand final but finished on the losing side as Sunshine Coast Lightning defeated Giants 65–48. In the final she scored 20/25. [32] [33] Ahead of the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball season, Harten was appointed captain of the Giants team. [34] [35] [36]
Harten made her senior debut for England on 11 November 2007 against Barbados during the 2007 World Netball Championships. [2] [6] She was subsequently a member of England teams that won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups. [37] [38] [39] She was also a member of the England teams that won the gold medals at the 2011 and 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series tournaments. [7] [40] [41] Harten was a prominent member of the England team that won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In the semi-final against Jamaica, she scored a dramatic last-second winner that saw England reach a Commonwealth Games final for the first time. Samantha May, also known as Sam May, is a former Australian netball player who played for Hertfordshire Mavericks, Wasps and Loughborough Lightning in the Netball Superleague, featuring in five grand finals in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021, winning three times. In Australia, May played for Sydney Swifts and AIS Canberra Darters in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy and for NSW Swifts in the ANZ Championship.
The Netball Superleague is a top level netball league featuring teams from the United Kingdom. The league is organised by England Netball but features teams based in England, Wales and Scotland. The league was commenced playing at the 2005–06 season, replacing the Super Cup as the elite netball competition in England. Since 2016 the league has been sponsored by VitalityHealth and, as a result, it is also known as the Vitality Netball Superleague.

Amanda Newton is a former England netball international. She was a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and at the 1999 World Netball Championships. She captained England at the 2007 World Netball Championships. Between 2001 and 2010 she played in seven senior finals and won four national titles with three different teams – London Tornadoes, Northern Thunder and Mavericks.
Loughborough Lightning is an English netball team based at Loughborough University. Their senior team plays in the Netball Superleague. In 2005–06 they were founder members of the league. They also enter under-19 and under-21 teams in the National Performance League. Using the name Loughborough Students, Loughborough University also enter teams in intervarsity leagues organised by British Universities and Colleges Sport. Together with the women's cricket team and the women's rugby union team, the netball team is one of three women's sports teams based at Loughborough University that use the Loughborough Lightning name.
Team Bath is an English netball team based at the University of Bath. Their senior team plays in the Netball Superleague. In 2005–06 they were both founder members and the inaugural champions of the league. They were Superleague champions again in 2006–07, 2008–09, 2009–10 and 2013, and British Fast5 All-Stars Champions in 2021. The netball team is one of several sports teams based at the University of Bath that use the Team Bath brand name. Others include an association football team and a field hockey team.
Yorkshire Jets were an English netball team based at Leeds Beckett University. Their senior team played in the Netball Superleague. Between 2005–06 and 2011 they played as Leeds Met Carnegie or simply Leeds Carnegie. Together with the men's basketball, women's basketball, men's association football, women's association football and rugby union teams, the netball team was one of several sports teams associated with the Carnegie School of Physical Education, now part of Leeds Beckett University, that used the Leeds Carnegie brand name. In 2005–06, Leeds Carnegie were founder members of the Netball Superleague. As Leeds Carnegie, their best Superleague performance came in 2008–09, when they finished fourth. Between 2012 and 2016 they played as Yorkshire Jets. Their best Superleague performance as Yorkshire Jets came in 2015 when they again finished fourth. In June 2016 England Netball announced that Jets had lost their place in the Superleague and the franchise was subsequently wound up.
Stacey Francis is an England netball international. She was a member of the England teams that won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups. At club level she has played for both Team Bath and Yorkshire Jets in the Netball Superleague, for Canterbury Tactix in the ANZ Championship and for West Coast Fever in Suncorp Super Netball. Between 2005–06 and 2013 she was a prominent member of the Team Bath squad as they won five Superleague titles. She played in the 2010 and 2013 grand finals and in both 2011 and 2013 she was named the Netball Superleague Player of the Season. In 2017 she was inducted into the University of Bath/Team Bath Hall of Fame for Sport.
Wasps Netball are an English netball team based at the Coventry Building Society Arena in Coventry, Warwickshire. Wasps Netball was formed in 2016 as a partnership with the Premiership Rugby team, Wasps RFC. Since 2017 their senior team has played in the Netball Superleague. They were Superleague champions in 2017 and 2018.
Beth Cobden is an England netball international. She was a member of the England teams that won gold medals at the 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At club level, she was a member of the Northern Thunder/Manchester Thunder teams that won Netball Superleague titles in 2012 and 2014. She also played in two grand finals for Loughborough Lightning which won their first ever Superleague title in 2021. In 2019 she signed for Adelaide Thunderbirds of Suncorp Super Netball.
The 2005–06 figleaves.com Netball Superleague season was the inaugural season of the new Netball Superleague which replaced the Super Cup as the top level netball competition in England. The inaugural champions were Team Bath, who defeated Galleria Mavericks in the grand final.
The 2006–07 Netball Superleague season saw Team Bath finish as champions for the second time. Team Bath retained the title without losing a single match all season. For a second successive season they defeated Galleria Mavericks in the grand final. This was also the first season that Sky Sports began to broadcast matches.
The 2008 Netball Superleague Grand Final featured Galleria Mavericks and Loughborough Lightning. Having played in both the 2006 and 2007 grand finals, this was Mavericks' third successive grand final appearance. It proved third time lucky for Mavericks who defeated Lightning 43–39.
The 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague season saw a new franchise, Wasps, win the title in their inaugural season. In the grand final they defeated regular season winners, Loughborough Lightning.
The British Fast5 Netball All-Stars Championship is a Fast5 netball pre-season tournament featuring teams from the Netball Superleague. The rules of the tournament are similar, though not identical, to the Fast5 Netball World Series. In 2017 Loughborough Lightning won the inaugural championship.
Layla Guscoth is an England netball international. She was a member of the England squad that won a bronze medal at the 2019 Netball World Cup. At club level, Guscoth has played for Loughborough Lightning, Hertfordshire Mavericks and Team Bath in the Netball Superleague and for Adelaide Thunderbirds in Suncorp Super Netball. She was a member of the Mavericks team that won the 2011 Netball Superleague. She has captained both Mavericks and Thunderbirds. In 2016 she qualified as a doctor.
Claire Maxwell, also known as Claire Brownie, is a Scotland netball international. She captained Scotland at both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2019 Netball World Cup. She also represented Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 Netball World Cup. At club level, she has played for Glasgow Wildcats, Team Bath and Sirens in the Netball Superleague and for Team Northumbria and Loughborough Lightning in the British Fast5 Netball All-Stars Championship.
The 2018 Team Bath netball season saw Team Bath finish fourth in the 2018 Netball Superleague regular season. They subsequently lost to Wasps in a play-off semi-final. During their pre-season, Team Bath also played in the inaugural Fast5 Netball All-Stars Championship and finished as runners up after losing the final to Loughborough Lightning.
The 2019 Team Bath netball season saw Team Bath finish third in the 2019 Netball Superleague regular season and qualify for the play offs. In the semi-finals they lost to the eventual overall champions, Manchester Thunder. Team Bath subsequently defeated Loughborough Lightning in the third place play-off.
