John Heslin (born 27 June 1992) is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Westmeath county team [1] between the 2011 and 2024 seasons, and also an Australian rules footballer for the Irish Warriors. Heslin was drafted by Australian Football League club Richmond in 2011, with Pick #90 of the Rookie Draft, but left after just three months, without playing a single game.
The St Loman's [2] clubman represented University College Dublin in the Sigerson Cup and Westmeath at all levels and starred as Westmeath reached the Leinster Under-21 Football Championship final. He also played in two games of the 2011 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and went on to become a permanent fixture in the Westmeath team.
Heslin scored 1–9 in the 2015 Leinster Senior Football Championship semi-final vctory over Meath, his team winning the game despite having to make up 11 points and not having beaten Meath for a long time. [3]
He was a playing member of the team when Westmeath won the 2019 National Football League Division 3 league title by a goal against Laois at Croke Park. [4]
In the 2022 Tailteann Cup final he overtook Dessie Dolan as Westmeath's all-time championship top scorer. [5]
He retired from inter-county football in January 2025. [3]
Heslin represented the Ireland national Australian rules football team, that won the 2011 Australian Football International Cup and kicked four goals in the tournament.
Heslin joined the Tigers as a rookie in the 2012 Pre-season Draft. [6] [7] [8] [9] After only three months on the Tigers' rookie list, homesickness proved too much for the St Loman's clubman, and he resumed his inter-county career with Westmeath. [10]

The Leinster Senior Football Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship and shortened to Leinster SFC, is an annual inter-county Gaelic football competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county Gaelic football competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship.
The Westmeath Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Westmeath GAA between the top Gaelic football clubs in County Westmeath.
Peter McDermott was an Irish Gaelic football player, coach, administrator and referee. Throughout a club career that spanned over 20 years, he played for several clubs and enjoyed championship success in different grades with Rathfeigh, Donaghmore and Navan O'Mahony's. At inter-county level, he was left corner-forward on the Meath senior football team that won All-Ireland Championship titles in 1949 and 1954 as team captain; he was the first Meath player to win six Leinster Championship medals and also claimed two National League titles. His 51 championship appearances stood as a Meath record for nearly 40 years. As well as club and county successes, McDermott was a regular for Leinster and won three Railway Cup medals.
Dessie Dolan is an Irish Gaelic football manager who was manager of the senior Westmeath county team between 2022 and 2024.
The 2010 O'Byrne Cup was a Gaelic football competition played by the teams of Leinster GAA. The competition differs from the Leinster Senior Football Championship as it also features further education colleges and the winning team does not progress to another tournament at All-Ireland level. Last year's winners of the O'Byrne Cup were Louth. The O'Byrne Cup was due to begin on 6 January 2010; however, due to Arctic conditions in the Leinster region of Ireland, the Leinster council decided to postpone all games until 16 January.

The Tailteann Cup is a second tier Gaelic football championship competition held annually since 2022 and organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is contested by those county teams who do not qualify for the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the winner is awarded the Tailteann Cup.
Patrick Flanagan was an Irish Gaelic footballer and hurler who played for club sides Mullingar Shamrocks, The Downs, and St Loman's and at inter-county level as a dual player with the Westmeath senior teams. He usually lined out as a defender. Paddy married Judy Harte in August 1957. They had four children, Fergal, Brian, Kevin and Claire. They have six grandchildren, Paul, Aoife, Ailish, Niamh, Sean and Tara. Paddy was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
The 2022 Tailteann Cup final was the final of the 2022 Tailteann Cup, the first edition of the GAA's second-tier Gaelic football competition for county teams. The match was played at Croke Park in Dublin on 9 July 2022, between Cavan and Westmeath. Westmeath won the match on a scoreline of 2–14 to 1–13.
Sam McCartan is a Gaelic footballer who plays for the St Loman's club and at senior level for Westmeath county team. He scored a goal against Laois in the 2022 Tailteann Cup. He passed the ball to Lorcan O'Toole for a second goal in the semi-final that got them past Offaly and into the competition's inaugural final.
