John Nzau Mwangangi (born 1 November 1990) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes over distances ranging from 5000 metres to the half marathon. He was the gold medallist at the 2011 African Cross Country Championships. He has won a number of high-profile European road races, including the Dam tot Damloop, 20 Kilomètres de Paris, Greifenseelauf, the Valencia Half Marathon and the Valencia Marathon.
Born in Mwingi in Kenya's Eastern Province, [1] he had his first European race wins in 2008, taking the titles at the Greifenseelauf and Morat-Fribourg Murtenlauf races. [2] [3] He first came to prominence in the 2009 season. After finishing as runner-up at the Kenya Prison Service cross country and 5000 metres championships, [4] [5] he won the 20 km de Lausanne and 10-mile Grand Prix von Bern. He won his first international medal in August, taking the silver medal over 5000 m at the 2009 African Junior Athletics Championships. He then returned to the European road circuit and had a string of victories: he retained his Greifenseelauf and Morat-Fribourg titles, won the Route du Vin half marathon in a personal best of 60:36 minutes, and also won the shorter La Corrida Bulloise and Basel Stadtlauf races. His 2010 season began with his first victory at the Kenya Prisons Cross Country, where he beat Silas Kiplagat. [7] In March ran 59:56 minutes to dip under the hour mark for the first time at the City-Pier-City Half Marathon, taking third in a close race. [8] He won the Rabat Half Marathon in April. In September he won the Dam tot Damloop, [9] placed second at the Tilburg 10K, then came fourth at the Singelloop Utrecht. He ended his season on a high with wins at the 20 Kilomètres de Paris and the Valencia Half Marathon. [6]
Silas Kiplagat defeated Mwangangi at the Prisons Cross Country in 2011, [10] but he rebounded by lifting the inaugural men's senior title at the 2011 African Cross Country Championships. [11] That same month he ran at the Lisbon Half Marathon and came runner-up behind Zersenay Tadese, who ran the then-second-fastest time ever. [12] He defended his title at the Rabat Half Marathon a month later. In the second half of the season, he came third at the Dam tot Damloop in a 10-mile best time of 45:13 minutes. [13] He won for a second consecutive time at the Paris 20K then completed the same feat at the Valencia Half Marathon, where he improved his best over the distance to 59:45 minutes. [14] In December he came third at the Montferland Run. [15] He was runner-up to Zersenay Tadese at the Lisbon Half Marathon in March 2012. [16] He was one of the pacemakers at the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon and the top two runners finished under two hours and five minutes. [17] At the 2012 World Half Marathon Championships in Kavarna, Bulgaria, he won the bronze medal in a time of 1:01:01 hours, and helped his teammates to win the team title. His last outing over that distance that year, saw him finish as runner-up in Valencia.
He ran at the Kenyan Cross Country Championships at the start of 2013, but did not make the team for the global event, ending up 14th. He also failed to make the national team in the 10,000 m that year. He fared better on the roads, winning the Media Maratón Santa Pola and Luanda Half Marathon races. He ran a season's best of 60:37 minutes for third at the Valencia Half. [18] His marathon debut that year resulted in a time of 2:09:32 hours for fifth place at the Rotterdam Marathon. [19]
Moses Cheruiyot Mosop is a Kenyan middle and long distance athlete. He competed for Kenya at the 2004 Olympic Games and went on to take 10,000 metres bronze at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. He has also been successful in cross country running, having won the silver at the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships as well as team gold with Kenya in 2007 and 2009.
Lornah Kiplagat is a Dutch professional long-distance runner. She was born in Kabiemit, Rift Valley Province, Kenya and came to the Netherlands in 1999. She gained Dutch citizenship in 2003 and has competed for the Netherlands since. She used to run not only road events but also in cross country and track and field.
Mestawet Tufa is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. She was the winner of the women's 10,000 metres at the 2007 All-Africa Games and the runner up in the senior women's race at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships.
Bernard Kiprop Kipyego is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon. His personal best for the event is 2:06:22 hours. He has reached the podium at the Amsterdam Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Boston Marathon, Paris Marathon and Tokyo Marathon.
Philes Moora Ongori is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in half marathon and marathon events.
Hilda Kibet is a Dutch runner of Kenyan birth. She is the sister of Sylvia Kibet and the niece of Lornah Kiplagat. She obtained Dutch nationality in October 2007.
Moses Ndiema Masai is a Kenyan runner who specializes in the 10,000 metres.
Peninah Arusei Jerop is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who specialises in road running competitions, especially the half marathon. She has represented Kenya at the Olympics, having competed in the 10,000 metres race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Arusei has won races on the European road circuit, including the Dam tot Damloop, Berlin Half Marathon and Lisbon Half Marathon.
James Kipsang Kwambai is a runner from Kenya, who specialises in marathons. He is a former Kenyan record holder in the event, with his personal best of 2:04:27 hours in 2009. At the time this made him the second fastest runner ever, behind Haile Gebrselassie.
Patrick Makau Musyoki is a runner from Kenya. He is a former world record holder in the marathon—His time of 2:03:38, run at the 2011 Berlin Marathon, was the world record for two years, until it was beaten by Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich at the 2013 Berlin Marathon. He is also notable for his half marathon performances, having won a number of prominent competitions in Europe in sub-1-hour performances.
Sammy Kirop Kitwara is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in road running events. He is coached by Moses Kiptanui. As of November 2023 he is the 33rd fastest half marathon runner in history, having run 58.48 in 2011, which was the 4th fastest ever at the time.
Anikó Kálovics is a Hungarian runner who specializes in the 10,000 metres and the marathon. She is a four-time Olympian (2000–2012) and has won both the Venice Marathon and Italian Marathon.
Vincent Kipruto Limo is a Kenyan long distance runner who specialises in the marathon. He made his debut in the event in 2008 and won the Paris Marathon a year later. He then placed top three at the Chicago Marathon and the Rotterdam Marathon.
Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai is a Kenyan long distance runner who specialises in road running competitions. On 18 April 2011 at the Boston Marathon, Mutai ran the fastest marathon ever at the time in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes 2 seconds, though the time was not recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations as a world record since the Boston course does not meet the criteria to be eligible for the mark.
Getu Feleke (Amharic:) ጌቱ ፈለቀ; born 28 November 1986) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who runs mainly in half marathon and marathon races. He won the 2010 Amsterdam Marathon with a course record time of 2:05:44 and set his personal best of 2:04:50 hours in a second-place finish at the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon.
Wilson Kwambai Chebet is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who specialises in road running competitions. He has a marathon best of 2:05:27 hours.
Feyse Tadese Boru is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes in the half marathon.
Ayele Abshero Biza is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who mainly competes in cross country and road races.
Erba Tiki Gelana is an Ethiopian professional long-distance runner who competes in marathon races. Her personal best of 2:18:58 had been the Ethiopian national record for the event from 2012 to 2017. She won the 2011 Amsterdam Marathon and the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon. She won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics with a time of 2:23:07, a new Olympic record.
Kenneth Kiprop Kipkemoi is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the 10,000 metres, the half marathon, and the marathon. He was the 2012 African champion in the 10,000 m, has a half marathon best of 59:11 minutes, and was the winner of the 2018 Rotterdam Marathon with a personal best of 2:05:44.
