Justin Dello Joio,(born October 18,1955,in New York City) is an American composer [1] and the fifth-generation composer in the Dello Joio family. [2]
Dello Joio completed his formal education at the Juilliard School,earning a Bachelor's,Master's,and a Doctoral degree in composition where he studied with Vincent Persichetti,Roger Sessions,and David Diamond. During his years at Juilliard,he was honored with an annual composition award. [3]
Dello Joio has worked as a composer throughout his adult life. He was honored with the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Music in 2004,and the American Academy's Virgil Thompson Award for his opera Blue Mountain. [4] His music,although not part of the American Neo Romantic style,is noted for its communicative emotional content,structural clarity and colorful orchestration,and his early influences include music of composers Jacob Druckman and Witold Lutosławski. Dello Joio recent Concerto for Piano and Orchestra Oceans Apart was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for Garrick Ohlsson,and premiered with Ohlsson and Alan Gilbert conducting the Boston Symphony in Symphony Hall in January 2023. His music has been performed by the Boston Symphony, [6] The Detroit Symphony,The Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society,The American Brass Quintet, [7] Garrick Ohlsson,Carter Brey,Ani Kavafian,Jeremy Denk,Jay Campbell,Stephan Gosling,and William Wolfram. [8] He has received commissions from the Boston Symphony Orchestra,the Koussevitsky Foundation,and the New York Philharmonic principal cellist,Carter Brey. His one-act opera,Blue Mountain,was commissioned by Det Norske Blaseensemble and was released by Bridge Records. [9] [10]
Dello Joio has taught composition and related subjects at New York University beginning in 1983,and has been a faculty composer-in-residence at the Steinhardt Music Department at New York University since 2008 and a professor of orchestration in the Department of Composition at the Juilliard School College since 2017. [1] He has been guest composer in residence at Vienna Summer Music Festival (2019),São Paulo Contemporary Music Festival (2018),Charles Ives Music Festival (2017). [11]
Ellen Taaffe Zwilich is an American composer,the first female composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Her early works are marked by atonal exploration,but by the late 1980s,she had shifted to a postmodernist,neoromantic style. She has been called "one of America's most frequently played and genuinely popular living composers." She was a 1994 inductee into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Zwilich has served as the Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor at Florida State University.
Shulamit Ran is an Israeli-American composer. She moved from Israel to New York City at 14,as a scholarship student at the Mannes College of Music. Her Symphony (1990) won her the Pulitzer Prize for Music. In this regard,she was the second woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music,the first being Ellen Taaffe Zwilich in 1983. Ran was a professor of music composition at the University of Chicago from 1973 to 2015. She has performed as a pianist in Israel,Europe and the U.S.,and her compositional works have been performed worldwide by a wide array of orchestras and chamber groups.
Roger Huntington Sessions was an American composer,teacher and musicologist. He had initially started his career writing in a neoclassical style,but gradually moved further towards more complex harmonies and postromanticism,and finally the twelve-tone serialism of the Second Viennese School. Sessions' friendship with Arnold Schoenberg influenced this,but he would modify the technique to develop a unique style involving rows to supply melodic thematic material,while composing the subsidiary parts in a free and dissonant manner.
George Theophilus Walker was an American composer,pianist,and organist,and the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music,which he received for his work Lilacs in 1996. Walker was married to pianist and scholar Helen Walker-Hill between 1960 and 1975. Walker was the father of two sons,violinist and composer Gregory T.S. Walker and playwright Ian Walker.

Garrick Olof Ohlsson is an American classical pianist. He is the only American to have won first prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition,at the VIII competition in 1970. He also won first prize at the Busoni Competition in Italy and the Montreal Piano Competition in Canada. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and received the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor,Michigan. Ohlsson has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards,winning one in 2008.
Samuel Hans Adler is an American composer,conductor,author,and professor. During the course of a professional career which ranges over six decades he has served as a faculty member at both the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School. In addition,he is credited with founding and conducting the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra which participated in the cultural diplomacy initiatives of the United States in Germany and throughout Europe in the aftermath of World War II. Adler's musical catalogue includes over 400 published compositions. He has been honored with several awards including Germany's Order of Merit –Officer's Cross.

Bernard Rands is a British-American contemporary classical composer. He studied music and English literature at the University of Wales,Bangor,and composition with Pierre Boulez and Bruno Maderna in Darmstadt,Germany,and with Luigi Dallapiccola and Luciano Berio in Milan,Italy. He held residencies at Princeton University,the University of Illinois,and the University of York before emigrating to the United States in 1975;he became a U.S. citizen in 1983. In 1984,Rands's Canti del Sole,premiered by Paul Sperry,Zubin Mehta,and the New York Philharmonic,won the Pulitzer Prize for Music. He has since taught at the University of California,San Diego,the Juilliard School,Yale University,and Boston University. Dalit Hadass Warshaw is a New York-based composer,pianist,thereminist. Previously on the composition and music theory faculty of Boston Conservatory,she currently serves on the composition faculty at Juilliard and CUNY-Brooklyn College. Her works have been performed by dozens of orchestral ensembles,including the New York Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras,the Boston Symphony,the Cleveland Orchestra,the Houston Symphony,the Y Chamber Orchestra,the Colorado Symphony and the Albany Symphony Orchestra. In April 2006,her piece After the Victory for orchestra and chorus,was premiered by the Grand Rapids Symphony and the North American Choral Company. Her first recording,entitled "Invocations" was released by Albany Records in 2011. Her first piano concerto,Conjuring Tristan, was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Symphony in 2014. The work was inspired by Richard Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, as well as by Thomas Mann's novella Tristan. The piece received its world premiere in January 2015,with Warshaw as the soloist.
