Kalebaskreek is an indigenous village of Kalina [2] Amerindians in the resort of Calcutta in the Saramacca District in Suriname.

History

Kalebaskreek is a fishing village [3] on the Coppename River. The village can only be reached by boat. It is located about one hour upstream of Boskamp. [4] The nearest village is the former leper colony of Batavia which is located 15 minutes downstream. [4]

The school of Kalebaskreek used to be located in a building of the Moravian Church. In 2014, a new school was constructed. [5] The clinic in the village is operated by the Mungra Medical Centre in Nieuw-Nickerie. [6] In 2019, a waste incineration plant was opened in the village. [7] The village chief as of 2018 is Conchita Alkantara. [1]

Calcutta is a resort in Suriname, located in the Saramacca District. Its population at the 2012 census was 1,647, and is mainly inhabited by East Indians. The town is named after Calcutta, India. From 1873 onwards, indentured workers were recruited from India to work the plantations. Most of the workers departed from Calcutta. About one third returned to India, but most decided to stay in Suriname.

Ronnie Brunswijk is a Surinamese politician, businessman, footballer, convicted drug trafficker, former rebel leader, and the current Vice President of Suriname. Brunswijk served in the early 1980s as the personal bodyguard of Dési Bouterse, who overthrew the government in 1980 in a military coup. Brunswijk was discharged after asking for a raise, and denied back pay. In 1985, Brunswijk formed the Surinamese Liberation Army, better known as the Jungle Commando.

The case was a person who travelled from the Netherlands the previous week. On 3 April 2020, one person died. On 3 May 2020, all nine cases had recovered. On 18 May, an eleventh case was identified.

Jacques Adam Drielsma (14 October 1886 – 31 July 1974) was a Surinamese lawyer and notary who served as acting Prime Minister of Suriname in 1951, and Finance minister between 1949 and 1952. In 1957, he was sentenced to two years for embezzlement.

Rudi Kappel Surinamese aviator and business owner

Ronald "Rudi" Elwin Kappel was a Surinamese pilot. He was one of the founders of Luchtvaartbedrijf Kappel-Van Eyck which is now called Surinam Airways, the first airline in Suriname. He also helped construct the Zorg en Hoop Airport, and the Rudi Kappel Airstrip. Kappel died in an air crash near Paloemeu.
