Jutta Oesterle-Schwerin (25 February 1941) is a German politician, representative of the Social Democratic Party and later in life of Alliance '90/The Greens. She is the sister of Israeli historian Tom Segev.

Life

Born and raised in Jerusalem to Jewish refugees from Germany, Oesterle-Schwerin's father Heinz Schwerin was killed in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and her mother Ricarda was a photographer. She studied Interior design in Stuttgart and graduated in 1969, and in 1974 became a member of Social Democratic Party (SPD). In 1980, (NATO Double-Track Decision), she left German party SPD and became 1983 a member of German party Alliance '90/The Greens. From 1987 to 1990 she was member of German Bundestag for Alliance '90/The Greens. [1] On 28 November 1989, she objected to German reunification, stating that there was not a single sensible reason for German unity. [2] Until 2008 Oesterle-Schwerin worked as a freelance architect in Berlin.

The German Green Party has been present in the German parliament (Bundestag) continuously since 29 March 1983 as a parliamentarian party. The status as a fraktion was lost from 1990 to 1994, being demoted to a Gruppe (group), after only the East German wing managed to pass the 5% election threshold in the December 1990 German federal election.

Federal elections were held in Germany on 2 December 1990 to elect the members of the 12th Bundestag. This was the first all-German election since the Nazi show election in April 1938, the first multi-party all-German election since that of March 1933, which was held after the Nazi seizure of power and was subject to widespread suppression, and the first free and fair all-German election since November 1932. The result was a comprehensive victory for the governing coalition of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which was reelected to a third term. The second vote result of the CDU/CSU, 20,358,096 votes, remains the highest ever total vote count in a democratic German election.

She became co-chair of her party caucus in the Bundestag (2002–2005) and the Greens' Vice President of the Bundestag on 18 October 2005, a position that she held until 2013 and would later reprise in 2021.
