Journal of Current Chinese Affairs is a German open access academic journal (ISSN 0341-6631), published by Sage Journals. [1] The internationally refereed journal focuses on political, economic and social developments in the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. [2] This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). [1] The journal is indexed on SCOPUS and has a cite score of 2.2 in 2023. [3]
The Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, first published in 1972 as China aktuell, is edited by the GIGA Institute for Asian Studies (GIGA Institut für Asien-Studien). The journal, published three times a year, [1] is part of the GIGA Journal Family of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies' (Hamburg). The journal's editorial board is led by Kerry Brown and Sinan Chu. [4]
The GIGA Journal Family was funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) as a pilot project in open-access publishing. Since the beginning of 2009, the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, and the other socio-scientific journals of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies, have been transformed into open-access journals. The institute also continues to publish print versions of all journals of current Chinese affairs.
The Journal of Current Chinese Affairs analyses current issues in political, social and economic life; culture; and development in contemporary China, including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. In addition, special background analyses examine important events in accordance with their respective contexts. Although the Journal is Open-Access, its author process charge is sponsored by GIGA.
The Journal of Current Chinese Affairs reaches a broad readership in academic, administration, and business circles, but it is also intended for practitioners and general readers interested in contemporary China. The journal is included in the collections of various public and university libraries in Germany as well as overseas. To ensure the journal's quality, essays are evaluated in a double-blind peer-review process. [5] [6]

Africa Spectrum is an interdisciplinary double-blind peer-reviewed academic journal concentrating on current political, sociological, historical, and development matters in Africa. It was founded in 1966 and was the only German academic journal exclusively devoted to Africa. Today, Africa Spectrum is published in English and is Platinum Open Access. Africa Spectrum is published three times a year by the GIGA Institute of African Affairs. Sebastian Heilmann is a German political scientist and sinologist. He serves as the founding president of the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) in Berlin. Heilmann is a professor for the political economy of China at the University of Trier with many publications on China's political system, economic policy and international relations.

Andreas Martin Fulda is a German political scientist, sinologist, sociologist, and an expert on China–EU relations. He is currently an associate professor of politics at the University of Nottingham and a senior fellow at the University of Nottingham Asia Research Institute and China Policy Institute of this university. Fulda is a foreign affair advisor of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC). He had lived and worked in Mainland China and Taiwan as a staff of the China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) for eight years. Fulda frequently comments on current Chinese affairs in the media and he is a fierce critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Fulda argues that German universities do not need to rely on Confucius Institutes to organise events on China. His book The Struggle for Democracy in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong (2020) led to a smear campaign against him. Andreas Fulda sharply criticized German chancellor Olaf Scholz's November 2022 visit to China.
