Jodi, is a collective of two internet artists, Joan Heemskerk (born 1968 in Kaatsheuvel, the Netherlands) and Dirk Paesmans (born 1965 in Brussels, Belgium), created in 1994. They were some of the first artists to create Web art and later started to create software art and artistic computer game modification. Their most well-known art piece is their website wwwwwwwww.jodi.org, which is a landscape of intricate designs made in basic HTML. [1] JODI is represented by Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam. [2]
Joan Heemskerk was born in 1968 in Kaatsheuvel, the Netherlands, and Dirk Paesmans was born in 1965 in Brussels, Belgium. They both have a background in photography and video art and studied at the CADRE Laboratory for New Media at San Jose State University in California. Paesmans also studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with the founder of video art Nam June Paik.
Both Heemskerk and Paesmans live and work out of the Netherlands. [3]
In 1999 they began the practice of modifying old video games such as Wolfenstein 3D to create art mods like SOD. [4] Their efforts were celebrated in the 1999 Webby Awards, where they took top prize in the category of "net art." Jodi used their 5-word acceptance speech (a Webby Award tradition) to criticize the event with the words "Ugly commercial sons of bitches." [5] Further video game modifications soon followed for Quake , Jet Set Willy , and the latest, Max Payne 2 (2006), to create a new set of art games. Jodi's approach to game modification is comparable in many ways to deconstructivism in architecture because they would disassemble the game to its basic parts, and reassemble it in ways that do not make intuitive sense. In one of their more well-known modifications of Quake places, the player inside a closed cube with swirling black-and-white patterns on each side. The pattern is the result of a glitch in the game engine discovered by the artists, presumably, through trial and error; it is generated live as the Quake engine tries, and fails, to visualize the interior of a cube with black-and-white checkered wallpaper.
Since 2002, Jodi have been in what has been called their "Screen Grab" period, [6] making video works by recording a computer monitor's output while working, playing video games, or coding. The "Screen Grab" period began with the four-screen video installation My%Desktop (2002), which premiered at the Plugin Media Lab in Basel. The piece appeared to depict large, malfunctioning Mac OS 9 monitors that displayed cascading windows, error messages, and files endlessly replicating themselves. To make this video, Jodi pointed-and-clicked and dragged-and-dropped frantically to give an appearance of uncontrolled chaos. [7]
Their exhibition Jodi: goodmorning goodnight was on display at the Whitney Museum from 2013 to 2015. [8] Another project, OXO (2018), premiered at the Lightbox Gallery at Harvard University and, later that year, would also form Jodi's contribution to the group exhibition Difference Engine at the Lisson Gallery in New York City, New York. [9] The piece is an interactive multichannel installation based on old computer games and tic-tac-toe. [10] [11]
Alongside Difference Engine, Jodi also held their first solo exhibition in the Los Angeles area— a self-titled exhibition at the And/Or Gallery in Pasadena, California which involved, in part, recreating the gallery's coffered ceiling on the floor to be navigated by visitors. [11]
A 2012 Vice magazine article said JODI's work "underlines the innate anarchy of the online medium, an arena that we've come to recognize as public but one that the duo constantly undermines and tweaks to their own purposes." [1]
As of October 2019, My%Desktop is part of the permanent collection presentation of the new MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. The work is presented as a monumental installation of four adjacent projections, showing screen grabs of JODI's desktop-performance. [12]
The work of JODI is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, [13] ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, [14] among other venues.
Video game art is a form of computer art employing video games as the artistic medium. Video game art often involves the use of patched or modified video games or the repurposing of existing games or game structures, however it relies on a broader range of artistic techniques and outcomes than artistic modification and it may also include painting, sculpture, appropriation, in-game intervention and performance, sampling, etc. It may also include the creation of art games either from scratch or by modifying existing games.
Alexei Shulgin is a Russian born contemporary artist, musician, and online curator. Working out of Moscow and Helsinki, Shulgin established the Immediate Photography Group in 1988 and started his career in this area of study. After 1990, he shifted his interests from photography to the Internet, and in 1994 founded Moscow-WWW-Art-Lab WWW Art Lab, collaborating with many artists from London and Slovenia. That very same year, Shulgin created an online photo museum called "Hot Pictures". In 1997, he continued with the invention of Form Art and the introduction of the Easy Life website. In 1999, Shulgin became Webmaster at FUFME, Inc. Since 2004, Shulgin has been a co-owner of Electroboutique.
RTMark is an anti-consumerist activist collective, whose stated aim is to subvert the "Corporate Shield" that "protects" American corporations. The name is derived from "Registered Trademark".
net.art refers to a group of artists who have worked in the medium of Internet art since 1994. Some of the early adopters and main members of this movement include Vuk Ćosić, Jodi.org, Alexei Shulgin, Olia Lialina, Heath Bunting, Daniel García Andújar, and Rachel Baker. Although this group was formed as a parody of avant garde movements by writers such as Tilman Baumgärtel, Josephine Bosma, Hans Dieter Huber and Pit Schultz, their individual works have little in common.

The resulting immersive situations, video and objects are often made in collaboration with researchers, craftspeople, and public participants.

Tom Corby and Gavin Baily (1970) are two London based artists who work collaboratively using public domain data, climate models, satellite imagery and the Internet. Recent work has focused on climate change and its relationship to technology and has involved collaborations with scientists working at the British Antarctic Survey. Corby and Baily are founder members of the Atmospheric Research Collective, an experimental artist group which works in collaboration with climate scientists. Heath Bunting is a British contemporary artist. Based in Bristol, he is a co-founder of the website irational.org, and was one of the early practitioners in the 1990s of Net.art. Bunting's work is based on creating open and democratic systems by modifying communications technologies and social systems. His work often explores the porosity of borders, both in physical space and online. In 1997, his online work Visitors Guide to London was included in the 10th documenta curated by Swiss curator Simon Lamunière. An activist, he created a dummy site for the European Lab for Network Collision (CERN).
Tilman Baumgärtel is a German author, media theorist, curator and journalist. He is currently professor of media theory at the University of Applied Sciences, Mainz.
Michelle Lisa Herman is an American contemporary and conceptual artist who works with sculpture, video, installation, and painting. Herman's work draws on theoretical and philosophical research, feminist and disability politics, comedy, and conceptualism and investigates ideas of agency and invisible systems of power in technologically mediated society. Herman is currently based in Washington, DC.
