Jules Albert Wijdenbosch (born 2 May 1941 [1] in Paramaribo) is a Surinamese politician who was President of Suriname from 1996 to 2000. [2] He was a member of the National Democratic Party,which held absolute power in Suriname during the 1980s. He was Prime Minister from April 1987 until January 1988,Vice President from January 1991 until September 1991, [3] and President from September 1996 until August 2000. [4] He is now the leader of Democratic National Platform 2000. The Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge,which connects the East of the country with Paramaribo,has been named after Wijdenbosch. [5]
Paramaribo is the capital and largest city of Suriname,located on the banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo District. Paramaribo has a population of roughly 241,000 people,almost half of Suriname's population. The historic inner city of Paramaribo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.

Henck Alphonsus Eugène Arron was a Surinamese politician who served as the first Prime Minister of Suriname after it gained independence in 1975. A member of the National Party of Suriname,he served from 24 December 1973 with the transition government,to 25 February 1980. He was overthrown in a coup d'état by the military,led by Dési Bouterse. Released in 1981 after charges of corruption were dropped,he returned to banking,his previous career. In 1987,Arron was elected as Vice President of Suriname and served until another coup in 1990 overthrew the government.
Democrats of the 21st Century was a political party in Suriname from 2000 to 2010. The party originally broke away from the Party for National Unity and Solidarity,and eventually merged into the Pertjajah Luhur. Its leader was Soewarto Moestadja.
The National Assembly is the Parliament,representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo,after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. A reconstruction of the old building was completed in 2022.
Nieuw Amsterdam is the capital of the Commewijne District in Suriname. It is a small coastal town situated at the confluence of the Suriname River and Commewijne River,just across from Paramaribo,the country's capital. Its population at the 2012 census was 5,650,with around 1,200 people living in the main town,most of whom are of Javanese and East Indian origin. It is the location of the historical Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam,today an open-air museum. The town of Mariënburg with former sugarcane factory is located 3 km from Nieuw Amsterdam and part of the resort.
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2005. The governing New Front for Democracy and Development of president Ronald Venetiaan lost seats,remaining the largest party but failing to get a majority in the National Assembly of Suriname. Despite this Venetiaan was re-elected as president after obtaining sufficient support to win a majority in the election for president.
The vice president of Suriname is the second-highest political position in Suriname,after the president. The president and the vice president are elected by the National Assembly for five-year terms.
Meerzorg is a town and resort (municipality) in Suriname,located on the eastern bank of the Suriname River,directly opposite the capital Paramaribo. Its population at the 2012 census was 12,405. Since 2000 it has been connected to Paramaribo by the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge,named after the former President Jules Wijdenbosch.

The Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge,also called Suriname bridge and known locally as Bosje Brug,is a bridge over the Suriname River between the capital city Paramaribo and Meerzorg in the Commewijne District. The bridge is part of the East-West Link,and is named after former president Jules Wijdenbosch. Constructed by Dutch constructor Ballast-Nedam,the bridge has two lanes,is 1504 metres long,and was opened on 20 May 2000.
The (northern) East-West Link is a road in Suriname between Albina in the eastern part of the country to Nieuw Nickerie in the western part,via the capital city of Paramaribo. The southern East-West Link connects Paramaribo with Apoera via Bitagron. Construction of the road link started in the 1960s.
The 1980 Surinamese coup d'état,usually referred to as the Sergeants' Coup,was a military coup in Suriname which occurred on 25 February 1980,when a group of 16 sergeants of the Surinamese Armed Forces (SKM) led by Dési Bouterse overthrew the government of Prime Minister Henck Arron with a violent coup d'état. This marked the beginning of the military dictatorship that dominated the country from 1980 until 1991. The dictatorship featured the presence of an evening curfew,the lack of freedom of press,a ban on political parties,a restriction on the freedom of assembly,a high level of government corruption,and the summary executions of political opponents.
