The Jones Party was a political party in Malta.

History

The party was established in 1945 in Gozo. [1] It won two seats in the 1947 elections, but lost both in the 1950 elections. After failing to win a seat in the 1951 elections it subsequently disappeared. [1]

Gozo Island of Malta

Gozo, known locally as Għawdex and in antiquity as Gaulos, is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of Malta. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Compared to its southeastern neighbour, Gozo is more rural and known for its scenic hills, which are featured on its coat of arms.

1947 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta between 25 and 27 October 1947. They were the first elections held under universal suffrage for women and Agatha Barbara became the first woman elected to Parliament. These elections saw the Labour Party win 24 of the 40 seats.

1950 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta between 2 and 4 September 1950. Following the Labour Party splitting into the Malta Labour Party and the Malta Workers Party, the Nationalist Party emerged as the largest party, winning 12 of the 40 seats.

Dom Mintoff Maltese politician

Domenico Mintoff, was a Maltese Socialist politician, architect, anti-colonialist revolutionary, and civil engineer who was leader of the Labour Party from 1949 to 1984, and was 8th Prime Minister of Malta from 1955 to 1958, when Malta was still a British colony, and again, following independence, from 1971 to 1984. His tenure as Prime Minister saw the creation of a comprehensive welfare state, nationalisation of large corporations, a substantial increase in the general standard of living and the establishment of the Maltese republic, but was later on marred by a stagnant economy, a rise in authoritarianism and outbreaks of political violence.

Labour Party (Malta) political party in Malta

The Labour Party, formerly known as the Malta Labour Party (MLP), is a social-democratic political party in Malta. Along with the Nationalist Party (PN), the Labour Party is one of two major contemporary political parties in Malta. Since the March 2013 general election, the party has been the governing party in the Maltese House of Representatives. The Labour Party is a member of the Party of European Socialists, and was a member of the Socialist International until December 2014.

Communist Party of Malta is a communist party in Malta. PKM was founded in 1969 at a secret congress in the town of Gwardamangia, following the departure from the Malta Labour Party of a group of left-wing militants that had been active in the struggle for national independence. Anthony Vassallo was the founding general secretary of the party. The party first contested the national general elections of 1987 when it obtained 0.1% of first preference votes and no parliamentary seats. Since then it has not stood for any other election whether at a European, national or local level.

1981 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta on 12 December 1981.

2008 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta on Saturday, 8 March 2008 alongside local elections. The governing Nationalist Party won a narrow victory over the Malta Labour Party.

2013 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta on Saturday, 9 March 2013. The Labour Party won a majority of seats thus defeating the Nationalist Party, which had been in power since 1987, save a short period of less than two years between 1996 and 1998 when Labour was in government.

The Constitutional Party was a pro-British political party in Malta. It had representatives in the Maltese Legislative Assembly and Council of Government between 1921 and 1945, and again between 1950 and 1953, forming a government between 1927 and 1930 with the support of the Labour Party. A splinter group, the Progressive Constitutionalist Party was represented in Parliament between 1962 and 1966. The party was very much centred on the figure of its long-time leader Lord Strickland, with party supporters colloquially known in Maltese as "Stricklandjani".

The Democratic Nationalist Party was a conservative political party in Malta.

1921 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta on 18 and 19 October 1921. The Maltese Political Union emerged as the largest party, winning 14 of the 32 seats in the Legislative Assembly and four of the seven elected seats in the Senate. Joseph Howard became Prime Minister.

2017 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta on Saturday, 3 June 2017. The elections were contested by the Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the Nationalist Party, led by opposition leader Simon Busuttil, and four other parties; making it the most parties fielding candidates since 1962. The result was a victory for the Labour Party, with 55% of the popular vote. Voter turnout reached 92%.

The 2019 European Parliament election was held in Malta on the 25th of May 2019. 8 different political parties took part in the elections, of which, only 2 managed to win seats in the European Parliament. The two parties to do so were the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party, who won 4 and 2 seats respectively.
