Joe Lorig (born June 21, 1973), [2] is an American football coach who is currently the special teams coordinator for the Oregon Ducks. Lorig played college football for the Western Oregon Wolves.

Coaching career

Early Coaching Career

After two years coaching defensive backs at Western Oregon, Lorig would spend the next eight seasons filling a variety of roles for Idaho State and head coach Larry Lewis. During the 1999 season, Lorig served with wide receivers coach James Franklin. [3] He then spent a season at UTEP, followed by three at Central Washington.

Arizona State

Lorig spent two seasons at Arizona State in 2012-2013, where he served as the special teams coordinator and cornerbacks coach. [4]

Utah State

Lorig spent 2014 and 2015 as the linebackers and safeties coach for Utah State.

Memphis

Lorig spent three seasons at Memphis serving under head coach Mike Norvell as their special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach. During his time as the special teams coordinator, Memphis finished in the Top 5 in kickoff return average twice and in the top 20 in kickoff-return defense every year. Memphis ranked second in return defense in 2016. Under Lorig's coaching Tony Pollard tied an NCAA record with seven career kickoff returns for touchdowns. [4] In 2016, Memphis returned three kickoffs for touchdowns, breaking a 21-year scoreless drought. [5] In addition, Lorig's special teams units did not allow a kickoff or punt return for a touchdown during his time at Memphis. [6]

Penn State

On January 8, 2019, it was announced that Lorig would join Texas Tech and head coach Matt Wells as the special teams coordinator and defensive assistant. [7] [8] However on February 21, 2019, he went to Penn State , as special teams coordinator and defensive assistant, replacing Phil Galiano. [9]

Oregon

On December 30, 2021, it was reported that Lorig would be joining Dan Lanning's inaugural Oregon staff. The two previously worked together for at Memphis and Arizona State. [10]

After the Patriots parted ways with longtime head coach Bill Belichick at the end of the 2023 season, O'Brien was not retained by the team.

Peter Lembo is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the head coach at the University at Buffalo. Previously, he was the special teams coordinator at the University of South Carolina, where, in 2022, he oversaw the highest rated special teams unit in college football. Prior to that, he was the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator at the University of Memphis, a position he assumed in January 2019. Prior to Memphis, he was the associate head coach and special teams coordinator at Rice University. Before joining the coaching staff at Rice University, he was the head coach at Lehigh University from 2001 to 2005, at Elon University from 2006 to 2010, and at Ball State University from 2011 to 2015. He was also the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator at the University of Maryland for two seasons. Lembo enjoyed success in each of his three stops as a head coach and accumulated a 112–65 career record over a 15-year period. His 79–36 record in ten seasons at the FCS level makes him one of the winningest coaches in the history of that classification.

John Papuchis is the special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach for Florida State University. He is a former defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team and for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers.

John Lovett is an American football coach. He was the defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) from 2013–2014. He was the defensive coordinator for Maine in 1994, Auburn from 1999–2001, Clemson from 2002–2004, Bowling Green from 2005–2006, and Miami from 2009–2010.

Manuel Alberto Diaz II is an American football coach who is the head football coach at Duke University. He served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Pennsylvania State University from 2022 to 2023 and as the head football coach at the University of Miami from 2019 to 2021. Robb Smith is an American football coach and former player. He is currently an analyst for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Previously, he was the defensive coordinator for the Duke Blue Devils, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Arkansas Razorbacks and Minnesota Golden Gophers. Andrew Avalos is an American college football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator for Texas Christian University. He previously worked as an assistant at schools including Boise State University and Oregon before returning to Boise State as head coach.
