Carrier current transmission, originally called wired wireless, employs guided low-power radio-frequency signals, which are transmitted along electrical conductors. The transmissions are picked up by receivers that are either connected to the conductors, or a short distance from them. Carrier current transmission is used to send audio and telemetry to selected locations, and also for low-power broadcasting that covers a small geographical area, such as a college campus. The most common form of carrier current uses longwave or medium wave AM radio signals that are sent through existing electrical wiring, although other conductors can be used, such as telephone lines.
KQPW-LP was a non-commercial low-power FM Christian radio station licensed to West Quincy, Missouri, United States, broadcasting with 100 watts of effective radiated power on 102.5 MHz. The station licensee, School of Christ, a small private Christian school in Quincy, Illinois, was granted a construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission on November 26, 2001, with the stated purpose "to further the Gospel of Christ to our students and the surrounding area" and "to instruct those students and other interested area youth in the field of radio electronics and production". The station went on the air and applied for a license to cover in August 2002, and the FCC granted this license in September. The station used the slogan "Quincy's True Power Station". KQPW-LP is no longer broadcasting as the FCC canceled its license on June 21, 2006.
WCOM-LP is a community low-power FM radio station, broadcasting from Carrboro, North Carolina. It broadcasts from a radio tower over Mary Scroggs Elementary School soccer field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Its studios are located in Carrboro at 300-G E. Main Street, near the Cat's Cradle. It is the first low-power FM station in the area, and began broadcasting in June 2004. In November 2004, the station began broadcasting a full lineup of local radio programming, including some Spanish language programming. It airs a variety format.
