History
The first public school for African Americans in Orlando was formed in 1895 and housed in a building on the corner of Garland Avenue and Church Street. The school was renamed Johnson Academy for principal Lymus Johnson and moved to a new building on the corner of Parramore Avenue and Jefferson Street. In 1921, a brick Colonial Revival building was constructed on the corner of Parramore Avenue and Washington Street at a cost of $34,000. In 1931 the school's first 12th grade class graduated. [3]
The school was renamed for the final time in honor of L. C. Jones, a longtime school principal and donor of the property. [4]
It was a member of the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association.
In 1952, the school moved west of downtown to its current location on Rio Grande Avenue. In 1988, as part of a schoolwide project, Jones entered the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the World's Largest Box of Popcorn. Aided by a propane-powered air popper designed by engineering students from the University of Central Florida, Jones students popped 3,787.5 cubic feet (107.25 m3) of popcorn. [5] Orville Redenbacher, whose company donated the unpopped corn, mentioned the feat during a broadcast of the now-defunct Pat Sajak Show.
A new campus consisting of a two-story academic building, separate buildings for science, technology, and music, an administrative building, cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, and dedicated historical museum was constructed during the period 2001–2004. During construction, students attended classes in portables across the street from the campus. The new campus was opened for the start of the 2004–2005 school year.
Academics
Jones High School is an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the Diploma Programme for juniors and seniors and the Middle Years Programme for freshmen and sophomores in articulation with Memorial Middle School.
Jones High students may also enroll in its Medical Arts Magnet Program or in an advanced studies program of multiple Advanced Placement (AP) courses. AP Courses offered include Art History, Biology, Calculus (AB), Chemistry, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, European History, French Language, Human Geography, Music Theory, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Psychology, Spanish Language, Statistics, Studio Art, United States Government and Politics, United States History, and World History.
Selected students who show academic promise who are also among the first in their families to go to college are invited to participate in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program.
Athletics
Jones High's varsity sports teams include baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, flag football (girls), football, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball, wrestling, and weightlifting. [6]
The Jones High boys basketball team won the Florida 3A state championship in 2006 under Coach Jerry Howard. [7] The girls basketball team has won two Florida state championships, in 2004 under Coach Jimmy Mincy, and in 1997 under Coach Kelvin Harris. [8]
Bartow Senior High School is the only high school in Bartow, Florida. It resulted from a merger of the whites-only Summerlin Institute and Union Academy, a school for African Americans, after desegregation.
F. W. Buchholz High School is a high school in Gainesville, Florida, United States. Buchholz is one of seven high schools in Alachua County. Opened in January 1971, it is the largest public high school in Gainesville, with 2,241 students in 2020. The Buchholz Math Team was dubbed "America's Greatest Math Team" by The Wall Street Journal in 2022, when Buchholz won first place for the 14th time in the annually held national Mu Alpha Theta math competition.
Cooper City High School, also referred to as CCHS, is a high school located in Cooper City, Florida, which teaches grades 9–12. The school includes standard high school curriculum plus specialized classes devoted to career development including auto tech, child care, and computer programming. It has an average enrollment of approximately 2,400 students. Vera Perkovic is the principal. The school colors are red, black, and white and the mascot is a cowboy named "Pistol Pete." The school has been awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award. Cooper City has an FLDOE school grade of "A" for the 2018–2019 academic year. The school was also ranked #382 in the High School Challenge Index of 2011 out of approximately 30,000 schools, marking it as one of the top high schools in the entire nation. It is the 88th best school in the state of Florida out of 762 schools as reported by U.S. News & World Report.
Hialeah Senior High School is a public high school located at 251 E 47th Street in Hialeah, Florida, United States.
H.B. Plant High School is a public high school located in the neighborhood of South Tampa in Tampa, Florida, United States. It opened in 1927 between South Himes Avenue on the east and Dale Mabry Highway on the west. The school is named in honor of railroad and hotel tycoon Henry B. Plant, who connected Tampa to the United States railroad system in 1884, helping the isolated village to grow into a large city over the following decades. The school mascot is the Panther, and its motto is "Strength Through Unity." Plant High School has an enrollment of more than 2,500 students.
Spruce Creek High School is a public secondary school located in the city of Port Orange, Florida. It is the largest IB high school in North America and is one of Newsweek's Top 100 High Schools. Spruce Creek High School is part of the Volusia County Schools system, which encompasses eight other high schools and 80 schools total. The one-story campus is dominated by a single, contiguous main building, with a separate, smaller Multi-purpose building and several portable classroom buildings, which are spread out across the campus. The school has been named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, as well as a Florida Music Demonstration School several years in a row. Ranked 1st in North America and 3rd in the world for the number of IB exams administered.
Seminole High School, originally established as Sanford High School, is a public high school located in Sanford, Florida, operated by Seminole County Public Schools. From 2006 to 2011, Seminole High School was one of the schools in Seminole County on Newsweek's list of the top 1,200 schools in the United States. The school offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The Academy for Health Careers provides a curriculum based on a future career in health care. Students take a health class and health material is integrated into the curriculum of all other subjects. Seminole High also offers Advanced Placement courses in a range of subjects.
Lake Mary High School is a public high school located in Seminole County, Florida, operating under Seminole County Public Schools. It was opened in 1981.
William Rennick Boone High School is a public high school in Orlando, Florida. Built in 1952, the school is one of twenty-two high schools in the Orange County Public Schools system.

Apopka High School is in Apopka in northwest Orange County, Florida, United States. The school has been named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
Columbia High School (CHS) is a four-year public high school located in Lake City, Florida. The school's mascot is the Fighting Tigers and the colors are purple and gold.
Pickerington High School Central is a public high school in Pickerington, Ohio, United States. It is one of two high schools in the Pickerington Local School District. In the city of Pickerington, it is referred to simply as Central and their mascot is the Tiger. In 2003, "Pickerington High School" split into two high schools, Pickerington High School Central and Pickerington High School North. Construction of Pickerington High School, which currently houses Pickerington High School Central was completed in the fall of 1991. The high schools which previously served the Pickerington community were Pickerington High School and Violet Township High School. Before 1906, there were many schools in the Pickerington/Violet Township area. The Pickerington School (c.1883), a two-story, two-room school was built to replace the original building. Heritage Elementary is now housed in the Pickerington School. The school has sports programs that include football, boys basketball, girls basketball, girls volleyball, boys volleyball, wrestling, boys tennis, girls tennis, boys soccer, girls soccer, boys golf, girls golf, cross country, cheerleading, track and field, baseball, softball, and Marching Band.
Ocoee High School is a public secondary school located in Ocoee, Florida, 12.5 miles west of Orlando. Built in 2005, Ocoee High School operates as apart of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) and serves students from the cities of Ocoee, Apopka, Winter Garden, and Western Pine Hills. Ocoee High School is currently serving 2,479 students.
Windermere Preparatory School is a private, coeducational PK–12 college preparatory school in Lake Butler, an unincorporated area in Orange County, Florida, within the Orlando metropolitan area. Established in 2000 and in proximity to the Town of Windermere, it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Southern Association of Independent Schools, Florida Council of Independent Schools, and International Baccalaureate World School. It is a part of the Nord Anglia Education network.
